Dilla's verse on this song is what introduced me to Slum Village. Immediately went to Tower Records before noon the next day and there was one copy left in the store. I was lucky. Got home, put it in the disc changer, and the rest was history. RIP to the greatest to ever do it. 21 years later...it's still crankin'.

The beats on Common’s Like Water for Chocolate album sent me down a rabbit hole, started reading the credits on a lot of my favorite songs. James Yancey aka J Dilla was the common denominator. Grabbed Fantastic V2 IMMEDIATLY because Thelonius was also on it. I was a Dilla fan and didn’t even know.

I remember Common told a story about "Thelonius" at one of his concerts I attended. He literally paused the show and was telling a story about Dilla and the song "Thelonius". As his story was coming to an end you could hear the bass line from the song start coming in and everybody already knew what he was gonna perform next. That whole concert was like a DIlla tribute. Greatest concert Ive ever been too. Jay Electronica opened for him that night, and he was also going over Dilla beats. It was amazing.

Dilla floats on that beat. He delivers his verses as if they were “off the top”. The beat even more special especially if you’re a crate digger and you know the sample. Who would’ve thought to take that part of that song? Two bars (the most) and he cooks up a banger. RIP Dilla Dawg and George Duke.

I was looking at a hip hop magazine. It had the advertisement of "Like water for 🍫 (2000)" in it. It was originally supposed to come out in 1999. But listening 🎧 to Common tell this story about Jay Dilla's recording and 💭 process to approaching songs particularly doing "Thelonius" I now understand part of the reason why the release date 📅 got pushed back. It came out in March of 2000 instead. Sometimes you have to still fine tune some songs until you get it right! Like I commented on other people's pages that "Like water for 🍫" is one of my favorite Common albums. I hope Common makes more music! He's insanely talented artist. With their music any part could've been picked like that. Such a sick album all the way through. Baatin's whole thing is crazy
