hey Company Man! I've got a cool Target fact for you. Target was the first company ever to adopt a system that allowed you to order your prescriptions and refills over the phone with an automated service. Cooler still, my uncle was the inventor of the phone system, and was the original automated phone voice for target for YEARS before it was switched to a robotic female system. Has anyone ever called target back in the day and remember hearing a mans voice on the system? thats uncle DOUG!

Target does a good job of making shopping “fun.” You get your necessities like laundry detergent, toilet paper, healthy food, etc, then to reward yourself you get a Starbucks and browse the clothes or shoes for something fashionable but not too expensive. The employees also don’t look dead in the eyes.

When I'm in a Target I often think about how Kmart, Sears, etc. utterly failed due to the "retail apocalypse" while Target is thriving. And it's because of everything you mentioned here. Most importantly it's pleasant to shop there. I'm not trying to get what I need and get out. I relax a little. And that leads to thoughts of "oh, what else do I need?" Interior design of a store 100% maximizes profits.

Both Kmart and Sears failed to adapt to the times, which pretty much sums up why they ultimately went bankrupt. I do agree with you that shopping at Target is much more relaxing than shopping at other retail outlets. That being said I think it comes down to Target having your basic essentials in a lot of categories that saves people time from having to commute from one store to another. That itself shouldn't be overlooked either.

As a Target team member something I believe has helped with Target's success is a guest not customer strategy. Team members at Target are expected to help our visitors find what's best for them and not what's most expensive, even if it's giving people advice that results in loss of sale. Team members are encouraged for better service as well as good guest feedback is rewarded but no rewards are given for pushing more sales. It leads to environments where guests feel welcome to look and ask questions but not pressured to buy leading to more regular visits.

It depends on the store area's management of course, but I ran into people who were treated very well when they had medical issues (salary) and not so well (wage earners.) Just before I left I got injured and was treated much better than I would have been in the recent past when good workers who had injuries that would have required a couple of months rehab and medical bills were... encouraged to become guests, shall we say? Obamacare made this 'Go Away Now That You Are Not In Your Prime Anymore' mentality way worse. Since 2020 the shortage of workers willing to work for 'reality' minimum wage, while also carrying a variety of work area tasks has helped Target Corporation's outlook. They are more keen on keeping their current employees.

Sorry to hear about your sister. There is a guy named Robert Morse N.D. who has helped people heal from cancer with a fruit-based diet and herbs and moving the lymphatic system (the body’s sewer). Tumors, I believe, are toxic lymph clots but when you get the lymph moving with an alkaline diet and achieving proper elimination (kidney filtration of lymphatic wastes is a big one that gets overlooked), people have been able to heal. I caution highly against traditional cancer treatments which I believe ultimately add to the cause (toxicity) and make it worse.

I knew something was up for the better (for once) when they allowed the employees a few minutes before opening to shop for their essentials. Otherwise we were kept so busy stocking and cleaning we would have had no time for our own family and personal needs. Note before this it was things like ObamaCare taking away medical insurance and decent hours and things generally going downhill due to Amazon being more of a cutthroat than Wally World was. Local management (like all things where personalities are involved) was hit and miss. Sometimes you got a really great manager and sometimes you got the sadist from hell. Either way they changed every few months to a couple of years anyway. I miss some of my coworkers though. There were some good times.

The 2 most likely reasons (based on Jake Williams / BSF doc) are that the locations they took (mostly from Zellers and Kmart before them) were NOT APPROPIATE (that explains why a lot of them are still vacant) and that Target didn't understood the way the distribution schemes in Canada differ from those in The States (the rules tend to protect more Canadian-owned businesses than US ones do), which made them stash THE WRONG PRODUCTS at THE WRONG PRICE.

The reason was kind of funny, publicly they will say that it stretched them too thin logistically and I remember being angry when they cut my hours while opening in Canada as I worked at one at the time. Those who haven't worked at one may not be aware that the word union is a four letter word within the confines of those stores. Well, the employees at their Canadian stores were preparing to organize and rather than deal with that they pulled out of Canada. Hours never recovered after that and they were pissed when I got a second job. I never shop there after my experience working there.

The Kmart in my hometown was exactly the same from the time I was a single digit child, up until my mid-twenties. If they hadn't gone out of business, I'm sure that store would have looked exactly the same, to this day. Target has a policy of remodeling their stores approximately every 10 years, in an effort to stay contemporary. I've never witnessed another company in my life that stays as fresh and modern as Target does, and it's one of my most appreciated things about them.

