Yes... Good stuff. I never saw this add-on system or the game, as Colleco, Tandy, Apple and Commodore techno mutants from Hell the gradually infultrated the Suburbs. It looks awesome though, impressive for the 2600. I assume the simple egg sprites allowed the detailed descending sprites and mother commie to look so kick ass for the 2600!

Except the political situation in the Eastern Bloc was really complex. Tetris originated in the USSR, but it found its way outside the Eastern Bloc due to Hungary being a crack in the iron curtain. Many Eastern Bloc inventions like the Rubik's Cube were introduced to Western Bloc audiences through Hungary. Also, Tetris did find its way on the Game Boy after heated court cases and discussions in both the Soviet government offices and US courts.

That game was called "Green Beret" in the rest of the world - including Japan, its country of origin - so that unsubtle title was purely for the benefit of the American audience. Pretty sure that actually makes it worse, because it means someone made the deliberate choice to rebrand it that way for increased US "appeal."

@@blatherskite3009 Isn't than normally the story for odd names through localization? Just look at the mess that is the Street Fighter 2 boss characters. M. Bison should be Vega, Vega should be Balrog, Balrog should be M. Bison(a play on Mike Tyson). Unfortunately, all the changed names stuck in the West despite the fact that the correct names from Japan make far more sense.

Speaking of Atari Classics, do you have any interest in Atari's new console, the Atari VCS? Most of us assumed it was just a scam but it turned out it is actually real and some have already gotten theirs (with unsurprisingly mixed reactions).
@FridayNightArcade
@FridayNightArcade 3 жыл бұрын
I don't own any of the "classic" mini consoles myself, but I understand why they exist. They're just kinda geared toward the casual person who wants to play a few of the older games without the hassle of figuring out how to hook up original hardware to a modern TV. Seems like they always have emulation issues or audio issues though. And not being able to add games to them without jailbreaking is kinda dumb, to me at least. Seems like it would be a no brainer to have some sort of virtual store where you can download more games for $1.99 or something, but I'm sure there are all sorts of licensing issues. If I had to sum up my take on those types of consoles in one word, I'd probably call them "fine." Most casual folks would probably really enjoy something like that and for them it would be fine - maybe something for their kids to play with - whatever, and that's totally cool. My buddy has an NES Classic and his kid loves it. That's great! If it gets people playing old games who otherwise wouldn't because of the technical challenges of hooking up old hardware, cleaning old games and getting it running, that's awesome. If you're a bit more serious about it though and really wanting to dig into gaming history with smooth emulation but with the ease of hooking up to a modern television, look into the MiSTer project: misteraddons.com/
@Carnelust
@Carnelust 3 жыл бұрын
The VCS is actually a full modern console that runs other games too, so it has old Atari games available but they're releasing new stuff for it too like other consoles. I don't think it will leave a big mark since the big sell is it comes with an old one-button joystick and runs classics games but people probably won't pay premium to play Asteroids with a retro controller. You obviously have to use a modern controller to play anything but Atari games so even though it runs most modern games it's just a console that says Atari on it.
@FridayNightArcade
@FridayNightArcade 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the Atari VCS seems to have an identity crisis. Are people really going to pay $400 just to play really old Atari games that generally don't hold one's attention more than 5-10 minutes? I think they would have just been better off going the cheaper route like the NES Classic and others with a more bare bones setup. Like I'm not sure who this product is aimed at. Is it a PC? Is it a retro emulator? Is it a modern game console? My guess is it won't be particularly good at any of those things. But I could be totally wrong lol.

@@FridayNightArcade ...FYI...the new Classic ATARI Joystick has a top fire button & a secondary trigger button...also a recent new game in ATARI’s storefront “Danger Scavenger” utilizes the other “back” & “menu” buttons for the game. Additionally...the joystick rotates...is a spinner controller which is awesome for so many games...the aforementioned “Danger Scavenger”...obviously Tempest...and the game I am currently spending much time on...Major Havoc.
@Carnelust
@Carnelust 3 жыл бұрын
No, I think you're right. Online you see so many people going "should I play this on my PS4 Pro or the PS5 or the new X- Box or should I play it on my high-end gaming PC. I guess I should just buy it for all of them" and I'm sitting here going "I don't think I have enough cash to throw around to buy a PS4 used even." $400 is a lot for an Atari box with a mid-range PC built in, at least it is for me. I have to admit the retro joystick is really dang cool though...

Used to have and love this one along with Phaser Patrol, then got a few more down the road. Mind Master was a classic but I was less impressed with Fireball (Breakout clone) and Suicide Mission (Asteroids clone) The one which should really get reviewed is one of the more obscure ones, which I believe is called Survival Island. It starts with you as a castaway floating in the ocean before progressing to several other very different game modes. I’ve only played that one in an emulator but it was one of the most ambitious Atari games I can remember.

The Federation is Not exactly "communist". Just post scarcity society. One still earns a wage that one can use, it shows signs of being a meritocracy within Federation ranks, the state is not "all", and one still has ownership rights as well as a means of being the means of production sepeaate from the state.. It's "pre-communism light with little worries about logistics" at best. That is if Communism was not a concept that always results in a brutal dictatorship which always lowers standards of living. *Even then the Federation is a bit of a failed concept if well known members of it like Commander Riker still openly go to people like Quark to get away from that system if even for a brief period...* Just saying.
@JanetStarChild
@JanetStarChild 3 жыл бұрын
@@reignick1133 "Post-scarcity" has no baring on definition. The Federation is still by, textbook definition, a communist utopia. It may have a "president" and a council, but there doesn't seem to be a government; and most importantly, there's no privatization of resources. You need to get your head out of the Cold War in regards to what you _think_ communism actually is. "Always results in dictatorship" is such an asinine statement, especially considering recent events with the US and MAGA cultists trying to turn the nation into a fascist dictatorship; and these are people that are very pro-capitalism and worship the "almighty dollar". If this viral pandemic has shown us anything, is that communism can work in this day and age. Hell, the five wealthiest people on the planet could feed, clothe and shelter everyone if such riches were distributed evenly.

This game's title is clearly intended to be humorous, but there were many other games that tapped into Cold War saber-rattling with a straight face, like Rush'N Attack, Raid Over Moscow, etc. Which makes me wonder: was that just an American thing, or did the Russians do the same, developing America-bashing games like Capitalist Mutants from Outer Space, Yank'Ee Attack, Raid Over Washington D.C., etc.? I'm guessing it's probably the former, but maybe someone who lived through the Cold War on the other side can enlighten me?

Any game that's about killing commies is alright in my book. A sequel to this game should be made that takes place in the 1980's. The games main character should be Ronald Reagan with an assortment of firearms. Every time he kills a space commie he needs to say one of his famous quotes like "well" and "Gorbachev, tear down that wall!" Oh and he needs to have a space Trans-Am like the Heavy Metal film. I would play this game! I love this channel! Addendum- Wasn't there another super charger add on for the 2600? I think there was and it played carts instead of the cassettes.
