I have patchy, textured, moody rosacea on a 63 year old face, so chemical exfoliants and chemical SPF are out of the question. I exfoliate certain areas only with micellar water on textured cotton pads or on a velour-textured microfiber cloth. Only once a week, and I rinse with distilled water spray even though the labels of micellar waters say "no rinsing necessary." I pat dry after every cleansing, every day, with a clean terry towel laundered in fragrance-free laundry soap and without fabric softeners. If the weather's nice, I hang my face cloths and towels to dry on a rack inside an open window. I keep serums and moisturizers down to the basics: Vitamin C gel-cream and a Peptide booster serum, with a Korean brand moisture cream that contains Zeolite, a natural antibacterial that doesn't burn. My dermatologist actually recommended the Zeolite ingredient; so far, so good. And I always use mineral-only SPF; Australian Gold makes a nice one with SPF 50. I've had really good luck with this "special needs" routine for this complexion of mine, and I find all I need for evening out my coloring is a light dusting of mineral powder foundation, well buffed in. No color correcting, other than around my eyes. Of course all my complexion brushes get washed every week, even if I only wear makeup on two or three days. Love your video, and the forthright manner in which you present your experiences! Thanks for your energy!

I think it’s important to also put skin care on the back of your neck, not just on the front of your neck and chest. Also, I assume I need to wear SPF even if I’m not going outside because of sunlight coming in the window. Thanks for the top 10! I will certainly take them all to heart. Happy weekend!

Agree and ears as well. I'm indoors during the week but sit by windows and also drive which is exposure people often disregard. Always wear spf50 because of this. My dermatologist says she's noticed

Great video Gemma, my biggest skincare mistake was using too many products in a quest for anti ageing, my sensitised reactive dehydrated destroyed skin barrier visited a dermatologist who gave me the simplest parred back routine using an Australian pharmacy brand designed for dry sensitive skin…..I can’t believe how simple gentle hydrating basic routine changed my skin, for some of us simple is better. My only active now is vitamin A which I never thought I’d be able to use again and all the money I’ve saved on products more than covers the cost of dermatology visits. Yes I do get bored with the same simple routine and long to buy something new but I’ve gotten so many compliments on my 60 year old skin that I’ll take that as a win. I’ve used SPF 50 on all exposed areas for 34 years now I’m in Australia and spent a stint in my earlier nursing years in plastics in a large teaching hospital……lots of skin cancers excised. It’s mineral only for my face these days and fragrance free chemical below the neck. Simple skincare SPF and a really lovely derm has saved my skin.

Great video, good advice, glad you mention pillowcases, I only buy bed sets that come with 4 pillowcases, I use one pillowcase for about 3 days and then middle week I put another one but if I need I have a bunch of white ones to use more often, since I was a kid I have had this habit, it's very rare for me to have skin issues although my skin was always on the oily side, and I say it's ( maybe ) because I am careful with pillow cases, great advice...all the best... where is Ralph?

I have quite a few wrinkle and tone devices, after spending my hard earned money, most are now sat in drawers diong nothing. I have learnt and now use the nuface mini every day, only been using it for about 3 month, I have noticed a slight improvement. I use a different cloth on my face every day but also use a guest towel to dry it, I have quite a few of both, 5 cleansing cloths 4 flannels and 7 muslin cloths so I have enough for the week, guest towels I never used to use except in the toilet and having bought lots of towel bales when the kids were younger I have 12 of them. I use a cloth a day and a towel a day as I was getting a few spots and had already started this routine before you mentioned it. When I wash them I always put the washer on for another rinse as I noticed washing powder was left in the drum somewhere. I use spf everyday and topup faithfully but I also have a large sunspot on my cheek, I have used vit C and retinol everyday but yes it's alot lighter but it's only in the last year thatI've noticed a slight decrease in size. Pillows I change every 2 days, mum did and I just copied it.XX

I think so few people understand about bacteria transferase to their skin. I'm germ aware, so I consider those things. Other people don't need to give a hoot if they don't want to, but if they have skin issues, then they should consider some things that may help them. I know some people think their body or immunity can develop a resistance to certain things, but sometimes it just doesn't. I finally gave in and take allergy medication because I was tired of sneezing 50 + times a day and my nose running constantly. I can't keep a completely dust free environment, because we all have other obligations and need to relax.

Good sensible advice, as always with you Gemma. I am sooooo aware that I should be using an spf every day, but I don’t….. main reason is that I haven’t found one that doesn’t break me out, and I NEVER get spots, except when I use an spf. So far the beauty pie one works best, but I’m scared of using every day, in case it too breaks me out. I do try to use a moisturiser that has an spf, but I know that’s not good enough. Help!

