This video shows the camp toilet I use when I'm camping in my SUV. I couldn't find one that was compact enough for my liking, so I designed one and made it out of a plastic toilet seat that I got from Amazon (affiliate link: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...) and some 1-inch PVC.
This is a great toilet for use when car camping, SUV RVing, vandwelling, living in a car, etc. Learn how to make your own camp toilet!

Great design! To stabilize your legs, unfold the legs and place the toilet in business position, then drill a hole through the portion where the elbow connects to the tee base and stick a pin through both sides to eliminate play. This will allow you to secure your toilet legs without losing its folding ability. It may be helpful to also anchor the pins to the base using a chain or string. Happy camping everyone.

Lol, I just took an older lawn chair I had and cut the plastic straps outta seat, than went and got a cheap durable plastic toilet seat and I took the lid off it and attached seat to seat frame... you'll need some imagination for this. Without the lid on it it the chair has no problem folding up like normal. I take a small shovel with me when I camp and pull a scoop out and place chair over it and put it back when I'm done lol....a bag would also work....I truly have a throne! Caught my 13 yr old son with his elbows on armrests using that dam phone lol

i made one from your description. I prefer the original to the suggest mod version - I added end caps to the 3 open leg ends, for two reasons. Firstly, coming from Australia with a plethora of deadly creepy/crawlies, we try not to have spaces for them to reside. Secondly, the caps will not allow you to fill the legs with soil which can make you SUV RV crappy in no time.

Brilliant and hilarious :) this is just the issue I've been working on. Bought a Reliance 3-legged toilet, like the seat and lid a lot- much along these lines, but still 5" thick *if* you can get the legs to fold down after use (they click into place and I always have one that refuses to retract after use!)

When in the open position I would drill holes through the fitting and pipe and insert pins. That would keep it from folding up.

@markendicott1446

So, I built one both ways, legs going different ways. Either way it was very unstable. Any lateral movement while actually sitting on it caused the legs to start folding in or out. Once that starts, its all over but the collapsing. I modified it totally and got a working design, but as shown it doesn’t.
@SUVRVing
@SUVRVing 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry it didn't work for you. I don't use this design anymore, but I used it a bunch and it worked fine.

Very cool! Maybe drilling some holes through the PVC joints and using some large cotter pins would help with preventing a possible collapse in either direction? Just a thought...not sure if drilling the PVC might weaken it too much...but regardless, great idea!
@SUVRVing

Hmm, interesting idea with the cotter pins. I think the schedule 40 PVC is strong enough that that would work. Thanks!

Well, I think it's for S - -T! BUTT in a PINCH; I reckon it would handle a LOAD. Sorry, just couldn't help myself. With a couple of extra PVC adapters you could probably figure out a swing up paper holder. Also, for extended use the kitty litter, and I'm not talking about using a ton of it, will keep smell to a minimum and not be necessary to empty it each time or even daily. I have practiced the 'use and cover' method with small helpings of: sand, cedar shavings, loose dirt, etc. for as long as a week (2 people and mostly peeing elsewhere), with white, tall kitchen bags, then a heavier black bag. (not the super heavy contractor's type). As I mentioned above, never had any smell problem nor too much weight for the plastic bags plus the eco-friendly savings of using fewer petro-chem products. I DOO like the idea though.

Yeah, you could definitely add a TP holder if you were so inclined, but that's not something I think is essential. I generally try to use the toilet at gas stations or fast food restaurants whenever possible, so I rarely use the portable toilet for more than a couple of times in a row. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Maybe Later ...where do you guys dispose of the bags? thanks
@raysills
@raysills 7 жыл бұрын
You'd have to find a public location where there are trash receptacles. My local park has free baggies for dog-walkers to clean up after their pets, and the trash barrels are often filled 50% or more with doggie bags. So, adding a "human" bag would be OK. Or using trash barrels outside a big store (where you are shopping anyway) is another disposal location.

Can it be adapted to use inside the suv? I'm looking to make something sturdy for the back seat of mine.
@SUVRVing
@SUVRVing 7 жыл бұрын
If you've got the space inside your vehicle, I don't see why it wouldn't work. You'd just have to make the legs quite short if you're going to use it on top of a seat. You could also stick it on the floor of the SUV behind the front seats and in front of the back seats, which I think would probably be the better option.

How about a good old bed pan lined with garbage bags? Used that for trips with my kids in an emergency. Worked in a pinch. We threw in kitty litter to absorb whatever then threw waste away after each use. Just sat it on the seat when needed and kept it in the trunk (bags, toilet paper, wipes, and small bag of kitty litter fit inside) when not.

I'd be tempted to shorten the legs and just dig a 6 inch hole. Some areas (like desert) you'd need to carry out TP but that's way easier than all those smelly bags. Logs work nicely but they aren't ubiquitous. If someone made a portable log I'd buy it. :)

@markendicott1446

It just doesn’t hold you up. With full body weight on it, ANY shifting causes the legs to start folding. Once that starts you’d better get off as the next movement will be to the ground onto your pile. If the legs were glued this wouldn’t happen, but that kinda defeats the purpose of being able to fold down.
