Hi Everyone and welcome to part three of our Commodore 64C refurbishment, maintenance and future-proofing series.
In this episode we're looking at a simple storage solution called the TapeCart SD which allows loading of single load .prg files from an easy to use browser directly on the C64.
We'll be going through the setup of the TapeCart, designing and printing a case for it and loading it with some software.
Finally, we'll do some diagnostics on the C64C and all being well, load up some games to test.
I hope you enjoy the video - please subscribe and we'll look forward to seeing you next time in the shack.

Great video; I'm becoming a real fan. Good that you mentioned Fusion 360. I think Autodesk should be lauded for making this professional software free to makers and amateur designers. Love the seamless editing!

I've always liked the C64 but never had an original, as I went from the ZX spectrum 48K purchased from Boots, to the Atari 800XL with floppy drive. Ah those were the days. I think the Atari was very under rated and pretty similar to the C64 with regards to game quality. Even though I have an 800 , 800XL and 65 XE I prefer using the C64 maxi that I purchased during 2019 and find game play and graphics hard to distinguish between the two. I always loved the Goonies game which plays pretty much the same on the C64 as on the Atari. When I use the Atari I use a lead I made and put it through a hdmi upscaler where as the C64 Maxi just plugs and plays. Like your vids, guess I'll have to sub!!!

Yeah i played Summer Games a lot on my fathers Commodore 128D, still have the original copy, and it still works after 36 years, but never have played the Bruce Lee game.

Wizball by Sensible Software is an all time great game, if you're still looking for C64 games. I have plenty of others(over 100 tapes downstairs, a lot of 'em are magazine cover tapes with demos and freeware games, but the vast majority is from the £1.99 section of Boots, maybe 10 or so big box ones), but it's been so long and I was so young, it's hard to make them come straight to mind.

I was given an SD2IEC but for real nostalgia, and no 'bad cracks' that refuse to work spoiling the mood when trying out games I think it's best to get a TAPuino which lets you load full tape images via the cassette port. I had forgotten how important a part of the experience the whole flashing bars, loading screen and loading music was. Never even knew a C64 owner with a disk drive in 1983-86 when I had one.

@@TheRetroShack I will check the vid out but for me personally the safest bet for me is a Tapuino as I don't like multiload games on disk or tape (the delay between gameplay ruins the atmosphere for me now). I did an homage to the C64 tape loading years of my youth "memories of a 1530 datasette" plus you get to hear some remixed SIDs from RKO website I frequented :)

On your case, use fillets rather than bevels as they print better. :-)

0:51 You mention that SD card tape drive emulator can load tape and cartridge files, but what about floppy disk games? This was a concern of mine with getting into an original hardware C64 as it had software on three formats; the tape drive, disk drive and cartridge slot. In your description, you mentioned that you have the C64 maxi. I know that machine is emulated, but the latency is low on it. From what I have seen, it is much easier to load programs into this version of the C64. What do you find is better? The C64 Maxi, or the original hardware?

Hi, Do the games have to be in .prg format on he SD Card or will it read them in a .zip format?

Hi Scott - the TapeCartSD only loads .PRG and .TCRT files - but it does them really fast :)

@@TheRetroShack Thanks, just looking at getting one (one my C64 arrives 😀) if it possible to convert d64 files into. prg? Seems quite a few games are are not available as a .prg

@@scottelkington7661 .d64 files are disk images that contain the programs. You can use a disk viewer/editor to extract the PRG files from D64 images. Here's one: www.d64editor.com/ Good luck and thanks for watching!

Hardware wise - it probably has all the right stuff, however it's the front-end browser.prg that is a C64 program. I'll take a look around and see if anyone's had a go :)
