The bullying that they had to endure wasn’t just random teenage bullying. I saw a lecture where Elizabeth Eckford talks about how local parents would have neighborhood meetings and tell their kids what to do to harass the nine so that they would drop out.

Mad respect to all my black sisters and brothers who came before me and stood up to racism in ways that I cannot fathom facing today. The insults, offenses and injuries to your bodies, minds, lives, and humanity is something I'll never know and it's all thanks to you. Thank you for exhibiting strength and resilience. Thank you for doing the work and allowing me to live in a better society...albeit, one that is still filled with racism, but far easier to navigate and experience within a black body. You are heroes. You saved future generations from indignity and brutality (things still experienced today, but in a far less pervasive manner). The country is still filled with racism, but I got to grow up never having to cross to the other side of the street for a white person, never having to bow my head at a white person, never having to use a separate entrance to a building, and never having to sit at the back of a bus, movie theatre or courthouse. THANK YOU.

I love this but there was a small mistake, there were actually supposed to be about 20 kids that were meant to go but protests ended up making all the kids except the nine quit, this just shows the bravery of these nine.

This wasn’t that long ago. Remember that all of these people are someone’s grandparents and great grandparents. The students, the cops, the protestors, the politicians. So the next time someone says racism is over or that we all need to love on, point them to someone in your family or their family. They likely have someone who participated in this, and refused to face their crimes.

I’m from Little Rock and my freshman year marked their 50th anniversary! I was so proud to be able to attend Central because of the nine courageous people 🙏🏽

I got to meet one of the Little Rock 9, Minnijean Brown. She told me she was so scared, and the torture didn't end when she was finally allowed into Central. Ms. Brown was expelled due to yelling at the girls who hit her with combination locks.

I love this but they left out Daisy Bates! If you see this comment, please google her. She WAS the reason those nine students ever got the chance to attend LR Central High. She was a civil rights activist in the 50s, the president of the Little Rock NAACP, and even ran a newspaper that exclusively covered the nationwide civil rights movement and highlighted the achievements of black Arkansans. When the desegregation of schools was stalled by bureaucratic racism, she led the fight against the system. And it took years. She planned it all, debating the school board, advising the students, and organizing the safest route to school and volunteers to accompany them. Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed, and Melba Pattillo Beals are all icons, and rightfully so, but please don’t let history forget about Daisy Bates. I know they didn’t mean to do her any injustice, but they missed an opportunity. We hear so few stories of black women fighting and changing the system that sometimes ignorant people get the impression that there are none, but in actuality, WOC leaders have existed, they do exist, and they will continue to even without getting the recognition they deserve. I remember reading a book about the Little Rock Nine by Melba (sorry I forgot her last name) on my school library. I forgot what it was titled but I'll try to find it when school does return! I remember seeing a picture of Elizabeth Eckerford walking through the angry white mob with her iconic stone-cold face and that gave me so much courage and it helped me learn that I should just walk through these people who discriminate me for being who I am and I respect her bravery so much.

True story. My mom told me while she lived in Virginia during the civil rights movement the school bus she was on had to be escorted by the National guard especially in a particular white neighborhood and grown ppl would called them names and throw rocks at the school boy.

My mom went to Central High, she was born and raised in Arkansas and I lived there for only a few years but luckily we went back every year to see our family and I remember the day she took me to see where she went to High School and I saw how beautiful and giant it was but was more intrigued by the memorial benches, garden, and statues put up of the Little Rock Nine (something I knew nothing about because my school in Texas only taught Texas History) so we sat there and she told me all about it and I was blown away and I think if by any chance you end up in Little Rock/ Arkansas in general take a stop by Central High. It’s huge and has so much life. I haven’t seen it in about 5 years but I do cherish that moment I had with my mom and everything that I learned while sitting where it all happened. Their bravery will never go unnoticed. Crazy that in 2021 it still feels like nothings changed... Sad we have to even ask ourselves “when will the hate end..?” and by “ourselves” I mean us white people.
