Today we split 2/3rds of a cord of firewood and time it to see how fast the Eastonmade 12-22 and box wedge are.

Great video Adam! That’s a fine machine. I must say from an old guys point of view who’s been splitting wood longer than you’ve been breathing. I learn a lot from you young guys. Just setting things up and the work flow. Of course the eguip has changed a lot over the years and continues rapidly changing. I gotta give your generation a big thumbs up 👍🏻 all the way around!

Hometown Acres well most of my splitting years were different cause I used an axe.. well you have your logs to be split all lined up. Most of what I’m splitting is large rounds in a big pile. Too heavy to stack. , but the Wolfridge sure makes things easier than the old days.

Its amazing the amount of wood a real commercial splitter can do in a short amount of time. We just got a Wolferidge splitter yesterday and did a full cord in 1/2 the time it used to take us with a "home store" style splitter and it was so much easier. The Eastonmade sure looks good, went thru that pile of wood like it was nothing!
@HometownAcres4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Splitting is now the easiest part of the process. The cutting and stacking is where the real time suck is

As David Sams says in the comments you can save time by where you load the next block. Instead of loading the block into the empty loading area just drop it onto the top of the wedge as soon as there is room. It will save a second or 2 per block at least and if loading from the log lift side it will allow for easier access.

How is it splitting the forked or v pieces of wood with knots in it? I Know you probably won't run those thru the box wedge but does it handle them in a 4 way

That turned out great adam. I'm surprised it was almost the same speed as the other test in the smaller wood. The box wedge really shines when you get over 20"

Yeah but it was split a lot smaller and more uniform in size. Better finished product in my opinion. I had to split a lot of the ones from the 6 way wedge video again

Nice video. At 3:27, the ram returned without any wood. Your partner waits while you load the next piece. If you put the next piece on the box wedge as the ram is returning, you could save a little time.

New subscriber here. Question?? Is 🔥 wood your job or is it more like a second job. What is your primary source of income, cause you got alot of nice equipment, but would definitely get me a Stihl chainsaw, maybe even one of those fuel injected models in about a year, after they have passed the test of reviews. Hey Adam, thanks for sharing this! I'm a little confused on your math. At 1 cord/ hr wouldn't it take about 35hrs @ $300/cord to pay for the splitter? And do you really get $300? Up here in Canada it's $70/face cord...take me forever to pay for that machine!!
@OurGreeneAcres4 жыл бұрын
Ok Adam so the box wedge is amazing as always producing red oak splits as fast as you can feed it. I do have one concern though even with a helper I think you are working too hard. I mean you had to move the splitter 3 or 4 times I think it’s about time for the elevator/conveyor to show up. Just saying. Take care brother

I don't t see any of the other splitters in the challenge make the consistency in sized wood in that time frame. Joe's machine is the only one that came close. Everyone else was pumping out rather large peices which have their place in over night or day long burns. The knectics are really fast but suffer with larger peices. The box wedge is really easy on the operator for the most part. Gravity keeps doing its thing.

I unload my wood off the back of my truck and straight onto my log splitter, then stack it. Job done. You handle yours, multiple times. You need to be more “time efficient”.😊
@dukeflem4 жыл бұрын
I think I can answer for him on this. He was making a time trial for a specific part of a process. He made a stack that was the same size as the ones for the splitter wars. He started at this specific stage and timed it with a box wedge rather than a 4-way wedge which would have been faster so he could compare the two. He also could have easily done this by himself almost as fast. He is very process oriented and works out each step of it. That's is what you are looking at.

My two teenage sons, with my regular $700 single wedge 22 ton splitter, can split and stack one cord of wood per hour. And it is not the small straight grained stuff you are working on in the video. Most of the time issues with wood are transporting related. Why would you get wood in a pickup, unload it and stack it, unstack it and split it and then have to deal with the piles of split wood yet again along with all the small frays that come off the wood when splitting? The amount of time wasted here is very high. If time mattered more, you would get much more efficient.
@HometownAcres4 жыл бұрын
I don’t normally stack my logs but I knew I wouldn’t be getting to these ones for a few months so I wanted to keep them up off the ground and let them start to dry out a bit until I could get to them

Do you use tree branches for firewood? Tree branches are light-weight and easy to cut with a chainsaw or better, a chop saw ( search for tree branches for firewood). Have a good day.
@finnnilssen86474 жыл бұрын
Also the density of the wood in the branches are usually higher, so you get more efficiency out of the branch wood. 😊
@fil44284 жыл бұрын
The only problem is that the branches produces lot of Ash.
