Do you have questions about the Simple Single Plane Golf Swing? If so, this video is for you. In this video, I cover various topics that you have asked for the past few months. This includes such things as:
1) What is the Single Plane difference between irons and woods?
2) How do you take a divot?
3) What is the proper amount of spine tilt?
4) How do you stop hitting the ball fat?
5) How do you stop releasing early?
and many more...
At the end of the video, I also demonstrate a chip and run from off the green that I am researching. Join me on my Single Plane journey - as I become a better player with the Single Plane Golf swing and help you along the way.
The Single Plane golf swing is not a quick fix golf technique. It is a system, beginning at address, that simplifies the most important moment of the golf swing - impact.
Starting at address on two planes where the arms hang straight down at address, the Conventional golf swing is complicated. Because the arms are hanging straight down, a conventional golfer must lift the body into impact creating stress on the back.
This upward movement to accommodate the two planes is unnecessary.
The Single Plane Golf swing simplifies the golf swing by eliminating the need for the upward movement by starting and impacting on the same plane.

Mr. Graves, thank you! The domino effect is real. I have just begun my golf adventure this last summer. Trying to ingrain this swing. However I started to develop a slice on my irons and felt my club opening up on contact, I became very frustrated with no idea of what was going on. SoI started rewatching all of your videos. Short of it is, gripping your club after the tilt, solved it. Back to feeling confident on my swing with straight shots. Just that one little detail overlooked wrecked my swing. THANKS AGAIN. I really do believe simplifying your swing will increase consistency! Thanks for teaching!

Todd, you explained the hook correction about mid conversation well. I hooked ball but had too strong a grip. The tilt first is the key! I gripped club then tilted. Can’t wait to try the tilt then grip. Thanks!!

Hit a bucket of balls today at range with single plane. First, my body felt fine. Second, my dispersion was excellent. Third, my distance was same with some longer than ever. 7 handicap 64 years old ,conventional swing since I started 7 years ago. What to change because my body was absolutely killing me the day after playing. Thanks for all your support.

Hi Todd. Your advice about releasing the club head early,.. brilliant observation. It’s something I’ve struggled with for years and could never figure out the problem. It’s especially prevalent when I use my driver. And of course… with my driver I tend to turn my torso too far on the back swing, and then stop too soon on the downswing. Thank you for that insight.. amongst many others.

73 going on 74. In my 7th year of golf. Normal score for me was high 90's, sometimes over 100 (26 handicap). Every shot was a gamble, 30% or more were awful. Been working for 2 months on your method. Now normal score is low 90's, sometimes in the 80's. My awful shots are under 10%. Still struggling but I see real improvement. Thanks Todd.

I can't believe it took me this long to find this. I seen Bryson D but didn't think I would try to swing like that. I'll tell you, after 30 years hacking it with conventional swing I finally broke down and called an instructor and took 2 lessons the other week. What I realized is that, I will need to practise and perfect the many nuances of the swing, especially with driver which I really struggled with. I think played a round and despite his sound instruction, was no better. I then immediately began looking around for help on youtube and came across this. I am so ready to try this and ditch all that nonsense which I feel I will never try get down pat. I haven't tried it but seen most of your videos since and I really want this to be the way forward for me. For life. What was interesting is that I noticed my friend with driver and he hits it well. He definitely had this swing as I noticed the outstretched arms and how different it looked. I think the other clubs too but noticeable with driver. He will hit a push fade or go dead right sometimes he doesn't have the technique down cold but he has this setup.

Just learning about the single plan swing! Love your references to the great MO. I stumbled upon the single plane swing naturally, I was at the range with extremely high tees which forced me to raise the club head and naturally straighten my lead arm. I was trying to hit up at the ball by lowering my trail arm which naturally gave me a body tilt. I was also trying a wider stance. I started hitting the ball straighter and longer than ever before. I am so excited to continue exploring and learning the single plane swing. Thank you for your pursuit of a repeatable golf swing, with less moving parts, so we can play more consistent golf! Another great explanation of the swing Todd, so many keys one is having to put into place! I start my downswing with the butt of the club shaft at the ball like skipping a rock, as you once said in your earlier video's and this prevents me from casting etc! Many thanks Todd, you have helped me and am sure many others with all the time you put in in getting the one plane swing across to us golfers!

