What Netflix did to The Witcher by firing Henry Cavill who was the most passionate person on set and mucking up the lore was horrific. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich the show runner is another example of what a German can do to anything Polish.....

Andrew mentioned about spinoffs and paying fewer actors as a result. I'm thinking that's what happened to The Witcher around Season 3. The plot was not about the Witcher anymore. They kinda wanted to get away with a spinoff withing a show those Bastardos. :D

Henry Cavill didn't get fired, he quit the show. He was a gatekeeper on set and didn't care about adaptation. All he cared about was recreating the Witcher 3. He read the books after getting the part and got even more gatekeepy and insufferable, saying that Geralt needed to have internal monologues because the books are from his perspective. Completely missed what made his performance so good in the first season.

Its seems a lot of people on here think million dollar actors who live in Los Angeles are the ones who are striking and make up a majority of SAG. They dont. They are in the top 0.1% of all actors in the US. There are over 160k actors who are part of SAG across the US. These actors arent just in California. They are also in Texas, Kansas, Georgia, North Carolina and all over doing a lot of extras work as they try to break in the industry to hopefully shifting to Los Angeles or New York or Atlanta. A lot of them do jobs like service industry work, real estate, and sales job

The only reason the actors could demand such high fees is because the studios were making so much more money off that. They would sell the season to ever other country around the world. Syndicated around the world. But if streaming is in every country. Those shows are still being sold to networks around the world. So the studios are still making money off these series and âpre probably writing off tax against any country where their streaming service is airing the episodes.

Certain shows, like British bake off, aren’t produced by Netflix. They just pay for streaming rights which means it’s available in more countries and hopefully draws in more subs. But Netflix doesn’t negotiate any of the talent contracts. Netflix produced shows usually have a one season with a 2nd option year to be enacted by Netflix. If the show is popular they do a second season. But by 3rd they have to renegotiate which is why many shows are never renewed.

How many times in the history of cinema do you hear about a role that 15 top actors turned down and then it ends up being a great role for the 16th top actor. Yea, you can say no one would see the movie without Tom Hanks but if it wasn't Tom Hanks then it would just be another beloved actor. This isn't the 1980's, there are so many "top" tier actors. It all boils down to greed anyways. Anyway you cut it. Studios, streaming platforms, actors, writers, etc etc. Imagine having 100 Large Pizzas and not sharing, like naw I'm going to need all 100 of these pizzas. Same thing with the ridiculous contracts athletes are getting. Literally benchwarmers making more in ONE year than a fire fighter or EMT will make in 40 years of waking up every day saving lives. There's a bigger issue at hand here...

Netflix has been profitable (yes, profit, not revenue) since 2003, in 2022 they turned over 4.5 billion dollars in profit. These streaming services are profitable and even if some aren’t, giving writers a percentage of ownership/equity is the same as a share in a company, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll get a return, but if you’ve put in blood, sweat and tears, at least you have some chance where that asset might make a return in the future and you’ll see some of that cash.

Basically its because the streamers won't release the actual viewing data so therefore you can't calculate just what the money numbers should be. Scary thing is that maybe the reason they don't release numbers is because the viewership for the recent stuff is not that big and that people are watching old shows.

Video games: Has AI Music: Has AI Social Media: Has AI Sorry but in a world of rapid technological advancement, "writing" is one of the most expendable and replaceable jobs imaginable. I have absolutely no idea why this industry in particular thinks they are so special in that regard. I'm no fan of this trend at all...but it's absolutely absurd to think Hollywood should be immune from it all. It will absolutely be one of the first industries to go. When the industry does well they want to share a piece of the pie... When the industry is utterly failing they don't want to share a piece of that pie... Funny how that works.

I believe you're still thinking about monetizing views. Since Netflix is a subscription service, you may have 1 person who signed up to just watch that ONE show and another person who watches 10+ hours a day. If you did a view-based compensation package, the value of one view to another can be dramatic.

Uber is actually astronomically profitable in reality. Now, what they report is BS, of course, but that's how they avoid taxes. In reality it's extremely profitable. Think about it - they mostly sell their app tech, it doesn't cost much.

Something that always ticks me off is folks complaining about not getting their "fair share" of the super rare mega hit. You got paid. If it sucked or was great you took the deal to get paid up front. Until you are willing to risk not getting paid at all, which still not as much of a risk as the one the studios take, in hopes of stricking rich I do not want to hear people complaining they should get more. You want more you gotta put skin in the game. You are the greedy ones for getting paid, taking no risks and demanding more on the risks that payed off. Get out of here.

This strike will change the industry.... no one will be under long term contracts. They'll take bids instead of offering contracts. Season (which we've seen already) will be shorter... 2 to 3 seasons. And if the show runs longer, it'll be a smaller cast. Movies and shows will be product placement heavy. Networks will make it so u can by a season for the year and it'd be more profitable... example: 9 season of seinfeld? $9 a year JUST for the one show... now imagine friends plus frasier plus the office.

Complex contract demands of 2 unions: writers & actors... Issues: residual pay, downsizing or removal of "writer's room" (where more of the creative fundamentals to STORY are developed), use of A .I. to generate a base of a story (which is generated from existing story), base pay, to scratch the surface...

it's only 12% SAG-AFTRA members make enough to get their health insurance. I am one of the people who was able to make a living doing just under five's, background work, stand in, picture car, etc in tv/film. The pandemic fucked that up a bit. And now the future looks even more grim.

I think their argument is that it's not a big issue because that's the crazy extreme item that the producers will agree to remove in their negotiations. "Ok. We agree not to use AI. In exchange, the actors/writers will agree to get paid less." You go in asking for a high number, knowing they'll never accept it and you negotiate down.

If a Streaming Service licenses a Film for say 250k for 6 months. 2% already goes to SAG. It’s the original content they screw us on. If Netflix or Amazon make an original film or tv show. They don’t share in the revenue. For films I’ve received thousands in residuals on and I’ve gotten Pennie’s in residuals for an Amazon Show when it should be thousands.
