My elk hunting buddy has become my best friend. We met when my dad took me on a guided hunt for a college grad present. We met because his dad was my guide. We were skunked but I got something even better: an invite back on public land. 6 years later we spend a week every September together and 51 weeks talking and thinking about it. He has taught me everything I know about the mountains.

I was freehanding the camera, and things happened extremely quickly, and the bull was working out to our left, and as it did, I kept getting more and more twisted. When he released, my body was facing the opposite direction with the camera lens facing back behind me. I wasn't going to turn my whole body around, have the bull make me out, and screw up this opportunity for Chris. Once he realeased, I swung my whole body around, trying to locate the bull with my eyes to get the camera back on him; that's why the less-than-ideal shot of the heavens happened. Not my best work, but you have to make a call as a camera operator during hunts sometimes- perfect shot with the camera and risk screwing up the hunt, or get an animal on the ground and not get the angle perfect.

@@GOHUNT why would you not want your quiver attached to your bow is my question? Wouldn’t keeping your quiver attached to the bow add weight that would quiet your bow down on the shot, allow you to easier get a second arrow for a follow up shot and make it easier and safer to carry through the thick bushes like in that first scene so you could see the arrows? Also iff you went in for a stalk without your pack you wouldn’t have something else to carry. Just wondering the practicality of this method.

Great question. The hip quiver mount is made by Total Peep and Chris and Trail use it attached to the belt on their pants. It then allows you to take your quiver (in this case they were using a Tight Spot quiver) and attach your quiver mount to the Total Peep. You can then swap back and forth on a hunt when using the Tight Spot, meaning you could have it on the hip or losen the quick release lever and place it on the bow.

Was telling my hunting buddies, way things are, we’ve probably got 2 maybe 3 NM hunts left. Looks like you guys were using mech heads. Sevr? Obviously it killed the elk but I’m wondering about the blood trail? Pass through? Shot distance? I bought some of those but haven’t had the guts to shoot ‘em at anything bigger than a javelina.

@trailkreitzer9163
@trailkreitzer9163 Жыл бұрын
Hi there, rationale..a quiver full of arrows on the side of the bow adds weight where I don't necessarily want it and is more finicky in the wind with all the added surface area. A hip quiver attachment works pretty well and I haven't had an issue with it being slower to load. The only real issues perhaps are making sure you rotate it up when you sit into a hillside so that you don't stick your nocks into the dirt. Beyond that, it's been my preference. Hope that helps some, all the best and good luck this fall!

Hello-Curious about your clothing. Do you feel it is not that critical to wear full camo for elk? I guess I have become brainwashed by the marketing hype that I need to be in full camo. Would enjoy to hear your thoughts on the subject. Thank you
@trailkreitzer9163
@trailkreitzer9163 Жыл бұрын
Hi there, in my opinion it may not be as important as it has been made out to be. In terms of an elks senses, I'd suggest that scent is number one, then sight, and then hearing. When I say sight, I think the most critical element is any type of movement. They seem to pick up on movement quickly regardless of what you are wearing. I think it's more critical to remain relatively motionless and move slowly when you can. When a bulls comes in to a call, he's looking for an elk and his drive to pass on his genes probably outweighs his sense of awareness at times. In saying that, is camo a bad idea? I would say no, I think it can help break up your outline. It's possible it could buy you a split second or a second look back. If I am hunting alone or I am out in front shooting, I almost always wear a camo top. Long of it, I would not say camo is critical for elk hunting..but it could help a little in some situations.

Do you guys not worry about bears getting to the meat with it hung low to the ground?
@trailkreitzer9163
@trailkreitzer9163 Жыл бұрын
Hi there, depends somewhat on the area. Grizzly country I would always try to get it higher up off the ground. Even when it's just black bears I would prefer to get it higher in the air but that's what we had and we wanted to just allow it to get some air flow across it. I can't recall seeing any bear sign, although I'm sure there are some in there. We packed it out the following day so we didn't leave it long. Overall, yes..I'd get it higher in the air if possible.

@@trailkreitzer9163 do you guys also hang your food up in a bear hang as well to prevent potential bears at camp? I live in BC and we are always doing bear hangs etc during earlier hunting seasons
@trailkreitzer9163
@trailkreitzer9163 Жыл бұрын
@@marcusv1934 Probably depends on the area and density of bears. If I'm in grizzly country I always hang my food, don't cook in camp, and try to be really mindful of what I have in my pack/tent. If I am hunting in black bear country, I typically don't worry about it too much. I'm also rarely camping in the same spot. When we are elk hunting we are primarily living off our back and moving day after day. Mostly I think it just depends on the situation and location. In your scenario I think I'd always be hanging my food and taking steps to avoid conflict.
