Welcome to the TCG-101 series - the best way to become a better duelist with lessons in under 10 minutes.
Do you often find yourself losing but not understanding why? Do your opponents seem like they always have it all and you never get lucky? Genius Invokation TCG looks simple on the surface, but is in fact quite a complicated game! There may be some pretty basic mistakes you're making that you're not even aware of, and won't until someone points it out!
So, in this lesson I'll take you through 5 of the most common mistakes I've seen from newer players. If any of these seem like something you are doing, then you might be able to dramatically increase your win rate just by following these simple tips!

Another tip that f's me up a lot. Pay attention to statuses. Especially for ones like Meropide where it doesn't have any big visual indicators. You really have to pay attention to EVERYTHING.

I think another thing that needs to be mentioned is knowing when to end your round. If your opponent has ramped up and has significantly more dice and opportunities to make plays than you, ending your round too early may give them full control for rest of that round, which may have undesired end results. Using your dice wisely to match your opponent's tempo allows you to play around them, whether it may be via distributing damage among your characters, or by waiting for them to make a mistake and create an opening for you. Likewise, ending your round late means your opponent determines the direction of the next round. Particularly relevant when your opponent ends first on a character with 1hp and burst ready, next round they'll be able to cast their burst. Also relevant with summon decks, especially decks that start with Mona (MEW is a good example), if they end first on Mona with the summon, it means they'll be able to do whatever they want with that hydro application next round. Summons guarantee an application at the end of the round for you or your opponent to make use of at the start of the next round, whoever starts first. There are also niche cases where you can use up round-duration effects (lotus, for example) by not playing into them and ending first. Especially in end game where both the opponent and your characters are at 1hp as an example scenario, whoever gets to make a play first next round wins. This is why ramping up is particularly powerful, you get to start first next round and also have many opportunities to make plays, so sometimes it might be worth using the 3 dice in your hand to prepare for the next round and end first, instead of using a skill and having to end last.

Definitely agree! This one though is hard to summarize as a tip, because when it is correct to do that largely depends on the game state. There's no 'general rule' for when you should and shouldn't. Probably why your explanation got long haha. Good points though

I’d like to add conceding too early before you’ve actually lost. Sometimes, you may have a chance to still win even if the odds look slim. Plus, your opponent could be bluffing, like they have bad dice and not enough cards to tune.

another mistake i see some players make is to always use a skill if dice is available. in a freeze deck, it may be worth it to not use dice to use skills if you can start first next round and freeze your opponent. this can deny them from at the very least 1-2 dice, and at most 8+ dice if you get a full freeze clear, which can be very worth sacrificing 3 dice for if you have nothing to use them on

Ah yes, managing auras is definitely an important thing to consider especially for a freeze deck! A bit of an advanced tactic for sure, but great point!

Autodice is definitely one of those finer skills that one probably doesn't think of that much but it can really mess up moments where you could have ramped, I do this a few times and realize I gave Liben two matching haha Good vid as usual!

Yep - I think one of the things that separate the good from great players is consistency, and always keeping in mind stuff like autodice goes a long way, particularly with how common Liben is played!

I learned this the hard way when playing Maguu Kenki and watching autotune waste away my precious cryo dice which can't even be tuned back while you're at Kenki cuz he's anemo. 🥲 Gave me a habit of double-checking every time

Thank you for including mistake #5. I've kind of learned this by feel just after playing for so long, and mentally referred to it as "broadcasting your plan to the opponent." As much as possible, you want your opponent to be uncertain of your next move. If they overthink, they might waste dice, cards, or initiative which slows down their own gameplan. However, there are also situations when you might want your opponent to believe surely that you will make a certain move... then surprise them with something else. When this happens, I see people call it being "jebaited" and it's one of the more fun things you can pull off against your opponent.

4:00 Adding onto this: also save your gamblers or any cards that may give you extra actions for as long as you can, sometimes opponent would do an action taking into account the amount of dice that you currently have instead of the amount you could have I've won many games by pulling out a woven with two dice left because opponent assumes I'm out of actions So yeah, you still have to take into account things like woven, gamblers, treasure, gilded, lyre song, etc when counting how many actions your opponent has left Thank you for this video! I'm stil learning a lot 😊

Yup, saving extra dice is kind of the reverse of not playing equipment early, so definitely a good point! Very important right now if you have things like Gilded. Opponents do have to play around it

Tips 4 and 5 are what separates a begginer from an intermediatte player. It makes a whole world of difference not showing your opponent if you'll keep attacking or ramping. One more tip: use the time you are given during your turn. I can't count how many times i rushed my turn just to realize later a better move i could've done =/

Definitely all things I’ve gotten better at over time, however I haven’t played tcg much recently, the experience of having what feels like a dozen different effects going on at once and losing to forgetting one of them has been frustrating and it really has killed my motivation to play

a mistake i see new players, and even pros make mistakes in is certain effects like fortress of meropide or kirara. its pretty annoying that tcg doesnt warn you with a "Are you sure?" pop-up when playing a 1-3 dice winning card with fortess of meropides effect active, but until then (if anything gets done about it) it may be worth the effort to check your current status effects/your opponents support + summon layout to make sure you dont make any costly mistakes

@@jeremiahsmith916 i dont think its a good thing to degrade it down to a "skill issue". new players, even pros get messed up by this, especially ones who get eager to play cards. (lets not forget that fortess of meropide can activate its effect and be removed from the support line, which can happen frequently) it also gives the opponent a pretty unfair advantage all things considered when it does happen, as you didnt mess up because you didnt think of the best decision, you messed up because of not being notified. I think the furina arcane legend card does a good job at showing that you've been debuffed and need to be careful, perhaps fortress of meropide could use a more flashy effect too.