Great issues/solutions coaching lesson Todd. About six weeks in now and have never been more confident with your SP training and my improvement!! For me, my Driver improved first adding 30 yards (so happy). Footnote: I think the more likes you get the more KZfaq shares your work. The reason I mention this is I went to 5 different teachers before your channel showed up. I noticed in many of your videos (older ones) that you didn’t as for thumbs up. Todd - thank you for these videos and your detailed attention to the single plane. This video starting 21 minutes in (prox.), connected a few dots missing in my swing. As a single planer we begin straight legged and transition downward and finish against a braced leg looking sideways. In my current swing the transition forward does not include the downward, part I truly hope this is the missing DOT. Bty, I am 71, a veteran, 14.6 index with 20% use of my left hand and solely because of your hands being clamps description I chose your method and am very happy I did. If this dot will help in keeping my right foot on the ground and stop lifting up I could perhaps shoot my age before turning 94. Many thanks.

I can relate to incorrect tilt angle (over-tilting) and failure to keep my left knee flexed ( I had a straight lead or left leg) through impact. I took a video of my swing and immediately identified my outcome expectations would never be achievable because my swing faults, which emanate from failing to master each phase or step of the SPS, would always deliver poor results, and unhappy golf. Back to basics! My plan 1. Master each step by getting the bio-mechanics right 2. Create a fluid SPS by completing each step without consciously thinking about the process 3. Take my fluid SPS to the golf course (not the range) to hit golf balls that I regularly play (not inconsistent range balls) over measurable distance speeds. I’m working through step one and hoping to enter step two in a few weeks. Thanks Todd - keep the informative lessons and tips flowing.

Guys save this vid and watch over and over. Use it as your in person lesson with Todd if you can't go see him. It's all there or here for you to digest. Another suggestion would be buy the alignment too Todd has which shows ball position, feet position and width. Had mine for years now and always use it while on the range. Also pay attention on how to move the lead shoulder position with the club your using by adjustment of the trail foot, that is a must or you will never be a one plane swinger. Stability as Todd describes is also one of the keys which will set the Dominoes up to fall in sequence. Keep this vid under lock and key it's all here!!!!

I started the change in June 2020. Its taken me 5 months and lots of swings into my golf net and at the driving range but I'm finally at the point that the swing feels natural. I've had the same swing for 38 years so it was difficult to stop setting up in the traditional setup, and I mean difficult. But over time, I started seeing results and I'm so pleased with the change. I'm improving every round now, not so much score, although that has improved, but my overall ball striking with every club. Especially my driving. I did lose some distance but I feel like I can get that back (and slowly its coming back) now that I have full confidence in the set up, ball position, and the club swing path. It's a much better world for me when I can hit the ball where I'm aiming!

I was hitting good drivers and was toeing or thinning irons. Through the years I have probably straightened up to hit irons using the conventional swing and that was why I was toeing or thinning my irons. My thins were still getting up in the air and going straight. This video has helped me in a couple of areas. I went back to my old swing for one day and couldn't hit my irons at all. It was awful. This is the real deal, I just wish it wasn't the end of September in Michigan. I purchased your single plane trainer and one of your videos and they helped me. I will be buying your alignment and ball position board and setting up with all my clubs over and over this winter. Also, I have an armoire with a full length mirror in my living room that is very helpful. And, I have a yardstick marked with the distance each iron should be from my toe line. I line this straight out from the big toe on my trail foot and can see how far away from me each club should be.

Again great golden material. Your SP teaching is gold standard but you've taken it up notches with the on course, real life golf scenarios. If you ever get the chance please do a teaching bit on "pelvic thrust" i.e. raising up out of front tilt on back swing. I do the chair exercise from Gold membership (it helps a lot), and I bought a SteadHead which also is very helpful, but when I record myself DTL, I STILL fight it ever so slightly and it's driving me nuts. Again, much appreciate all you do. Bob

Thank you - I was hooking the ball and could not figure out the correct way to straighten it out. I also struggle with trying to flex my left knee and when I do it seems like I do it too much and mess up my shot. I heard Moe say he pulls with his left and I do find that when I concentrate on pulling the shot with my left arm I can get better contact with the ball. I only wish I was starting this at a younger age because even at 59 your videos have improved my golf so much.

