Comeng XPT - part 1

This is part 1 in a series dedicated to capturing the Commonwealth Engineering Express Passenger Train - the XPT.
Now in service for more than 40 years, this iconic train is seen arriving and departing from Sydney Terminal, as well from a number of inner suburban stations.
Turn your sound up to listen to the mighty Paxman VP185 12-cylinder diesels and other associated sounds from the train. Particular attention has been made to capture the audio in best quality possible for the full audio-visual experience.
This video is also dedicated to all the staff who have made and will make the running of this train service possible and an experience of a life time.

This is some excellent work mate! You've captured some great scenes. Really loved the 5 XPT sets at Central @ 15:40

Ah, many thanks mate - appreciated 👍🏻 And glad to hear you liked it. Seeing x5 of them together is rare, I’m told, so I was very luck 😀 And the sound was incredible as all the power cars in that shot (15:40) were running and it was a still morning, too. Plus, some power cars at the other end were also running. Again, an incredible sound!!!

Nice video. Thanks for the slow look over power car no. 2012 and coach no. XAM 2178 1:54, never seen this done before. Good to see refurbished power car no. 2019 - 10:04, 20:16, 24:46. I thought at first that it was the leading power car involved in the Wallan derailment but I understand that was no. 2018.

Thank you so much. Glad you like it, and in particular the slow look overs. Lot and lots of detail on this train - good to appreciate it all 😀 Yes, in fact power car 2019 was 2018. It was re-numbered during its rebuild after the tragic accident at Wallan. But, yes, there’s some tired-looking power cars (still, they doing very good after +41 years of constant service!) and it’s fantastic to see 2019 back in service and looking so sparkly clean (for now 😅).

@@Xpresstrainography Thanks! The other thought I had was the work done in refurbishment of the power car was down to the XPT needing to be in service for a further 3 years due to delays in the supply of the replacement CAF DEMUs. It looks so mint that it’s a shame a fleet refurb wasn’t decided upon instead of the new trains as far as I’m concerned. Oh well, at least we have another 3 years to enjoy the iconic XPT with its Sleeper accommodation and quiet engine less carriages. Well, the carriages were silent when new I guess but now need a refurb to fix the squeaky groaning suspension!

@@Xpresstrainography Sorry to bother you again but would you know who worked on the refurb of the power car? I was thinking may be ABB since they have made an additional batch of power cars years ago after Comeng were no more.

@@Martindyna All good mate - I’m really not sure to be honest, sorry. Good question though 👍🏻 Maybe in-house by their own maintenance and engineering crew? But, I’m just guessing.

Yes it was they renumbered her cause of the driver and artc worker died in the cab

Ah, thanks mate - I appreciate it, and glad you like it. Lots of great footage (and audio) it was hard to trim it down any further 👍🏻 I know, right!!! (09:39 - 10:30) That’s Summer Hill Station. It just the BEST. I think I held my breath the whole time during that clip - didn’t want to muck it up 😂

Make sure to check out @WillJamesRailways latest video about his journey on the XPT to Melbourne. I’m stoked to see he used some of my footage I shot as his train passed through Gunning Station (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbl6fMub0tHNaKc.html) 👍🏻🙏 Oh, scrub through to 3mins 55sec - it’s a terrific shot of the X on that elevated section… is that just to the north of Wagga Wagga? I have to film at that spot one day 👍🏻 Have you before?

Hey buddy, my dad was the internal design engineer on the XPT among great Comeng rail projects. I shake my head when I see the rusty / dirty external paintwork on the locos, only in this country. Understand dirty / greasy environment however wouldn’t you think the transport people would regularly wash the locos. Anyway always good memories of my dad when I see the XPT.

It’s weird to see the similarities between the XPT interiors and the original HST/MK3 interiors, such as the ladder-style fluorescent lighting and fibreglass mouldings.

@@nkt1it was built under license from British rail , cheaper to build it in Oz than the UK and ship it.. so it's the same train just built over there based on the same plans designed in the UK

@@TsoneMedia I suspect that it would have been cheaper to import it from the UK, rather than set up a production line for such a small fleet. However, politically, it would have been preferable to build it locally. Also, the XPT power cars were extensively modified for Australian conditions.

@@nkt1 doubt it , something that size you just send the plans and let them get on with it and take a designer's fee.. Be more like the factory had other commitments and it get on with their own order and maintenance, and Oz had capacity to produce and just said send the drawings ..

@@TsoneMedia BREL would have liked nothing better than to sell complete trains to overseas buyers. The Class 58, built at the same time as the HST, was designed specifically with that in mind, although it failed to attract any foreign buyers. The HST was designed specifically for the UK, and required a number of changes, including the width and height of the power cars, for use in Australia.
