I am a fan of his work. For me it’s always hit and miss with his work. I feel the same way about Julian Schnabel love some work but think some fail. In a side note, . I wish you would go to the Venice Biennale I would have enjoyed your commentary on the shows.

Thanks for watching and interesting thoughts on Oehlen. I would love to get to Venice this year - the early bits I have seen online and in the press look intriguing. Have you been to this one? It might be a stretch for me because I only try to travel by train to mainland Europe (climate change) and it takes a long time to get there but will see in August - a small chance!

interesting use of grid. is this a new direction/element for this artis; is some of this collaged? working on a collaged abstract grid can be quite challenging when one questions whether to break the bounds of some 'golden mean' of cohesion beyond which things start to jar

These works were all oil but the grid certainly threw up that issue of cohesion you mention and that was more obvious in some than others.

Where’s the best place to look to see what exhibitions are going on in London? Or is it a case of just keeping an eye on each individual gallery’s website?

I use this good listing site - Galleries Now. It contains a vast range of London listings and I find it invaluable because so much is going on. There is so much to see and this covers a lot. www.galleriesnow.net/exhibitions/london/

Is the work at 4:50 thickly painted? Did he depart from the transparent wash in that one. The brush work within the grid units is something to think about. I just saw the last works by Chuck Close a month ago as well as a large Jennifer Bartlett from the mid 80’s. We painters have been banging our heads against this particular wall (or turning away from it for 100 years)