Todd - good info on the bump and run when you need to land the ball in the grass or fringe in front of the green. When landing the ball “ON” the green, here are my findings on carry and roll out with different clubs: Lob wedge is 50% carry, 50% roll out. Pitching wedge is one to two (one in the air and two rollout), 9i is a 3:1 roll out, 8i is a 4:1 roll out, etc. based on a flat green. So a 20 yard chip or pitch to the hole (if landing the ball on the green in each case) has several options. Land a lob wedge 10 yards onto the green and let it roll out 10 yards. Land a PW 7 yards from the ball onto the green and let it roll out 14 yards (2:1 rollout). Land a 9i 5 yards on the green and let it roll out 15 yards (3:1), etc. Landing the ball onto the green is more consistent than landing into the rough or fringe of varying lengths and softness/hardness if that is an option. Much more predictable and consistent.

Great stuff as always Todd. With regard to the "hybrid" swing, I have seen other variations of SPS made to work. And I don't actually think that you teach SPS anyway. I believe that you teach Moe Norman's swing (brilliantly!) and that SP is just one - albeit the fundamental -aspect of his swing. I tried for years and until I found you on KZfaq, failed miserably to 'trap' Moe's swing. He was a great guy and a genius but couldn't teach for toffee. Your analysis of his swing is superb and your presentation of the results succinct and simple. As soon as I started to focus on the swing restrictions you identified it all clicked into place. Thank you so much.

Interesting. Yes, restrictions or limits of body motion are the “bookends” of the swing. Without them you have no framework to work within. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for making these videos Todd! I just started golfing 5 months ago and while I've progressed, it's been inconsistent with my best round of 18 only being 111 so far. My biggest problem has been ball striking. I stumbled across your videos recently and everything made plenty of sense so I tried the single plane swing for the first time the other day at the range despite friends who have been golfing for 10+ years trying to talk me out of it. And WOW what an impact it made! I was striking my irons straight and long, making great contact about 80-85% of the time. Previously I'd be anywhere from 30-40% on a rough day to 50-60% on my best day. I didn't fare so well with my hybrid, wood, or driver though. But I realized after watching more videos I was doing it wrong! My address was incorrect by lining up the club head to the ball, not in the center in front of me. And I wasn't lining up the ball closer to the shaft vs middle of club head. Makes sense why I seemed to get away with it on the shorter clubs but not the long ones. So I'm looking forward to getting back out to the range to make this correction and see if I can get the same basically instant gratification as I did with my wedges and irons. So thank you again!

Todd. Here in California your two bounce chip shot is very difficult on courses with Kikuya grass. Many times that first bounce will stop or backup. Need to use a much less lofted club and it can be a very tricky shot. I am in the process of converting to the Single Plane Swing. I am eighty years old and four months ago had a left knee replacement. Over the last four or five years my handicap has gone from an eight to beyond 17. The old swing does not work or feel comfortable. Hoping to get back to better golf through your system . Thank you for your series.

Hi Todd, I truly enjoy your videos. I watched Moe on the range in the 1990s and it was sensational. One comment... The swing you teach doesn't look any simpler than my conventional swing. It seems to have the same complications such as rotating the lower body, and the sequencing the upper and lower with the arms and getting the club face square at impact. I fail to see how the single plane is any easier than a conventional swing based on your videos and question and answer. It still seems to require a lot of ongoing range practice for proficiency.

There are Five basic "biomechanical" reasons the Single Plane Swing that you see me using is easier. 1) the club starts and impacts on the same Impact plane - Reducing Shaft Lift. This makes it easier because it eliminates the variable of the shaft changing elevation thus the body moves less. 2) Because of the tilt of the body at address (side bend or side tilt) the trial hand is in a non rotational position. Reducing Rotation. Thus the trail does not rotate from address through impact. 3) The pelvis does not lift into impact thus reducing stress and compression on the back. Reducing stress. 4) Range of Motion Limits is a biomecancial term for the maximizing body's range of movement. The Single Plane swing positions the body to reach "limits" which makes repetition easier. You can find out more here :moenormangolf.com/store/products/the-laws-of-simplicity/

Thanks for creating a video answering frequently asked questions. Many were questions I had/have as I continue through my journey to the feeling of greatness. May I ask you if there are any drills you recommend in order to get comfortable with the overlap grip? I feel most comfortable when I interlock but do notice my wrists are closer together with the Vardon grip which I understand you recommend. Is the answer to simply continue to practice with the overlap grip until I am comfortable with it? Thank you in advance!

