Did you guys just say that Majora's Mask 3D had better boss fights? You clearly didn't actually play Majora's Mask N64.

While Ocarina of Time will always hold an extremely special place in my heart as the game that essentially introduced me to games, I have to appreciate Majoras Mask so much not only for how quality it was, but for how WELL they designed the game in such a small timeframe. Never before or since has there been such an intense sense of foreboding in the WAY Majoras Mask encapsulated you in it's world. Ocarina of Time was iconic for its ingenuity and progression overall as a game. OoT was ahead of its time but Majoras Mask was art.

Ocarina of Time is an adventure. Majora's Mask is an experience.

Best game ever... I want to cry every time I see it or hear the music. All I picture is playing it as a child with my brother for hours. My brother passed away and this game was our favorite memory.

I love both equally so I don’t really mind, they’re both 10/10 games in my opinion. Ocarina of Time has the better sense of adventure and grander quest while Majora’s Mask has the better atmosphere and characters.

I like MM more because it took us away from the “get strong sword and save Zelda” plot, it was a breath of fresh air. I also adored the eerie feeling of the game, the dark and grimy textures on the N64 version and the side characters and quests.

Why do people hate on the water temple and great bay temple? Water temple may not be the best dungeon in OOT but I think its still good, and great bay temple is my favourite temple in MM but thats just my opinion tho.

The game found me, I came across a golden N64 cartridge with its title picture completely scratched off. (So I had no idea what game it was) I went home... BotW is my first Zelda game & I’m loving it. It’s really cool to see that all these elements I’m just learning have been around for a LONG time! Makes the lore feel that much deeper.

For me Oot is what classic Zelda games are in story, dungeons, gameplay while Majoras mask is like a black sheep with its dark story/themes and characters that breaks away from save Zelda and the kingdom from Ganon(or any demise incarnation). It dives into its characters mentally, so it's really up to what you prefer: The Big adventure or the side characters. I love Majoras mask for it's side quests but I prefer Ocarina for Not only it's classic story but also It's effect on the overall timeline.

One thing you fail to mention is how dramatic of a change the games brought to design during its time. Ocarina was a massive step forward, jumping from 2d to outright inventing 3d solutions that are still used today. Majora utilized most of OoT's advancements, and even its art resources. Historical context is often more important than direct comparisons.

I feel like majoras mask doesn't really have a main story. It has a central plot with many different stories throughout.

I really hate that for most new reviews on youtube about these 2 zelda games they use 99% footage from the 3DS versions, I wish they'd show more of the originals.

You can't truly and fully appreciate what OoT did to the gaming world if you didn't play at launch. MM is an amazing game but doesn't have that impact of "That first time" feeling you get that OoT had. As a 11 year old playing OoT for the first time I experienced joy, laughter, excitement, fear, shock. Never again did a video game put me through those kind of emotions. MM done a few things better like side quests and NPCs and let's you play as a Deku, Goron, Zora. It also has the greatest iteration of Link ever in a LoZ game, Fierce Deity.

I like to think of OoT and MM as a pair of games that should be played together. One after the other. To me they are a lot like Ages and Seasons in that regard.

We all know. Faces of Evil and Wand of Gamelon beats all of the Zelda games combined.

The problem with the Majora's Mask dungeons is that they all feel off, like they were just thrown in because it's a Zelda game. At least in Ocarina the adult dungeons had specific themes (Fire, Water, Shadow etc.) That made them thematic and memorable. Imagine how lame it would've been if they'd just made a "Kakariko Village Temple" or "Death Mountain Temple" which is basically what they did for all the areas in MM. Kind of wished they'd just thrown out the idea of full dungeons and just had more mini-dungeons and areas like the Pirates' Fortress

I love 'em both, and I just wish we could have gotten a true sequel to these two games, where we see where Link went after he left Terminus.

I didn't like OoT much while Majora's Mask is among my top 10 favorite video games. I love how creepy and unsettling the atmosphere is. MM is one of the most memorable games I've played. The dark undertones and themes are extremely powerful and have left a lasting impact on me.

I've always liked Majora's Mask over Ocarina of Time, so this outcome is satisfying. Ocarina was my first Zelda game and it does hold a special place in my heart, but Majora's Mask refined everything that made OoT great and added even more. It's actually difficult for me to replay OoT sometimes because of its slower pace. The quickness offered by the Bunny Hood and Goron Mask and Superb Swimming offered by the Zora Mask combined with a more compact but interesting game world makes Majora's Mask so much more palatable.

