How to raise many plants in a small area and set them out early. This can be a rapid process, meaning you save time, space and resources.
How to use module trays with small cells. Which plants are suitable, which are not - as in my examples.
See results of multisowing spring onions, beetroot, radish, peas.
Large seeds like broad beans, no worries about the tap root. They grow fine in shallow module cells.
I show different procedures for warmth loving plants, such as potting on. I show cucumber, aubergine, tomato.
How much to harden off? - none if you use covers!
A big timesaver!!
00:00 Introduction
00:49 A tray of multisown beetroot and how they look at 22 days - now ready to go in the ground
01:25 Multisown onions, sown on same day as beetroot - also ready to go in the ground
01:50 Reasons for transplanting when small - lettuce as example
02:28 Why it's better for trays to sit on a pallet surface, as opposed to on compost or the ground
03:00 Info on compost for propagation, and watering
04:05 Module tray sown with large seeds of broad beans, and info about growth of the tap root
04:44 A look at a tray of peas, and reasons for planting deep
05:07 A tray of celeriac - not yet ready to go in the ground, slow growth as is normal for celeriac
05:52 Larger plants that need potting on due to lack of warmth outside - tomatoes and aubergines - and info on potting on
06:59 Why sow larger plants in seed trays or small module cells to start with, as opposed to seeding straight into larger pots?
07:58 Cucumber special, info on sowing times, potting on and watering
09:24 Hardening off plants - why I don’t do it and what I do instead
The module trays are my CD15s - distributor details below.

A comment for all the people just learning about Charles No Dig Techniques: Two years ago I started converting my backyard vegetable patch and my coldframe to Charles’ methods and the results have been extraordinary!! I follow his two main techniques very closely; 1. Start your seeds early in small trays in a coldframe or greenhouse 2. Make your own compost and spread an inch or two onto the surface of your garden beds before spring planting. I plant three times here on the west coast of Canada. My first seed batches are planted in my coldframe in early April; my second planting is in early June; my third planting of most winter vegetables is in later June and early July. Using my old system of planting seeds directly in the garden meant a large percentage of my garden space was always unproductive with small plants, but by starting each vegetable seed batch under cover, three batches each year, averaging 4 weeks for each coldframe batch means I am gaining an extra 12 weeks of garden growth per year. Comparing the old direct sowing method to Charles’ system, I have doubled, yes DOUBLED, my volume of fresh vegetables produced by my 600 sq ft garden. We rarely buy vegetables anymore because my garden is so productive now. PS. I recently bought a few of Charles new plant trays and I can confirm they are heavy duty and excellent quality.

Hear, hear! live just down the coast from you in NW Washington state and Charles' methods have taken me from a frustrated master gardener accustomed to the deep, loamy soils of Ohio, to an excited, gardening addict again! Gardening in the Pacific Northwest is a completely different experience from anywhere else I've gardened.

I began growing cannabis (indoor) with the intent for perpetual harvests. Lately, I'm learning that my grow room is all about seed-starting/propagation for garden vegetables during late winter/early spring; the cannabis takes a back-seat. Using no-till, even EarthBoxes (yup, worms and all), I'm learning to manage my limited space while working within zone 5a seasons to grow food for my family. Without people, such as CD, producing quality content, I would not have ventured down this extraordinary path.

The amount of space I save using multi sowing is a Godsend. I don’t have much space and I like to have flowers all year round so I pop veggies in the empty spaces. And having learned from Charles how to pick the outer leaves from my lettuce, I can have salad most of the year.

clay soil definitely demands a bit more time in the nursery but we are slowly improving the depth of compost in our bed areas so hopefully one day soon we can do this 🙏🏾
@tinnerste2507
@tinnerste2507 2 жыл бұрын
I've been amending my heavy clay soil with charcoal. It has really allowed my soil to get lighter and fluffy instead of waterlogged with almost slimy organic matter. I suspect that the dark color helps warm it up, but I usually put some kind of cover over my beds after I ammend them. Try it out in a spot and see. It can need a bit more fertilizer the first year with the charcoal though or your plants might be a bit smaller for a season.
@glenntamblyn3271
@glenntamblyn3271 2 жыл бұрын
@@tinnerste2507 Clay soils, in principle, should be fantastic. Good nutrients. But opening them up is hard. Have you considered planting deep rooting annuals, tillage radish etc, to try and drill down into the clay-y stuff, open up pathways for water, importantly oxygen, and encouraging soil life - from earthworms to microbes - to go deeper and get to work. With No-Till, every bit of 'good work' from micro-soil excavators gets preserved. No-Till will preserve what they do. But we can still hasten things along by encouraging them to get to work even more. No-Till preserves the work of 'others'. But we can still help them to get to work in the first place.
@tinnerste2507
@tinnerste2507 2 жыл бұрын
@@glenntamblyn3271 I have great soil under the perennials, but I live in Highland swampland so it gets compacted and waterlogged again quickly. Everywhere I've dug in charcoal is super fluffy, meaning the compost isn't waterlogged. I mostly plant perennials and practice a once or twice dig garden and afterwards leave it be. We have lots of water surface rooting plants like baldrian and meadowsweet etc.. Its not excellent for vegetables unamended. In the low spots I just put in raised beds, but they get heavy too if I don't put some charcoal in. I have amazing mineral rich soil, but little nitrogen and little water soluble nutrients because of the high rainfall. The charcoal traps water soluble minerals too. It's really helps

I have found multi-sowing a godsend as it has allowed me to grow so many more plants in a smaller space. Having said that, my greenhouse is bursting at the seams with plants having been potted on but not ready to go out yet and others having recently germinated, waiting for warmer weather. My hotbed that I made using warming cables has been a game changer and not heating the greenhouse (the first time in 15 years) has saved me a fortune and all my plants that I put out earlier under fleece are really romping away, especially the brassicas. Such an excellent method.

