Ever wondered what's involved in setting up a travelling fair? When we filmed this back in the 1980's , it was quite an eye opener just how hard the rides and stall holders worked to get the show on the road. In making this film it was a pleasure to meet many very nice people who make a travelling fair like this work.
It would be nice to hear if you recognise anyone at this fair in Blaby, Leicester 1980, It was shot on 16mm film.
Filmed on 16mm film. Commentary - John Coles

I remember the travelling fair that used to come to our town when I was a kid. I had a brilliant view of the speedway ride from my bedroom window

This takes me back to when I was a late teen in the early 80s, ran away with a carnival from the suburbs of Philadelphia and ended up in Kissimmee Florida and than Venezuela for 4 months. I operated the sky diver first, than moved on to the Himalaya. The things I witnessed!

Lovely collection of rides, love this video, a Bennett Twist (the Cyclone), Supercar track and dodgems, Jackson Waltzer, Hayes Fabrications Octopus (the Monster), Hrubetz upright Paratrooper and I think a Cadoxton Roundup. The kids Austin cars ride is made by Hayes Fabrications, love the old Gardner generators too

As a former TV news film editor/script writer (1959-60) and longtime video producer, I want to commend you for documenting the hard-scrabble life of carnival people in 1980. The interviews add a lot to the film. In spite of the advent of computers and LCDs, today's carnival rides and attractions still require a lot of hard work, and commitment. Thanks for sharing.

Great Day's I worked on the fair as a kid when it come to town.i went as far as the Midlands on it.but usually helped out on it when it come round the liverpool /St Helens / widnes area.but the summer holidays was the best. .I have helped build up and pull down all these rides..I bet I could still build the old speedway and Walter up now 48 year's later.😊👍 great day's

Brilliant I loved Barkers fun fair, they used to come to the Campion hills in Leamington spa. My Nan lives in Lillington , so I used to visit her and go to the fair.

Every single truck on the film = made in England. ERF, Foden, Atkinson, Beford, Scammell etc. mostly powered by Gardner engines. How times have changed.

Shame we don't see them all that much nowadays. During the 80s we had the fairgrounds on a regular basis in hucknall nottingham. Twice a year on the Albert Street rec, twice a year on washdyke Lane and on ruffs drive and once a year on hucknall bypass Bulwell

Jesus, how most of the rides are made out of wood (you don´t find that any more). How simplistic they were, no computer manual operated just up the voltage. You don´t find those generators any more! Those bulbs must have used quite a bit of electricity not like today´s LCD´s. & the best to last. The size of a 110v generator to today´s!!!!!!

Wow a very old Round Up ride. It seems as though the older the ride the harder it was to assemble. Also they used a lot of wood back then so the older the ride the more maintenance it needed to keep running because over time that wood would rot. That's why today's rides use steel and fiberglass because they will last a lifetime. But it's really cool to see really old rides. I wonder if there is still a 1970's or 80's Round Up still in service?

Metal can corrode if you don´t look after it!!!!!! They still need to be painted but not the hard work of sanding the whole thing!!!! There are a number of reasons rides are made of metalics these days, 1) it´s a lot lighter. 2) Less vechicles. I just find it amazing that these rides didn´t sink into the ground. There are round ups still in service but the one I saw never went 90 degrees

It’s kind of a sad a bit because even with some disco music the fair seemed still a bit traditional perhaps but then as they’ve turned really modern now it’s got rid of some of the traditional steam fair feelings from times before So I think my fairs from past would be the steam ones for number one and for number two the 80’s sort of disco type.