I have always struggled with SPF creams causing spots. I currently have three that have worked for my skin. The first I found was REN clean screen mineral SPF but it is pricey. The second which I adore and still use is Drunk Elephant UmbraSheer physical daily defence SPF 30 also quite pricey but quite a bit better than REN and if you use Gemma's look fantastic code you can get 20% off which really helps. The final one was recommended by Gemma and I wasn't sure if it would work but it's been brilliant - Korean brand Isntree hyaluronic acid watery sun gel SPF 50. This one is so much more affordable than the other two especially if you get it through Stylevanna and select one of their multi packs. They take 2 or 3 weeks to arrive but the savings are absolutely worth it for me. As Gemma says, you don't know how your skin will react but they might be worth a try. I can't use the Korean one around my eyes because it makes them stream like I'm crying so I use the Drunk Elephant SPF around my eyes and the Korean one on the rest of my face, ears and neck. It's also really easy to top it up through the day and still no break outs. It saves me money and time getting ready in the morning and no spots! Perhaps one will work for you too 😊🤞

I don't know who would listen to this advice, but I would add: Don't take good skin for granted! I was blessed with good skin and was way too late in starting a skin care regime. I'm now 56 and really wishing I had started taking care of my skin much younger. Luckily I still have good skin, but the sun spots and wrinkles might not be as noticeable had I started sooner.

As an Aussie I can attest to the need for daily sunscreen. The higher the SPF the better. Chemical or mineral-whatever suits your skin type. Please I beg you all to wear sunscreen everyday of your life. And that of your children too. I’ve had several BCC’s removed and no doubt there will be more in the future. With every cut or nitro blast there are a scars and recovery time. And that’s a good result. If it is in fact a melanoma then…there is more of a lottery situation at play. As Gemma says just wear the sunscreen.

Exfoliating 2-3 times per week is FAR too much and will ruin your skin barrier. It should be once per MONTH. Skin cells do not regenerate and shed within 48 hours. It takes 28-40 days in someone middle aged. For seniors, around 80 days. I am a qualified beauty therapist with many years experience
@cathrynanderson9524
@cathrynanderson9524 9 ай бұрын
❤ I say this with utmost respect, but I feel like that's really what Gemma is saying - what I got from her comment is that 2-3x is max and that would be for people who may have a condition that requires more exfoliation than someone else. I am 50yo with very dry, dehydrated skin - I use dermelect sleep serum once, sometimes twice a week - it's very gentle and it's really helped my skin be less dry. I do this because I use tret 5 nights a week, sometimes one night I'll use no actives at all. This has really helped my dryness, and the sleep serum helps keep excessive dryness caused by tret. She also mentions how important it is to listen to your skin. There's no strict rule book that can be applied to every single person, skin care is very personal. 🩷🩷🩷

2-3 times a week is the maximum I suggest. This is also what most Dermatologists would recommend. I appreciate your comment and your expertise, as I (as you know) am also highly qualified in this area. X
@twoleftfeet9626
@twoleftfeet9626 9 ай бұрын
@@cathrynanderson9524 I agree that skincare is very personal, but skin cell regeneration generally isn't. 2-3 times a week of exfoliation is definitely too much, even for people with particular conditions. I had a quick google of the dermelect sleep serum. This appears to be an AHA/BHA treatment serum, not an actual exfoliator like the Ordinary AHA exfoliator. If you used The ordinary exfoliator 2-3 times a week, you would have a very damaged skin barrier after a little while. Glycolic acid is the main chemical exfoliator ingredient. I compared the concentration between the sleep serum and the ordinary exfoliator. The sleep serum has a glycolic acid concentration of 2%-4%. Whereas the ordinary has a concentration of 20%-30% so they are very different animals, and thus the sleep serum cannot really be classed as an actual exfoliator with such weak concentration. I am not suggesting you should not use the sleep serum, but it cannot be compared like for like to a proper chemical exfoliator due to concentration levels

I have seen loads of skin damage caused by using coconut oil instead of spf and that was by people over 20 years ago, when the knowledge wasn't as good as it is now. It will not stop skin cancer either.😢

@@clarefrench4669 it may depend which oil you used. My cousin used an oil, not sure which but it was runny and yellowish, she's paying the price today. For some reason I think coconut oil is different, or like you say I was lucky! I'm so sorry you are paying the price today.

I mean no disrespect Gemma, but the subject that people never discuss when talking about skin is your DNA. Your heritage, your background has everything to do with how your skin is, no one discusses this because you can't sell DNA.

I completely get that, but the topic of DNA has nothing to do with skincare mistakes so it obviously isn’t mentioned in this video. X
