Combo trials are always my favorite parts in fighting games. They help me get introduced into characters I may not have liked to play and gave me a sense of their playstyle. It’s also a great way to kill time

I'm currently running through the Xrd combos and none of them have been too hard, finished ram, johnny, I-no, elphelt, Sin, venom and raven and for the most part they haven't been too hard... until I started pot trials, pot trial 10 eludes me, I just wanted to treat my local pot player and I find out the hard way good pot players have hands. GGs pot players Edit: I finished the trial, never again

Persona has probably my favorite implementation of the combo trials, specifically the last trials, for most characters the 25th trial is just "do X000 damage" which is also good because it makes players find their own combos, but I especially like the wacky trials like Teddie's "combo 3 Nihil Hands" and Shadow Yosuke's "combo 15 Tentarafoos"

The final trials in Blazblue Chronophantasma are similar, with each character having their own unique requirements, like Ragna's "do a combo that will heal you for 5k", Jin's "do a combo that lasts over 20 seconds, Hazama's "use every Drive attack in a single combo" or Hakumen's "do a ToD".

One downside of combo trials is that they might mislead new players about what kind of combos are expected of them. I have seen newer players get discouraged and quit after not being able to do some fairly early combo trials. Even tho perfectly serviceable combos for them would have been easier to do and more damage
@mariocraft3067
@mariocraft3067 Жыл бұрын
I believe you are making a misunderstanding about the harder combo trials. Combo trials aren’t necessarily made to be useful, they are mainly for the challenge, and the satisfaction of improving your execution, while giving you some ideas along the way. That’s why they are called trials in the first place.
@lbesavant
@lbesavant Жыл бұрын
I think something else we need to consider is the thought of damage vs positioning. A combo that does only about 80-90% of the optimal one may be less damaging, but if it had more corner carry or a better oki situation, it may be more useful and applicable in a wider stretch of cases.

As a new Strive Player, Im glad the tutorial and missions are dated for the character I choose to play (Sol), but the Recommended Combos no longer work. So Combo Trials also have the risk of not being updated propperly. In Sol's case at least state his recommended are from Version 1.07. Updating the recommended combos or combo trials with current version would help; I literally had no idea why I was faily all those on the lab to build muscle memory; until I found out the current version and patch notes online for Season2.
@andrew9k424
@andrew9k424 Жыл бұрын
Street Fighter 5 sort of got around this by adding in new trials after each major balance patch to show the new stuff the characters could do, and also doing trials from older patches will specifically give you that patch's version of the character, which has it's own issues (not only are the combos outdated but you're learning them with an outdated version of the character) but at least it ensures they'll always be possible to complete regardless of what changes
@Masuo15
@Masuo15 Жыл бұрын
@@andrew9k424 I get it man, I just think having propperly updated Combo Trials (the first thing people will try out), makes the learning curve easier, rather than having to re-wire the muscle memory and solve the puzzle of "why this combo aint working?". If Strive did not have a text on the top saying Ver1.07 I would had never guessed why it worked on trial, but not on the lab/match. I can understand playing previous versions of the characters can be more fun for those who love to just do trials; but like stated in the video, new players want/need at least something bare basic that works to start with. I spend like 3-5 hours in missions, training and a bit of labbing, before even getting into my placement matches.

One of my favorite knowledge check in a combo trial is in Street Fighter ex2 pullum just after it teaches you some specials and simple normal into special then it hits you with "jumping heavy punch, jumping heavy punch" it isn't overly hard but most ppl I have seen do this either forget that she has a air special that gives her a second jump and those that do remember tend to think that it wont work after a few trys. I have always found it interesting to see how this combo come with so little info at the wrong time in the trials

One example of a hard combo that was also a knowledge check for me was Venom's 06 Advanced combo from Xrd. You need to do dash, St.K, St.S, Carcass Raid S, sweep, Double Head Morbid. I could NOT for the life of me get the Carcass Raid down up charge in any way until I looked carefully at the sample combo and the button notations. I noticed that it was doing K and S practically milliseconds away from each other, so basically abusing the buffer window to get more time to charge up the special. On one hand it's annoying that there was no explanation for this combo trial here or anywhere else online that I could find, on the other it's really fun to have to use your head and discover these little things.

I like combo trials as a way to get a feel for generally what its like to use a new character, I was intersted in trying base goku in fighterz, did the trials and detested kaioken so much I never wanted to play him again. I do like strive's combo maker mode, but no dev combo trials or ways to sort by difficulty may mean a new player stumbles onto something way harder than they should need to know. (The first combo I found in strive was a midscreen red rc link for bridget and that was kinda overwhelming as someone who's only prior fg knowledge was fighterz basic bnbs)

4:35 While the point here is good, a quick correction, A21 can get a soft knock down by not doing the follow up after the steal grab. It’s just generally still worse than most of the cast because she’ll typically do it so high in the air that the oki isn’t as good.

Combo missions are fun and essential. One of my favorite things to do is watch tournament footage of my character and then piece together the combos I see with the knowledge of their moveset to learn new stuff. It was fun to do until I hit a wall with UMVC3 Dante. UMVC3 doesn't teach you about Dante bold cancelling and watching match footage doesn't teach you either because their isn't any visual cue of Dante using bold move. That's why its important for a game to teach players what a character is uniquely capable of. We got guides and videos from awesome community members, but the information should be presented in the game as long as it's possible to do so. I'm glad NEEDING to go outside of the game or footage for info is mostly a thing of the past.

