In this video we're finally making our campervan bench seats! We wanted to build our bench seats with lots of storage space and comfy cushions as we're going to be sitting on them a lot!
We originally intended to have a wrap-around bench seat but decided instead to make two seats facing each other. We used a mix of firm foam for the base and slightly softer for the backs.
As always everything is a very custom fit! It took a long time, especially to make all of the cushions covers... but we did have a break in between to have fun at Camp Quirky :)

I totally relate to you when you said the worst thing about the projects is the thinking of it - my head is melting with my van conversion. Every problem is unique and different but channels like yours inspire the rest of us to persevere and stumble through, so thanks.

Haha yeah, we can relate! There is so much to digest and get your head around, and the fact that everything about it can be completely customised to your liking is both a blessing and a curse sometimes. Some days it really felt like two steps forward and one step back (or two back 🤣) but keep persevering, you'll get there! Good luck!

Thank you! They took a very long time, but we got there in the end! We wanted to get them all finished before we headed to Camp Quirky so after we'd made a couple and knew what we were doing we had a marathon 15 hour sewing and cushion making day to finish the rest... still didn't completely manage it in time 😅 Very happy with them though 😄

You guys are so good at this kinda stuff. Never cutting corners and a skilled approach to many things. I've often wondered what industries you both work in? Such an inspiring channel for many people. It'll be sad when it's all done, only because the updates will stop. Unless you have plans for the channel once that time comes lol.

Thank you! We like to take our time to get it right for us so hopefully it will last for many adventures to come 😊 And we're a software engineer and a nurse, though we're both taking a break for a while. We didn't have any experience in this kind of area, we just both like to tinker with things and give everything a go so very happy with what we've been able to build. ...And we still have a few more build videos to come! And we'll have some travel videos coming after that, if people enjoy them! 😁

Cheers! And no worries, we definitely wanted to include some of that as they took quite a while to make, more than we expected! We had intended to finish them all before we went to Camp Quirky and had a marathon 14 hour cushion making day to get them done... still only got one side completely finished 😀 Very happy with them though so it was worth all the hours put into it! 🙂

What a great job you did. I found the completion of my van build to be bittersweet. You spend so much time planning and thinking through problems, and then it ends. There will be tweaks that go on for years, but once the big stuff is done what you see is what you get. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching you both create something that didn’t exist until you decided to make it so. Legends.

@SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories Ай бұрын
Thank you very much 😊 Yeah there is so much thinking involved with everything, it gets quite tiring after a while doesn't it! Having two people definitely helps to share the work... and motivation! We made them ~46cm deep from the front to the slope of the backrest, without the cushions on. The backrest cushions use 5cm foam, but we made the bottom cushions slightly overhang the edge, so we end up with ~43cm of actual sitting cushion space, if that makes sense! We find them quite comfy, they're not as deep as in a house but space is so much a premium so it's the biggest we could go in the space we had. HTH!

@@SelfBuiltStories Thanks a lot for your reply and precious information. Have learn a lot from all your video, even if i am a builder , it help a lot. I admire your motivation working in the rain & cold without a inside garage to build it. Enjoy the spring and keep in touch !! ✌
@SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories Ай бұрын
@@fabianprioux1136 No problem 🙂 And yeah we found the spray gun works great for flat surfaces like the cupboard doors and where there's a lot to paint, like the kitchen cabinets. It does give a really nice smooth finish if done properly and with the right consistency of paint, which was a bit of a learning curve! When we had a lot of surfaces to paint like for all the kitchen cabinets it was great and saved us loads of time and got a much more smoother and more even finish than we would be able to have done with a brush. But we found that for smaller things it was just too much faff to set up the spray gun and clean it out afterwards, and for us was quite weather dependent as we had to do it outside too and it was usually raining or windy 😅. So for the smaller pieces or intricate areas where it was difficult to physically get the gun in, often a brush and roller was simpler and used less paint. Thanks, you too!

Cheers :) And a mixture depending on what it was. So we used Osmo oil for the ceiling and the bed frame, danish oil for the worktops, kitchen cupboard paint for all the kitchen cupboards (with mostly zinsser bullseye primer), dulux eggshell for all the other painted white bits, and varnish for pretty much everything else 👍

Hey guys, thanks 🙂 And sure, we made them ~46cm deep from the front to the slope of the backrest, without the cushions on. @SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories 7 ай бұрын
Thanks! And yeah sure, so we ended up with 44cm from the floor to the top of the frame, then 6cm foam. So with a bit of dacron padding on the cushions it's ~51cm from the floor to the top of the cushion. The depth is ~52cm from the bed supports to the front before putting on the angled pieces. With the angle it's ~46cm of usable sitting space. And the backrest comes up 42cm from the frame with 5cm foam for those ones. Think that's everything! 😄

C1 drivers lisence how did you make the max technical weight hyer
@SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories 2 күн бұрын
Once we had passed the C1 test the actual process to up-rate the van was more of an admin exercise. We used Dee at www.vanweightengineering.com/ who prepared all the forms that we sent off to the DVLA to get it changed 👍

@@CBontenbal It depends on the van, we were able to uprate ours without changes, although we beefed up the suspension as well for peace of mind. You have to talk to a company like Van Weight Engineering or SV Tech and see what they say 👍
