“I love the slower pace,” says Judy Ward, owner of Thompson’s Store and Ward’s Grill. “I love the community that's here. And the friendliness, and the... Hey Tim! It's just a wonderful, peaceful place.
“We have a good mixture. We really do. We have a lot of retirees, of course. Our elementary school here is A plus, and that has brought a lot of the younger people to come because they want the best education for their families, and that has been wonderful for us too.
“Main Street is not very big. It's like one long walk. You can walk from one end to the other. We have of course, my store, which is the oldest grocery store in North Carolina. And then we have M.A. Pace's, and they're more of a older general store. The restaurants here are fantastic. A lot of people love to come to the Purple Onion, and Saluda Grade; that's why Saluda's here, is because of the railroad.
“There's a lot of different attractions around here. There's Pearson Falls, there's all the different trails around here to go hiking. It's just beautiful out there. One thing great about being in Saluda-you're close to so many other big towns. You can go to Spartanburg, you can go to Greenville, you can go to Hendersonville, Asheville. So, if you wanna go out and go to some bigger places, you're close enough to it you can go, but Saluda's just nice to come home to. And you just slow down and you can enjoy life, and just experience the good of it.”

Saluda is famous for sitting at the top of the Norfolk Southern Railway’s Saluda Grade, the steepest mainline standard gauge railroad line in the country. The town’s train depot now houses a museum.