Thanks for a great video! I am hoping to take one of your week long classes here in Phoenix. I tried switching to the single plane swing about four years ago. When I first started I hit a lot of shots thin. Then it fell together. Ball was going right at the pin for many rounds. Now somehow I have done something wrong. The ball with most of my irons is either going straight right or a pull hook to the left. I know the right shots my club face is open to the path of my swing. And I am not sure why I pull hook the ball so bad. But when I place the club back down after a pull hook it is very closed.

My big point of confusion is sidehill lies for sure. Especially lies where the ball is significantly above my feet. I don't think I ever hit it pure out of those, and I attribute part of it to just being unable to practice them. On the range, you never have that obviously, but I do think the single plain swing elements also make it worse for me. What do you do about spine tilt and ball position when you are on those slopey lies? Seems like if I try to keep the swing in-tact I usually end up popping the ball up if its in the rough, or hitting it fat otherwise. Seems like this is being covered in the next video though, so I am eager to see it!

Todd... Thanks for this video. I have completely transformed my swing to SP, but am still jumping. I recorded myself now hundreds of times and still doing it. I find this part of the swing the hardest to get down. I'll just have to keep working on it. I know that you aren't a big proponent of drills (per another video), but I'm currently struggling to understand what feel I should have without isolating this part of the swing and drilling the behavior I want. Any help on this would help. Thanks again for all the great content.

Just my 2 cents. I think the jumping is coming from wanting to crush the ball. While I'm not a proponent and neither is Todd, of "swinging easy", especially with irons. I would try dialing the swing back, think of like 80-85% of full power. So just take it down one notch, this could help eliminate that jumping. Also maybe practice "half swings", like try hitting an 8 iron only 100 yards. That kind of stuff.

The Moe Norman vertical drop and horizontal tug has got me a believer. I tried this on the course and couldn’t believe the results. Your videos are also real helpful. I live in Broken Arrow and went to the range the other day. I intentionally slowed my left shoulder down and hit straighter after pulling a few. Do you still offer instruction? Who do you recommend for club fitting? Thanks! Bill K

Aloha Todd, from the Big Island of Hawai'i! Love the single plane swing, and after just using it once playing local muni course, I was amazed at how straight I hit the driver. The irons are another story, but I'll work that out on the range with your tips. But I have a question regarding knee pain: am I keeping the back foot planted for too long? Seems the pain arrived about the same time I started trying this method. Mahalo nui (thank you much) for any insight you can share!

So with Bryson Dechambeau, his left foot is twisted after impact. I know with the one plane swing, you want the lead knee to stay flexed at impact. Is it ok to twist the lead foot like how Bryson does it?

Good info. Question: When you talk about stance width and ball position you do not mention club head position. I notice that you set the club face 2 to 4 inches behind the ball. Is this part of the standard address? How does this position affect the swing? Seems like it would create an early hip turn? Is your eye focus on the ball, club head or both?????

If you look in a mirror at yourself, "from down the line", your right forearm will be on the same plane as the club shaft, a little space also between the left(higher) and the right forearm(lower). When in this position and the club soled properly, that will be your approximate distance from ball. Also, very little, if any bend of the knees.

This is my 2nd year learning the swing. I tee up my driver on my toe and crush it, but when I hit my irons I push the ball to the right (right handed). I have a problem of getting square at contact and not hitting my irons solid. I am guessing I am moving to much to my left side. I did the same thing with the driver until I addressed the ball about 10" behind the ball. I address my irons the same way but still not hitting them straight. I am going to have my son video tape me.

Width changes effective loft at impact. So you would swing too much up on irons and too much down on woods.

Hi I am enjoying your videos and I am starting to practice this kind of swing but I have a question. At 2:05 in the video you mention the club is in line with your trail arm with the behind view but anytime there is a side view ,the club never looks aligned with the trail arm but always looks aligned with the lead arm. Am I misunderstanding something?

Thats right. From the down the line view, the club aligns with the trail arm. From the face on view, it aligns with the lead arm. That is the ideal address.