You’re delusional to think majora has the better soundtrack

Although MM won, I believe it deserved to win one more category. Story. There is an insane amount of symbolism, true deep storytelling without exposition that leaves you wanting to know every single thing about every NPC so you can piece together what's happening in the absurd land of Termina. The main premise of the game can be heavily theorized in so many ways as to what it all means, eg. A lot of people think Link dies to Skullkid while searching for Navi then sells his soul to a theoretical devil (mask salesman) to reclaim his life, as with not doing so his true self is forever gone and he could only live the rest of his days as a deku child, and in doing so he cursed the entire land of Termina in to a living hell where everyone has to come to terms with the inevitable demise of their land and everything they know over an excruciatingly sorrowing 3 days, and have to live those 3 days over and over again until the end of time itself, leading Link or the happy mask salesman to be the real antagonists of the game. This is one of hundreds of fantastic theories out there and that's only for the main story of the game, let alone the dozens of insanely symbolic and emotional side quests that all have their fair share of theories. The fact the game can make people think outside the box in these ways shows it has a much more engaging story than OoT, where the story doesn't go anywhere beyond you are an orphaned child destined to be the hero that slays Ganon, rescues Hyrule and saves the princess. It doesn't really stem far beyond that and the there is no real NPC development like in MM. Buuuut this is just my opinion.

Couldn't we all agree that both of them are great Zelda games? The deep storyline of OoT. The dark atmosphere of MM. Awesome soundtrack, memorable characters, replayability and solid gameplay from both. Ocarina is my favorite, but Majora's is in my top 5. My only complain about MM is that there are only 4 dungeons and most things seems to be... out of place, at least for me. You jump in a hole in the beginning and suddenly you are in a parallel world called Termina. But that doesn't change the fact that it is a awesome Zelda game, one that i replay even to this day.

rather than compare these two games and try to decide which is better, I prefer to view them as two perfect companions. I’d love for HD remakes of the two, and a third, _brand new_ game in the same style and spirit to give us a complete trilogy…

Before they started the music part I was like “if MM wins I’m going to be heated” and here I am heated. No way in HELL is the MM soundtrack better than ocarinas. I recognized most of OOT soundtrack before I even played it unlike MM.

I honestly have no idea why Ocarina of Time 3D didn't give the Bunny Hood it's abilities from Majora's Mask. Traversing Hyrule as Young Link is Tedious without it as he is SO SLOW.

Majora's Mask has no Kings, no anoying and kidnaped princess, no Ganondorf (Who always revives for no reason) not being treated like a chosen one (I hate that shit) just link in a strange and Dark world on a mission to stop a evil entity from chrashing the moon and destory the world. Sounds more epic to me.

While many really like the "dark atmosphere" and love the three day thing, I just like MM more. The 3 day mechanic ruins the game for me, the sidequests are scattered and unintuitive, and 3 of the 4 dungeons are forgettable. To be fair, Stone tower is my favorite dungeon in the series, but that can't carry the game. People keep saying MM is the underdog in this debate, but i hardly ever see people argue Oot over MM. I'm cool if you like MM tho great game, but Oot is just better

Majora's Mask is a game that I developed a love and appreciation for over time. At first, it was kinda jarring because I was so used to Ocarina and had beaten it countless times, and the 3 day thing threw me off. But as I got older, I sat down and played it and realized that it's a really unique and ambitious game, and nowadays I think I'd put it above Ocarina on my list. Despite the fact that I've played through Ocarina dozens of times, Majora just left a lasting, unique impression on me that no other game has. And the fact that they reused character models and other assets from Ocarina and made a completely original game out of them in an insanely short development process, without making the game feel like a quick cash grab from the success of Ocarina, is an amazing achievement.

I feel like Ocarina of time had basically all forgettable dungeons. There was the water temple which was memorable because it was tedious and there was the forest temple because it was PHENOMENAL. The child timeline had basically terrible dungeons as well. Majoras mask has four of the best dungeons in the game plus the definitive best mini dungeons in the series

I played MM first and the feeling of how alive the game was. After I got past the timer which always got on my nerves I started to appreciate the game more. Unraveling the mysteries of the sidequests was so rewarding to me. NPCs that just don't stand in one spot all day, that marked me.

