Thank you for acknowledging that corporate investor types were involved in the comic boom. I had never heard about fractional ownership of collectibles until probably 2021. Overall, I think you're right about consumer attitudes improving. Assets are settling into normal value ranges.

one thing i appreciate about your channel is your arent smug/pretentious. i know that is pretty basic but some of these other channels are just awful. this would seem like a random comment but i watch on my xbox on autoplay whiile i do other stuff and holy shit some of the comic youtubers remind me of that south park where the yuppies talk with their eyes closed and smell their own farts out of wine glasses. aside from that, i just got back into comics after years and have been amazed at how honest a lot of the sellers are. makes me have faith in humanity. cheers

I agree that the comics market will begin to steady with overall slight increases in 2024. Other collectable markets I watch are seeing the same, a little more movement and steady prices. Which is good, because if the market is somewhat predicable and healthy both buyers and sellers can be successful.

What is turning me off, is the insertion of writers with an agenda into comics I have read for years. Turning superman gay, swapping genders of historical super heroes, overt "in your face" agendas into stories...all of that turned me off of new books. I am not against these types stories and characters, just don't mess with the history of established characters I have read for years. To top it off, when those same writers react to the criticism, they blame the readers, not the poor writing/story choices.

The comic book market is bizarre. We have a pandemic and a giant (short-term) recession. And the market doubles. Now, the economy is expanded and prices have fallen dramatically with a lot of books down 50% or more from their peaks. No other investments work like this. So if we can't count on economic prosperity or lack of it to affect the market, then we have to figure out how the pop culture effect (which you talked about) will affect people's willingness to spend big. The giant unknowns: 1) What will Disney do in reaction to the work/anti-woke polarization? 2) Will WB survive long enough to fulfill James' Gunn's vision? Max actually turned a profit of a hundred million, but that is dwarfed by the almost 50 billion in debt that the company has on the books. 3) What effect will changing technology, especially AI + the Vision Pro, have on the long term investments? If AI can create images today of characters, then what happens when it can create video? what about 3-D video? My personal bet: Bronze Age and early Copper Age books in high grade (9.6 or better), because I don't think investors don't fully appreciate the lack of supply of these books in high grade. People don't remember, but most people collecting books in the 70s didn't use boards. It's not hard to keep unboarded books to a 9.0, but at least in my experience, nearly impossible to keep them to 9.4 or better without boards. My other personal longer term bet: space characters. There's a much larger demand for the Earth based characters, but longer term, 3-D headsets will become as commonplace in homes as smart phones and laptops. Characters like Silver Surfer, Nova, etc. will really shine when this happens. IMHO.

I bid on over $12,000 of books last week on Comiclink and lost every single one of them except an ASM 14 CGC 7.5. I was bidding VERY aggressively and still losing. I bid at least 30% over GoCollect's FMV on a Detective Comics 373 Pedigree and still lost. Same on an ASM 300 9.8, a Hulk 180 9.6. So the market seems to be popping a little bit based on my anecdotal experience lately.

Some bidders are straight stupid. The bids can sometimes go higher than other listings with buy it now options. Just watched a 9.0 of Eternals #1 hit $63 plus $18 shipping in a bid where another listing had a 9.0 for $65 with $7 shipping. So the bidder paid $9 more after shipping than they would have if they just did the buy it now one. I nabbed the buy it now one, but I offered $60 on it and they accepted. 😂

As a finance exec... Yield curve inversion for prior 18 months predicts recession (its 6 for 6 over last 35 years). They'll blame it on an "AI bubble" or some such nonsense to fit market action when stocks drop. I would have to imagine most bronze/silver age comics drop. Golden age and pre-code horror (along with real scarcity like Turtles 1st print) is a diff story.

@@ComicBookInvestmentsI think you're on the mark, especially with Gold and Silver. Not part of your business modeal, but the one area that I think is going to continue to decline (for lack of demand) is the very modern CGC slabs of non-key / variant covers and the spurious keys (i.e., they absurdly-expansive defined "Keys" from keycollector). I think that these are a drudge on the market... everyone who wants any of these comics has one, and there are hundreds for sale with no buyers, and they're going for below "Case cost" nowadays. I'm starting to see dealers blowing them out for 5 for $100, and that's still too much. But this decline has less to do with the demise of the comic boom and a natural and healthy reset, than it does with the fact that these books were never really worth the $89 (or whatever folks used to pay for them). This is an area of the comic market that I think will continue to correct. There are tens of thousands of CGC 9.8, $6 comics encased in $25 worth of plastic that people only want to pay $6 for.

I am quietly collecting and taking advantage of the CGC fiasco as well. I enjoy picking up CGC slabbed keys at raw price (Silver and Golden). I've mentioned this in another chat. I witnessed dealers do not do trades of CGC cased books because they don't have provenance of the case (paperwork you submitted and owned the book), and the persons trading stand their shock! They had to do the same. Sell into the discount. A great time to buy the books at discounted CGC prices.

Question: Do you assume every person that collects comics is a dealer/flipper/in it for the investment? The majority of comic book collectors are COLLECTORS. So we really really LOVE that comics are cheap these days. And I wish it stayed more affordable. I wont buy comics if they are overpriced. Maybe you should become an LCS and get a monthly delivery of the modern age comics and dive into maybe manga and other collectibles more: trading cards, magic cards, action figures then your business wont rely heavily on just selling used and vintage comics. Sell trade paperbacks, get a monthly delivery from diamond and penguin, yknow. WE COLLECTORS ACTUALLY WANT VINTAGE COMICS TO STAY CHEAPER.

I am 90% a collector and 10% a flipper to stay within the hobby, I sell the books I have no interest in to buy bigger books. For example, I collected a lot of Silver Age non-key high-grade books. I sold those to buy mid-grade Timely and DC Golden Age WW2 comics. Another example. I am starting to sell all my modern books I do not care about after reading. That money I will put back into the hobby to buy other books. I do NOT spend my 9-5 or savings on comics. I let my hobby fund itself so whatever happens. It is within the hobby without affecting my reality all that much. Comics are my escape hence why I said reality. FYI, If a book sells for $20-$25 on eBay or other stores. I put the book on my wall for $18 and 9 times out of 10 it sells.

Kind of off topic, but hoping Dave or the community can offer some advice. if you're selling a small comic book collection (under 2,000 comics) where the entire collection is raw, how would you quickly determine what the FMV for keys are? I am guessing most would say eBay, but if you look at what was sold, those prices can be in a wide range. I was thinking of using Key Collector Comics website's prices as a quick way to price what a key's FMV would be. Thanks in advance for your replies and suggestions.
