I love all of your reactions and this one gave me some smiles today as well as some sadness from the heartbreak in the song. Music has a way of digging up old memories. I was introduced to ABBA as a pre-teen in the mid 80’s. My good friend was from Sweden, and her parents were ABBA fans. I remember sitting on the floor in front of the book shelf as the record player cranked out the tunes from the Super Trouper album (that was our favorite one at the time). They also had the Chess album (music by Benny and Bjorn). We would lay there listening and following along with the rather long book of lyrics. I can remember being intrigued by the whole story. Later on I had the ABBA gold album on CD as well as the Chess album on cassette. I still remember being sad when it was ruined in a hot car one day.

"The winner takes it all" (1980) is their most saddest song, it's a heartbroken song, although at the same time it is a beauty of music and song, with a raw but excellent lyrics, it's a Masterpiece the blonde singer Agnetha has said in other interviews that She likes to sing melancholic or sad songs, because She can act and interpret the feeling of the lyrics. that's what She does here, in this song; the lyrics are not about the reality of Her marriage and divorce with guitarist Björn (although it can include part), She acts interprets and sings, it is Flawless Unmatched and Unforgettable Agnetha and Björn separate at the end of 1978 with two small children; the legal divorce occurs in the middle of 1980, a year and a half later; and that's when Björn writes the lyrics, on a melody that the pianist Benny had already elaborated, and Björn himself makes a demo with his voice when They meet again in the recording studio, They offer the lyrics to Agnetha to do the main voice, and She put all the emotion in Her (in addition to her talent) and makes the best interpretation of Her in ABBA. "The winner takes it all" was voted the best ABBA song by British fans it is also the favorite song of both Agnetha and Björn and in my ABBA Top 5 For a next reaction my suggestion is "S.O.S." (1975) or "Fernando" (1976)

The best ballads come from the gut. (is it well translated?: las mejores baladas salen de las entrañas). I was in the middle of my music theory studies (a little girl) when I heard this song for the first time. Two things happened: somehow that melody made me feel uneasy (I didn't know a single word of English), and for that reason, my interest in understanding it began (something, a little ... then and with a dictionary, I started to to study English). I have remembered this song a few times (for some stupid reason, humans take comfort if someone suffers the same as we suffer) and none of them were pleasant. But it always comes back to balance. There are many songs in which the melody takes you to the "misfortune" that the lyrics tell. Right now, I think of "Through her eyes" by Dream Theater (you should listen to it ... it's devastating)