The fact that this debate exists shows how legendary (no pun intended) these games are. In my opinion, Ocarina of time is the best Zelda and one of the greatest, if not the greatest video game I have ever played. Ocarina of time’s importance and legacy may be far greater than Majoras mask, but majoras mask is an absolutely phenomenal sequel. A game that is much better than it had any right to be (especially considering it’s development time). Both are amazing and influential. But I do still believe that Ocarina of time is the greatest.

MM was so hard when it came out, I never had the patience to play it as a kid. But having just beaten it about 95%, and then going straight to OoT, I have to give Majoras mask the crown. Ocarina of time just seems like another LttP now, and is very plain (and easy) in comparison with MM.

At first sorry for possible bad English. Ocarina of Time has great and many dungeons, a pretty epic story and solid bosses. All those things including the wonderful music (which in my opinion is as good as in MM) are making me feel that OoT is the better Zelda game. Yeah it could be, that Majora has a wonderful world, but in my eyes it cant match up with OoT´s world. The world of MM simply feels so limited, like there is an actual level system, where Clock Town is the overworld and the 4 regions are the levels with their own bosses at the end. OoT´s map on the other hand feels much more open and like you could go were ever you want to. Including this EPIC theme of Hyrule Field, Majoras linear and depressing world has no chance against OoT`s. Okay, the sidequests in MM are great and they are a pretty good variety if you finaly finished one of the 4 regions. But in my eyes sidequests are not important enough for me to choose the better game. The point of the better gameplay on the other hand goes realy to MM. I dont need to explain more, because you have allready said everything. I played the two games first on the 3ds last year, so im not wearing the glasses of nostalgia. I must say that OoT gave me a better, much more epic an Zelda like feeling while playing it and the story felt much more important and relevant than Majoras did. In my opinion this is the most important point, which a game should have. A good story, which gives you enough motivation to turn it on again. And Majoras Mask simply felt to depressive and dark. Combined with that logic errors when you travel back in time (which items you lose and which not) Majora was simply not as much fun to play as Ocarina of Time. Because of that I have played OoT through within one week, while for MM i needed about 5 months.

Bro Majora's mask just feels different when I you play it. The characters are more likeable and more Alive in there own way, the bosses are very unique. The mini-boss battles are fantastic and the story line is so good. The final battle could be more difficult, but it was satisfying when you defeated him with the fierce deity mask. Don't get me wrong, I love Ocarina of time but Majora's mask is like one of the best games I've ever played.

Majora's Mask for life.

As someone who worshipped Ocarina of Time when it first came out it took me years of denial to finally admit that Majora's Mask was the superior game. Because it is: to begin with, it has real role playing elements, most particularly characters who feel ALIVE (even the dead ones) and there is always this mutual URGENCY which adds so much tension, challenge and excitement... Both gameplay-wise and in regards to your interactions with NPC:s. The game is tighter, harder, grimmer and more adult themed. It is also a lot more REPLAYABLE since the timing aspect varies from playthrough to playthrough and side quests have a much more substantial impact on how you play (what mask you wear to complement your fighting style, when and where to find your bottles, Epona etcetera). Ocarina of Time, however, with its easier difficulty and standard formula, is a much better INTRODUCTION to 3D Zelda adventures. Both games have varied, challenging and ingenious dungeons, good bosses, fantastic music and so on. Yet neither are perfect games - they both have wasted opportunities and too repetitive elements such as what is found in the Water Temple or the overuse of the Elegy of Emptiness. Majora's Mask's adventure takes place more outside of temples than within them and you need to plan your playthrough meticiously thanks to the stringent time restriction. Ocarina of Time is mainly dungeon focused and things like side quests, Epona's rescue and character dynamics feel like afterthoughts.

I knew I wasn’t the only one who thought the Kafei side quest was top notch it kinda felt like post game. It had a sad and happy ending because the ending of the quest had them spend the final seconds before the moon crashed down to you knowing that they will die being officially married. And as soon as you get that mask you’ll reset to the first day like nothing ever happened. But when you beat Skull kid the end credits shows them getting married so nothing to worry about.

I grew up playing ocarina of time. I just now started majoras mask. After only the first temple I think I already like majoras mask better. Just feels more involved. The time limit thing always intimidated me, however after some game time I've come to realy enjoy the looming clock, it adds a lot of tension. Both are amazing games.