I got some video idea I would like some Genshin TCG youtube do. Bc there're casual TCG players who are enthusiast for specific character card (me included, I'm Ganyu enjoyer.), I would want to see videos that compile deck recommendation for each of older character cards. They don't have to be meta contenders, just fun decks or strong enough to have some chance in AoC. *You can divide into videos for each element and you can do this kind of video every patches TCG get large update.

That's a neat idea! Although with the rate they release characters it's going to be really hard to reasonably keep up and have all characters well represented. Honestly the best thing to do here is to ask for recommendations on TCG communities like Discord or Reddit for deck ideas

@@blepthecat Maybe focusing more on weaker and old character cards or cards that that haven't seen people play or talk about. Kinda like genshin youtubers try to beat abyss with "weak" characters in game, but for TCG and beating AoC in this case.

Another general tip i would give is don't play cards if you don't have a reason let's say you're at the end of the round with 0 dice and a liben in hand you don't have to play liben,liben will do nothing let's say you do anyway and next round you have really bad dice if you kept liben you could have tuned and maybe done something but now he's played and completly useless it's sort of in the same vain as don't play cards too early and don't reveal info to your opponent unnecessarily also liben isn't the best example but i hope my point was understood

Ah that's a good point I missed for sure! Playing out cards unnecessarily can definitely get you into trouble if you happen to roll poorly and just needed one extra card to tune.

Haha true! That's why some Kaveh decks choose to run Kusava. While it can brick your burst scans every now and then, the upside of playing it so you can do 3 skills in a round is arguably better

Not paying attention to the debuff (such as elemental aura, strictly prohibited from Fortress of Meropide) and buff (which is the kit that the character are built in) of every characters that provides in the TCG is the gravest mistake that both new and pro players are making Another biggest tip to win the tcg is to always pass turn to your opponent and NEVER bring Kathryne when you have "Leave it to me" as a way to surprise the opponent Another mistake that i think that most tcg players have notice or not have notice is that you should NEVER switch character and use an ability with a "Prepared Skills". Assuming that throughout the process, you are not gonna do anything other than watching the character do their thing and thats also because there are instances where it is very inconsistent way to damage your opponent than a Single hit from your character (especially if your character is super low). Always apply critical thinking first before using an ability that has Prepared Skills

"Always" and "NEVER" are... honestly a bit strong. The only time that "always" applies is exceptions to the "rules". There are situations you definitely _should_ bring Katheryn. Like against freeze, especially if your opponent has Judgement or Meropide. Also bringing a "Leave it to me" can still surprise your opponent if your Katheryn has already been used for the round. I'm not sure what you mean by "always pass the turn" either. There are just as many situations where you shouldn't pass the turn as ones where you should. I have a feeling it's the same for your last paragraph as well, but I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to get across there.

@@dMb1790 its the same word so no worries Edit: By "pass the turn", i meant once you do the action, its the opponents turn but i think you already know that one so no need to explain on this part Edit 2: i almost forgot the part where you mention katheryne only good in freeze team deck (which i meant ayaka) however in my part i don't think bringing Kathryne would complete the turn but very situational like you mentioned

Also, I didn’t say “only” freeze I said “like against freeze”, and I’m not sure where Ayaka even comes into this… “but I think you already know so no need to explain” Honestly, I’m having trouble understanding the way you write, so I’ll have to disagree on that point, not really sure on the rest since I’m not sure what you are trying to say. Edit: I’m just coming off of an extremely hectic 12 hour hospital shift, so maybe the problem is with me. I’ll try to decipher what you are saying after I get some sleep.

That's why I enjoy occasionally playing the odd characters who barely ever see play - no one knows their kits and gets very surprised at some non-obvious mechanics. Like people thinking a 7-8HP character can tank a Ning ult because the card description only says it does 6 damage, while with shield on it does 8 but this info is hidden in skill description. Or people not understanding how Xinyan's ult procs. Lil stuff like this

When you do combat action or you end your turn, its the opponent's turn. But again i don't need to explains this since you pretty good in TCG Edit: Again, I would not recommend bringing kathryne unless you really want to use against freeze or any kind of deck you are facing so that's on my part and opinion

Omg I hate autodice so much, it goes back to the autodice even when I choose the dice I want to use if I accidentally click out and I waste so much of my dice because autodice eats up the dice I needed

5:33 is a big one. I wish there was a way to turn off autodice. And i dont know if it was fixed or not, or if i was tripping, but I'd use Send-off and it would autodice the moment i activate it and didnt give me a chance to select it.

Once you click on the target it will use whatever dice selected at that point which will always be automatic. I think in general autodice is good, there are very specific situations you want to manually select and most of the time you don't.
