I have enjoyed many of Ben's books in the past and love the "We Will Rock You" musical he wrote, but I completely disagree with most of his political opinions.

Ben Elton only thinks that referendums are anti democratic because the one held in 2016 didn’t go the way he hoped it would, and when he says that he wouldn’t respect a remain vote either, he is lying of course he would. Elton is wrong to say that referendums are just snap poles, most people I know and speak to, have very well reasoned and thought through opinions on political matters. Does he really think that MPs understand complicated issues better than the rest of us and that they then discuss and consider them at length, before coming up with sensible solutions, that’s a laugh, if they did our country wouldn’t be in the mess it’s in. Representative democracy, by definition cannot be more democratic than direct democracy. The reason we have representative democracy is because the ruling class don’t want the people interfering, time and time again opinion polls show that the general populace are far more sensible than our ruling class, and his assertion that Germany have banned referendums, because they caused them to go to war is beyond contempt. Funny though, I can’t remember voting in a referendum to go to war with Afghanistan or Iraq, what a load of crap, Elton will be telling us next that the German electorate voted in a referendum to have the Jews exterminated. Are there no depths that he will not sink to in order to discredit our referendum result. It is a real shame but Ben Elton is a democracy denier, he is desperate to stop brexit, what a knob.

Sorry Ben. You spent most of the last 20 years living in Australia, so you have probably not seen how the U.K. has changed since then. Seems that he is putting out the old “people were too thick to understand all the consequences”, etc. The irony being that the working class are probably the ones that have been most effected by the EU, rather someone who has Ben Elton’s lifestyle - so they know more about it than he does. I am Labour voter. The Conservative Party, UKIP, DUP and Green Party all in their 2015 manifesto had an unambiguous commitment to a referendum on UK membership of EU. In 2015 GE these parties got over 50% of the vote combined and over 50% of the seats combined. Not having a referendum would have been undemocratic. And despite what Ben Elton says you do have to respect the result, regardless of whoever won.

Sorry, I forget the presenter's name (Matthew Wright?) but he does seem to have a history of being a wee bit obsessed with transgender women and girls. For his information, transgender females are not born males but incorrectly assigned male at birth. We are born this way and we do not 'choose' to be transgender anymore than someone chooses to be gay or straight. Both Matthew and Ben seem to have been a little bit influenced by those transphobes masquerading as feminists who wrongly claim that trans women and girls are a threat to other women in female spaces. In fact, it is cisgender males who overwhelmingly pose the greatest threat and commit most of the violence against women and girls (including trans women and girls) and I find this tendency lately to try and shift the blame onto an already marginalised minority group of females (i.e. trans girls and women) at elevated risk of assault to be profoundly disturbing. Far from being 'radical' feminism, this actually derails feminism because it falls into the old trap of scapegoating other females instead of addressing cis male violence and discrimination against females. Moreover, statistics show that trans people are way more likely to be attacked by cis people than the other way round. I challenge both Matthew and Ben to produce evidence to the contrary.