This is a subject that I don't think has been given enough discussion. I'm personally of the mind that a good combo trial should give the player an idea of what the character can do or show of unique quirks about their attacks or mechanics. I don't think they need to teach 'optimal' combos, because that might have the effect of teaching newer players to try that combo ad nauseam, even if it's not the best thing to do in that situation. As an example of this, I remember seeing a combo trial in the newest KOF game (haven't played it myself) which included a ToD for one character. As a casual viewer, it baffled me why I would bother learning anything else with that character if I could just do that. I'm sure if I knew more about KOF then I might understand the nuances of the game better , but that would be my first impression if I had cleared that trial.

Combo trials are a suggestion, Very rarely do I do combos from trials without deviation. Some are good, some are bad, and some are so specific that its not even worth doing ( unless it looks cool then I'm wasting my time doing it). Hit the lab, and use some imagination to tweak the recipe and then you get to the real sauce.

sure combo trials are cool and all but why don't fighting games have similar modes for pressure and mixups and stuff, it would help less experienced players figure out what they're actually supposed to be doing better than combo trials

I have no clue about playing fighting games. Because of THIIIIIIIIIIS. Everything is about making some massive combo to make monkey brain activate and make happy brain juice, but what would REALLY help is HOW TO OPEN THE FUCKING GUY UP FOR THEM. Teach me how to open a guy up in the corner, how to knock them down, how to meaty or okizeme or set up. No, I don't care how to do an air combo to make me look good to practice all day just to do it once. I need to actually learn about fighting game concepts. I need to learn how to PLAY THE FUCKING GAME AGAINST SOMEONE AND NOT A TRAINING DUMMY.

Unist and Type Lumina have in depth tutorials that teach theory, and even before that VF4 had some great tutorial content, but an actual trial mode isn't a feasible solution for a most games. Pressure and mixups can vary wildly from matchup to matchup, in some cases your character might be better off running away or building meter after a knockdown. And pressure depends on your opponents specific tendencies. Learning a dozen frame trap setups isn't going to help you if your opponent always reversals. As counterintuitive as it sounds I feel like this kind of mode would do more harm than good. It would be like a trial mode for RPS. Conditioning new players to use specific options is only going hurt them in the long run.
@fatyoshi696
@fatyoshi696 Жыл бұрын
@@hijster479 I completely disagree with this. Just like there are BnB combos that work on everyone, there are also BnB pressure strings that work in every matchup, and I think teaching beginner players the basics of how to open people up would be a huge game-changer. Just teaching them to use their overheads and grabs, to frametrap if they think their opponent will mash, to end their pressure on safe-on-block moves and to watch out for DPs, in a fun hands-on way like what combo trials do, would do wonders for the learning process. Besides, as someone who was a complete beginner not long ago, I actually find that the lack of pressure tutorials conditions players to use far worse options than if they did exist, I used to do nothing but spam my unsafe optimal combo starter and then have no idea what to do if it got blocked, which I would never have done if the game taught me pressure properly. Of course this isn't a solution that would work for every game, but I think that more rushdown-oriented games like guilty gear, where pressure is super important, would benefit from them enormously and would make the games much more approachable.

Combo trials are somewhat ok. I play enough to get a few basic ideas down and then run to the nearest YT tutorial or match footage to grab one from there. Combo trails can be good but tend to be flooded with filler combos that are both too hard for a new player and non-optimal for advanced players. Best example of this I can think of are BBCF trails. I can remember maybe only one or two that I thought were practical out of the dozens in that game.

Well, I don't like combos. As an idea, as direction of nearly all fighting games now and apparently, forever. As a variety gamer, I just don't like the idea of "this guy has 200 hours more than me in this game, that means he'll be killing me in 2-3 combos, while I'll be doing the same in 5-7". That's all. And it's specific for every game and every character. I can't hold everything in my head at once. (Idk, I probably could, if I didn't play games of nearly all genres each week) It's like, the same for mmos. There's sooo many cool ones, but - 'Oh, you got to grind to 80 first to try our main dish of raids! Levelling dungeons are cool, but let's be real, they are not raids, right?' An Awesome quest for awesomeness says. And there's Great plains of battle skulls, who's also dope, and says the same thing. And Mighty warriors of the stars, and Legendary guardians of justice two. And well, you get the idea. I just love that simple games where you aren't always chasing the stars and challenging yourself constantly are still around. And every genre has them. Singleplayer or multiplayer.

And since I'm in a rambling mood. A bit of a shower thought: There's Mokujin, right? Imagine squishing every single character in every fighting game into his wooden head. You'd still recognize any number of particular characters by - their movement, by their neutrals, specials. Then you can do combos off of that. But - there's only so many ways to do pressure in a corner. Fairly, that is. Where I'm heading? Potemkin is different from Zangief, from Beowulf, idk. Even if they occupy the same space in their respective games. Shoto's are still their distinct selves. Possibilities are endless. And combo, If you strip it down to the core - it's more or less a big damage and an execution. (with variety of options to do) There's still, a finite number of potential combos.
@StunEdgeD

I'm also a variety gamer too but, I have simply built up muscle memory for combos and, as for characters from different games they can simply share a similar gameplan. It's even possible to win on fundamentals especially Tekken where I've seen a number of times good players can lose to good movement. Just my thoughts as someone that's not good fighting games yet and is still growing. Though as per usual I'm totally wrong about trying to understand...