I don't know what everyone's beef is with the Water Temple? It's really not that hard: You start with the bottom floor and then work your way up, then you clear the other two floors and if you're then stuck. Well then you go back to the rooms where you couldn't reach something before and reach it... and then you're done.

Imwill never forget walking out onto hyrule field for the first ever time, i never thought that another zelda would beat TOoT, i only played on majors mask 2 years ago, amd i have to say it is probably my fave game ever, the atmosphere and emotions it can stire up in your soul, i used to feel like i wanted to cry playing it

OoT is great, and it's importance in the evolution of Video games cannot be overstated, that said Majora's Mask was a better game because it had a darker tone, it took more risks and it attached you more to the world you were in than OoT, It was different than the typical hero saves the kingdom trope that Zelda was starting to play out. You also got to know the characters of Termina. Oot is a classic, and one of the ten most important games ever made, still though I find Majora's Mask infinitely more enjoyable, and I played it several times, that I cannot say about many Zelda games.

Ocarina was my first Zelda that made me fan for life, I'm am currently playing Majora's on NSO with the N64 Switch controller. It's the only 3D Zelda I'm yet to finish, and I'm loving it, I don't know if I'll feel the same way I felt about Ocarina once I finish it, but it's another masterpiece for sure.

This was a close battle for me as they both bring nostalgia. I remember playing OoT when it was released and immediately was hooked. Beat it countless times. Then came majoras mask and even as a kid, I was 9 or 10 at the time, I could feel the dark tones of the game. They are both good but I think I slightly prefer the darkness to MM. This is 1A and 2A for me. Now after watching this I'm going to load up MM and start a new file :)

While the masks make some nice variation in the gameplay, they also can destroy part of the gameplay (That stonemask for example). Overall the aspects, that were close calls actually are more of a personal opinion and make it hard to be objective. The only truelly undeniable reason, that gives MM the advantage, is, that MM was made with OoT as a base. But if we had to consider the "water-level-haters" as the deciding factor, watertempel is better than great bay temple (but only by the frustration the current can cause)

I'd say OoT got a bit more credit here than it honestly deserves, but that's not to say it's bad. OoT, like other Miyamoto-era Zelda games, focuses on being a definitive fairy tale adventure. There's a very distinct tonal difference between Miyamoto and Aonuma era Zelda, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. I'd say the N64 games were great at capturing exactly what their heads have gone for, though overall I'd say MM is the winner between the two, especially in our current day. Story wise, OoT is definitely solid, and there's not really anything *wrong* with it, but again, it kind of feels like a fairy tale. The story doesn't really come across as very ambitious, there's just a few memorable encounters. MM's story and plot, though not always as upfront, is considerably more ambitious, especially for a video game, and despite that, most would say they made it work. The game world of MM is also more interesting to traverse and explore, with more optional content in denser areas, as well as a wider array of more interesting characters. And as for gameplay, though OoT definitely has several moments of great design, MM is obviously designed with it in mind that the player already has an understanding of how to play a game in a 3D space. As a result, MM more often uses its existence as a 3D game as a lot more than simply aesthetic (and let's be honest, it's not even a problem exclusive to OoT, but so many 3D games hardly require the game to be 3D anyway. Maybe there's some "look up and shoot the eye" puzzles, but that's not a complex use of 3D). OoT's Forest Temple requires a bit of understanding of 3D space to get that Boss Key, but aside from that, you can go through all the twists and turns without understanding how any of the altered sections truly relate to each other. In MM's Stone Tower Temple, however, you need to be constantly aware of how the two versions of the Temple relate to each other. Perhaps there's a chest that you need to keep in mind, so you need to remember which room it's in so you can return and get it. And unlike the Forest Temple in OoT, this happens quite a bit. And as for bosses, let's first not pretend that many Zelda bosses have ever been very good anyway. Even Goht, in how fun it is to chase after him and knock him down, is flawed by how annoying it is when you get knocked over. I think the benefit MM has here over OoT is in the options you have in taking bosses down. Most of OoT's bosses are the simplest of "puzzle bosses," where it essentially tests your ability to press L and use the dungeon item. MM's bosses, though not particularly difficult, allow you to fight your own way. Goht can be defeated without using the Goron Mask. Odolwa can be defeated without the Deku Mask. They're at least combat challenges, not simple puzzles.

No way MM has the better music. I love majoras mask but Oot is absolutely magic.