Interested to hear about your hotbed? Our greenhouse is very small how much space do you need?
@sharonscott8358
@sharonscott8358 2 жыл бұрын
@@anaphirirussell Muriel, I too have a small greenhouse it is 4ft by 4ft. I made a bed from wood and plywood just under 4ft long and about 18/20 inches wide and used plywood for the base. I drilled a hole in one end to thread a warming cable. I then lined the bottom with some polystyrene lids which I got from my local fishmonger and then lined the whole thing with plastic (recycled compost bags are ideal). Most people suggest using sand but I had loads of recycled compost (we have lots of pots) and used that. I half filled it, threaded a warming cable up and down, making sure it didn't touch, and then topped it up with more recycled compost, watered well and then topped it up again once the soil had settled. I then put black bin liners on top and have raised all my plants that way. I do have a foldup bench which is 4ft by 18 inches in my greenhouse that I put the hotbed on. The temperature has been about 22 - 24 degrees C and I have found it to be remarkably good. It is the first time I had tried it and will definitely do it again next year. As I didn't heat my greenhouse this year on particularly cold nights, I just put fleece over the plants on the hot bed and they stayed nice and snug in there.

Saved my own onion and lettuce seed this year and a few of their runaway self sown offspring have appeared in the garden now - just before winter - eek. My garden seems to be evolving into a bit of a patchwork actually, with things planted here and there. Nice video - enjoyed that!

I use my rabbits to make amazing fertilizer lol. I feed all the garden scraps to my rabbits and they do all the hard work. What's nice about rabbit droppings is you can use them right away and they make an amazing liquid fertilizer plus you get a great source of meat. Chickens or ducks work well too but you do have to age it. Happy gardening.

Yes! My baby beets did get away from me but got them in the ground yesterday. I watch the weather as well for the calmer days when I put them out. My first time starting all my seeds in my glass greenhouse and it worked! I was very nervous about not using my grow lights inside but it worked! My husband built it for me last summer with all our recycled old windows we replaced from our house the year before! Thank you for your education that steps out of the boxes. I've had the best beets ever by starting them in cells! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge with us. I do already grow some of the varieties you have mentioned. I find them most satisfactory, although I realise that maybe other varieties may grow better depending on location/ soil? I'd best get my seeds ordered before there is a rush and the seeds sell out. Happy gardening

First year for pre multi sewing beets…looking good…will go in the garden tomorrow along with multi sewn radishes and boston lettuce. Nice to hear you mention planting by the moon. Can’t always follow the time frame but like to give it a shot when I can. I have a tendency to over water. Different plants, different requirements.

Hi Charles I just recived this Text from a Friend of mine when I told him I was doing the No Dig Course Online which I am Really Enjoying Doing. This was the Text he Sent Me I thourght you may want to Read it and Pass it on to Your Members. Have A Good Day Pete Hi Pete No Dig Gardening makes Sense. Just think of the Dust Bowl in America caused by Overuse of Machinery back in 20ties. Let the Worms ect do their Job. So Plots like Gardens and Allotment’s are probably even more important. We try to Push Nature to Unnatural Extremes to get More Out of the Land.

Another great video Charles. Just a comment on germination times. Courgettes sown in the greenhouse took 3 weeks to germinate. I had given up on them, bought some more seeds, put them in my ancient Woolworths electric propagator and were up in less than a week.

I have started using plastic water bottles to start seeds. I accidentally started about 30 Russian Krim tomatoes in one tiny water bottles that I cut almost in half and filled half way up with soil, watered, and then taped back up until the plants all sprouted. The seeds were from 2014 so I wanted to check propagation viability. I transplanted once they got their second leaves. I am shocked how little room it takes to start a ton of seeds. Those big propagation trays are not necessary. Thank you for teaching us how to do this.

Thank you! So informative, as always. I don't harden off, I use the fleece. Noone has died yet! I keep clear corrugated plastic ready to put on top of the fleece, if a hard frost is threat, but havent used it in a while. Play Veedon Fleece when you fleece the seedlings, for full effect. ;)

Here in Belgium the only plants I harden are tomatoes, pepper bells and melon plants. I find that when I do they not only produce more but also are more resistant to the sometimes horrible weather here.

Interesting you mention the moon, I use The Farmers Almanac, they offer several days for planting as well as when to weed. No dig gardening leaves few weeds to start with, using their dates means even less. They're also pretty spot with their weather predictions. It really is rather amazing how much you can actually grow using your method of gardening.

Great video as always, Charles! On the hardening topic, I noticed that even when my little plants are by the window, inside, receiving several hours of sun a day, they still get burned when I bring them outside. I suspect it's because my windows absorb most of the strong UV light. I believe greenhouse glass isn't treated for that.
@CharlesDowding1nodig

Thanks Rafael. I am not sure and that does not sound right, I wonder if it could actually be to do with the seedlings being weak from having light only on one side. I would keep them outside as much as possible

Things look great, I agree with the cells verses small pot sowing, I prefer pricking out then potting on, plus there's not much else to do at the end of winter waiting for the snow to melt where I am. You also end up with every cell having a plant by pricking out, instead of hit and miss with germination and you end up with dead cells. Not to mention it's more personal, raising, caring for and I've named a few team leaders over the years and give them the primo locations out in the garden. I have 3 butternut squashes that are exceptional right now, I named them the "Hanson brothers", they're tough little buggers.
