what makes the recent Bulova moon watch so special is the fact that it will be more accessible to the average person on an average pay packet and not a reserved luxury for those with deep pockets !

Very true. However, I've worn my Speedmaster since I was a high school senior and well into college at FIT (near the Cape, not the place in NYC) since 1969. I would not want to have to pay over $3,500 for a pre-owned watch like the Speedy today. But this beautiful Bulova can be had for about $400 including tax and it is way more accurate than my Speedmaster. I've sycn'd the Bulova to the international atomic standard, and after one month I can only detect about a one second difference. I can say that the Speedmaster has nowhere near that accuracy. However, the Speedy has a movement that was designed after the same movement as the Patek, (Lamonica movement?) so it's movement is superior to other competitive watches, IMO. But it can not compete, accurately, with the 262 MHz crystal of the Bulova, which is almost as good as an atomic watch, for accuracy. Besides, The Bulova can go down about 150 ft into water. Don't try that with your Speedmaster. For the price, the Bulova is a fantastic bargain. IMHO

Sam Zerafa Affordability has very little do do with a watch being special. I don't have deep pockets, and yet I have owned two Speedmasters, so what you are saying is completely ludicrous. While it can be argued that the current Speedmaster with the 1861 movement never went to the moon, it has indeed gone to space and still holds the NASA certification. In its current iteration, it is still being strapped to the wrists of Astronauts to this day and it is the one watch used during all EVA's. This beautiful Bulova watch has very little to do with the one who actually went to the moon, as that one wasn't even a production model, and the movement was completely different to the one that powers the current so called Bulova Moonwatch. Sorry to burst your bubbles, but this model of a watch hasn't even seen the inside of a space shuttle, or rocket.

What a lovely story. Thank you for posting this. I had wondered why Bulova were allowed to produce lunar watches, thinking that it might be like that NASA apparel arrangements, but if it actually made it to the moon as a privately owned watch, nobody can argue. I like it that the price of a Bulova tribute is reasonable unlike the Speedmaster which is stratospheric to a guy like me. Your enthusiasm and awe shone through like the awe I felt as a child watching the moon landings in England. I can look at the old footage now and strangely nothing seems to me to be dated, though it has to be. The watch is all round awesome though. Thank you again guys. Great video. Lovely story.

It sounded like he was going to speculate why the crystal is raised, but he never finished his thought. It's a weird feature and I'm curious what the thought process was that lead to that choice. I just got mine yesterday and it's a gorgeous piece. I love the history, and that it looks like an homage to the Omega but it's actually not, and it replaced an Omega on the moon. That's just a cool bit of watch history a lot of people don't know about.

Most people think the Omega (Oh May gah) Speedmaster was the only watch worn on the moon. It may have been the only watch approved by NASA, but I heard years ago that there was one other watch worn on the Moon. I could never remember the name. Now I know it was the Bulova. Funny, but I was given a Speedmaster in 1969 as a birthday gift just a few days after Buzz Aldrin wore his on the moon for the first time. But it was still considered a pre- moon watch because it was purchased before the first moon landing and it had the .861 movement, not the .321 that Buzz and Neil had. Neil Armstrong left his hanging on the instrument panel because the LEM's built in clock stopped working. So Buzz was the first person to wear a watch on the Moon, and it was the Speedmaster. Back then, my Speedmaster cost about $300 new. Today, I think the new ones go for about $3,500, depending on the model. Because the Bulova Moon watch is so beautiful, and in fact was the only other watch worn on the moon, I went out and ordered one with a black leather wrist band for $375. You can't beat the price, and it's water resistant. You can't even take the Speedy into the shower without doing potential damage to it. Don't get me wrong, I love and wear my Speedmaster every day. But now I have another watch to wear that is iconic and is a true "moon watch' as well. JMHO.

Apollo 15 Commander David Scott also took a Bulova stopwatch to time DOI - Descent Orbit Insertion 🧐 The A15 lunar EVA-2 hesalite pop-off from his NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster n° 42 chronograph was not documented in the A15 mission report, while Charlie Duke had the same "problem" during EVA-3 on Apollo 16, his "incident" was very well documented in the A16 mission report. Anyway, Scott wore the 44 mm Bulova 885104 prototype chronograph during A15 lunar EVA-3 until splash-down and post recovery events. It was auctioned as the only privately-owned wrist watch worn on the Moon in October 2015. #MoonwatchUniverse

It's got very nice aesthetics. Well designed chronograph. Bulova is a fantastic company. I am glad that they belong to Citizen now, which is another great company. Hamilton went to rather corrupt cartel-like Swatch Group. That can backfire at some point.

Guess I'll have to do a restoration on one, that way I know it's done right.

Cool watch and video, wonder how much Commander Scott made off this one mission since this was his last after the crew pulled some fiasco with trying to sell postage stamps they took to the moon? Flight control handle, this watch, and postage stamps.
@chrismcnie

because of that fiasco its clear he had finance in mind. I would bet money that he took this watch fully intending to use it on the moon and sell it at some point which is what he did. the fact that the failure of his speedy was not documented in the a15 mission report while Charlie Dukes was on the next mission also makes me doubt it truly "failed"

And the speedmaster had a case by Huguenin Freres and a movement by lemania. That was just how the watch industry worked back then. Even rolex used dials made by singer and cases and bracelets from different suppliers. The concept of “in house” is a relatively recent one as watches became more about luxury and exclusivity than pure function

YourBestFriend dude, please. How about growing up? We're talking one, one speedmaster which failed. Many things have gone wrong in space. Ever hear of Apollo 13? Bulova had been trying unsuccessfully hard to get their wrist watches in the space program for years, even trying to force their way into it not by the sheer prowess of their wristwatches but by claiming they were an American company and the law protected them. Since that didn't happen, they decided to make a "special" one which wasn't even a production model with a Universal chrono movement (A watch which holds very little in common with this so called "moonwatch) and gave it to Scott . Funny that of the other speedmasters there on that ocassion, his was the one that failed. Hmm... What a damn coincidence! That being said, Omega Speedmasters have proven reliable for over 50 years in and out of space, difusión, so what you are saying about their reliability based on that incident is really an ignorant and childish point, which anyone with basic knowledge and an unbiased mind, can easily refute. Dude, even the Seiko Pogue, which didn't make it to the moon either, has more pedigree and space cojones than this Bulova (which isn't even made by the same Bulova company, of yore.... it doesn't even have that going for it). This is a nice watch, for what it is, but its relationship with space is nothing but hype and can't even come close to that of the Fortis, Seiko Pogue, much less to that of the Speedy!
