Here I break down the structure of an episode all about breaking down structure. If that's too meta for you than clearly you're not a fan of community.

this episode has my favorite joke in the whole show - the first dialogue is about whether or not Troy and Abed's apartment is 303 or 304. The episode is season 3 episode 4, commonly written as 304. it's implied that it takes place before the previous episode because in that one Pierce mentions that the Seven are the only people he's told the Eartha Kitt story, and this is the episode where he tells them. It's also implied in the ending that the Jeff Goes timeline is the one we follow for the rest of the show, EXCEPT it's the only timeline where Pierce DOESN'T tell the Eartha Kitt story.

I also think the message of the episode is that although Jeff thinks throughout the whole show that his friends are a "burden" to him, he's the one who needs them and they can function just fine without him. And all that is shown and accepted by Jeff in the final season.

While we're here: guys, is season 6 good? I watched until episode 4 (the dog degree episode), and I don't know, I didn't really laugh and feel. Something seems broken. Is it just the first few episodes that are weirdly paced or something?
@filmisworthless32327 жыл бұрын
andiran23 I personally liked season 6 more than season 5. Both of them have a few episodes that aren't too good though. Season 6 wraps up pretty nicely though. So check it out

Season six is the only season I've never re-watched. Partly because I don't own it on DVD, probably, but also because as you said, it felt a bit off. I think Yahoo may have had something to do with that, but I wouldn't put all the blame there. It was probably a lot of factors, not the least of which was the absence of the Troy and Abed dynamic, which was one of my favorite aspects of the show. I also found that I missed Pierce, surprisingly.

Honestly, the line that Jeff says when he returns in his timeline, something along the lines of 'see what happens when I leave you guys alone?', is one of my favourites in the entire series.

Remedial Chaos Theory is one of my favorite episodes of tv ever. It's one of my favorite things put to film. Though I'd probably argue that Troy is the heart of the show. Troy leaving creates the darkest timeline. And Donald Glover not being in the last two seasons highlights how important he was to the group.
@magentasound_7 жыл бұрын
yh I'd agree, I feel like his exit was the beginning of the drifting apart of the group that it felt the final episiode of season 6 (and jeff) was aknowledging and accepting at the end of the show

I started watching it (IIRC) because of Mike Rugnetta’s recommendation and for the autistic representation in Abed. I ended up loving it… also chiefly for the autistic representation in Abed. Abed is _incredible._ But also the rest of the show, the writing and style - especially of high concept, outlandish-yet-incisive episodes like this one - which comprise some of my favourite pieces of television ever.

Great video! Though I'm surprised you didn't go into the fact that the timeline with the most positive results happens due to Jeff's absence - a character who frequently positions himself as the (often controlling) moral leader of the group
@zarbixii7 жыл бұрын
But they do need him to keep the group in check. When he was kicked out of the group in the chicken episode, they became selfish and spoiled because Abed was too soft on them. Jeff is a good leader, though not necessarily a good person. But then again, who really is?
@inviktus19836 жыл бұрын
And when Troy leaves, Pierce gets shot, Jeff loses an arm, the whole places gets set on fire.. One could liken this to the series after Troy leaves.. Chevy Chase leaves the show, Jeff becomes a teacher losing some of what made his character great..
@waterdragondelta6 жыл бұрын
So kind of... If Troy's not around, catastrophe ensues. If Abed's not around, the soul of the group erodes (arguably the ACTUAL darkest timeline, imo...) But in the "best" timeline a main character (Abed, of course) becomes conscious of circumstance and in that awareness, things progress more gently and kindly..? I like that. I miss Community.
Having just come off the back of watching this episode my first thought was to find a nice video essay about it, and I wasn't disappointed. Great editing and analysis, kudos!

Great video essay, love Community. Only thing I’d say is that the show didn’t coin the term “bottle episode,” that’s been a tv term/trope for a long time, which is why Abed kept saying it during that season 2 bottle episode.

@absolutelymental28813 жыл бұрын
I don’t remember which timeline is the one that actually happened, but I feel like this entire episode is played from abeds perspective, and what happens in each timeline represents his feeling about that member of the group. When Troy leaves, the person who abed is closest to out of the group, everything falls into chaos and is the darkest timeline. When Jeff leaves, the group has the most fun because abed feels as if Jeff’s self consciousness brings the whole group down, and so forth.
@JCPatrick4 жыл бұрын
I love “Community” and this episode was amazing. I just watched this the other day too and was thinking how brilliant it is. The series finale made me really sad. I felt depressed for a while. Especially when Jeff & Annie were talking & he said that he wishes he was in his 20’s where the world was shiny & bright with all of these new possibilities. Such a harsh reality for someone like Jeff who had to start over and made close friendships with younger ppl. Then Annie told him to kiss her or he’ll regret it for the rest of his life, which is such a bittersweet heart ripping moment (for me). This is def in my top fav shows of all time bc I can watch it over and over again & still learn something new. ❤️❤️❤️ #communityforever

I feel that this episode is more about Jeff's selfishness vs selflessness and how it affects the group. Initially Jeff is meant to get the pizza but changes the rules by using the dice so that logically it is impossible for him to get the pizza, it's pretty damn selfish. Jeff is the leader of the group and makes sacrifices all throughout the show in order to keep the group together as he's the glue that holds them together so when he's selfish this destabilises the group because he's thinking about himself rather than the other members. At the end, Abed calls out Jeff's bullshit and the group makes him get the pizza which causes him to selflessly get the pizza. It shows that no matter how significant the matter is, his actions has the biggest impact on the group.
