There was a different shapeshifter in early season of boys, homelander used shapeshifter for his funtime. That shapeshifter is same as others from movies, but this one has different powers and has to remove it's skin.

I think this season in it's tone and story progression is similar to that of Attack on Titan season 3 part 1. The slow pace, new character introductions, going deep into psychology of existing characters. Season 5 will be more fast paced just like AOT season 3 part 2 was.
