@1:38 I caught my own mistake only after publishing the video! Who else can spot a dangling participle? (Focus on the second example.) Well, mistakes are opportunities. If you can learn from this, then the mistake actually has value. 😀

Hint: Think about the subject in the main sentence, and then you can see if "knowing" refers to that subject or something/someone else.

Super lesson. We see here how irregular verbs are used as phrasal verbs: go, went, gone, goes) We need to go out of our way to help. We went out of our way to help We have gone out of our way to help.(in the present perfect tense, we use the past participle and not the past tense, which is 'went') She goes out of her way to help.

Thank you for connecting a bit more grammar to the lesson! 😃 I pinned a comment just now. Let's see if you can spot a weakness in one of my examples. Oops! Didn't catch in time to fix it. It's a chance to teach learners what a dangling participle/modifier is.

Following your words, at the school's test, should I use AW, without contraction?. It's funny because teachers tell me over and over again please doing exercise with contraction.
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 3 жыл бұрын
Contractions aren't right or wrong. It's a matter of what is more appropriate. For more formal English, use full forms. For more informal situations (writing or speaking), use contractions.

In this type of present participle, the phrase "Not" before the event and the last sentence without "not" do specify reason or time.? Not knowing how to earn his daily bread, he sat alone and completed working hard. Not understanding what the teacher said, Maria asked some silly questions. Hearing his footsteps near the door , the girl shut the door before he entered.k
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer Жыл бұрын
Context would make it clear: Not knowing how to earn his daily bread, he sat alone in confusion. >> Because he didn't know how to earn his daily bread, he sat alone in confusion. Not understanding what the teacher said, Maria asked some silly questions. >> Because Maria didn't understand what the teacher said, she asked some silly questions. Hearing his footsteps near the door , the girl shut it before he could enter. >> (likely time) When the girl heard his footsteps near the door, she shut it before he could enter.

@Englishwithjennifer 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are now three playlists. The first is a 20-day challenge. You'll learn 20 phrasal verbs in 20 days (or less). The second can take about 10 days. Each day you learn two verbs, and there's still review. The new phrasal verb will take me time to build, so this gives you time to watch the other playlists. :) All the playlists emphasize what you need to study for your exam, regardless of which verbs your teacher has assigned for you to learn: (1) What does the phrasal verb mean? (2) Is it transitive? (3) If it's transitive, is it separable? (4) What are some common situations/contexts in which we use the phrasal verb. Pay attention to the examples. Good luck!