Target does a good job of keeping an adequate amount of employees on the registers, keeping their shelves stocked, and having knowledgeable employees. I actually think the slightly higher prices work in their favor. Since people know that (even though they're still reasonable), it cuts out a lot of the "ME FIRST!" Keeping shelves stocked was always a battle especially in departments that generated a lot of package trash while only having one baler and trash compactor. A Godsend was the internet. Was so much faster to be able to search for an item once tech came in. Knowing your own stuff was not too bad, but trying to figure out where some obscure new item housed in a department far away? That got rough! 😏

I’ve worked for both Target and Sam’s Club and the experience is way different. Target wants knowledgeable, helpful employees and treats employees a lot better in my experience. I see the higher pay as an investment in team members as people are more likely to stay if they are being paid more. Target is also way ahead of Walmart in online pick up. The store I work at very much emphasizes pick up orders.

I tried recently Walmart curb side pickup, and it did not go well. My order wasn’t ready, and I was with someone who wanted to go in. It wasn’t clear where I could go for assistance, and when I found some corner labeled online orders, no one was there and lights were off. When I walked up, lights came on because of motion. I stood around waiting for someone, nothing. I then walked over to an employee that was walking by, and they told me they didn’t know the system. So I just went to the aisles and got the same items I ordered, then cancelled my original online order on the app.

I've been going to Target since I was a kid around the late 2000s. I think the best part about Target is its layout and colors that seem to compliment said layouts. Another thing that I like about Target is the fact that they usually have a really good presentation of the items that they sell (clothes, appliances, electronics, toys, etc.) Just going to Target as an experience is something that the customers (including myself) don't take for granted.

Target operates one of THE most aggressive anti-shoplifting efforts of any retailer. And in very subtle ways: like, they identify and maintain records on frequent shoplifters but do not prosecute immediately so as to track greater interaction with organized crime. Target security also interfaces with law enforcement on an unprecedented level, and often has better/more expensive tech than local cops. There is a HUGE story to be explored in how Target shapes local communities (for better or worse) through law enforcement.

I've always preferred Target over Walmart or even Kmart. The Target stores are usually kept up better both inside and outside. The people there, both employees and customers, tend to be more friendly. And frankly I feel safer going to a Target than many Walmarts. In the metro area I live in we have 4 Walmarts and 2 Targets. I've never heard of or seen any large fights or other violent incidents happening at either of the Target locations, even going back a couple of decades. However, all of the Walmarts have had major incidents of violence happen at them in the past couple of years including a woman who was shot and killed in the parking lot in 1 the 4 area Walmarts in 2020. It is not at all unusual to see multiple police vehicles in front of any of the Walmarts, especially on the weekends or near holidays. I've only ever seen fire trucks or EMS at a Target in our area due to medical emergencies.

Kmart is a dump--it's dirty messy, bare bones and doesn't look like it's been renovated since the 90s. Sure, Target's neon squiggles were very 90s too, but at least it was tasteful and had a nice nostalgic vibe. I don't mind Walmart that much, but of the three Target is definitely my favorite too.

Whenever I shop at Target, I definitely feel like they’re a slight cut above the rest in terms of quality-cleanliness of the store is a bit better, the shopping carts are better, the shelves are a bit better organized, etc. Speaking of the shopping cars, you don’t often see a company completely change its shopping cart design! Maybe it’s a design that’s already been changed for a while, but I only noticed it recently (plus, pandemic likely kept me indoors for a year or two) and I really love the rounded look! It’s very smooth and the way the seat folds definitely feels superior! And did I mention it was clean? I feel like other supermarkets (cough, Walmart, cough) I’ve seen and used the same shopping carts for years-broken wheels, dirty iron bars, hand grips loose, etc. Definitely can see how they’re doing so well! I never have a bad experience there!

The employees can get attached to them (and the vendor relationships with those products) so they had a little "funeral" for the items. It sounded playful and fun, to honor the dramatic shift they were going through. I also remember learning some stories about the Targets that share buildings with others (like a mega Strip Malls) and how property owners can try to finesse fraud into their numbers, hoping Target won't notice. They pay hourly people every week which is also really helpful when you aren't making much to begin with.

I'm surprised you didn't mention their famous failure entry into and sudden pull-out from the Canadian market between 2013 and 2015. Within a span of 2 years they opened 133 locations in Canada but had many issues with inventory, higher prices compared to their American stores, and an overall disappointing reception from Canadian shoppers. Maybe it could be its own video idea. You can find lots of material on it from Canadian news media.

I love Target. I always had such a positive experience going to one. I wish my town had one and not a Walmart. Love Target, great video! As a relatively recent transplant to Texas (within the past 5 years), I really think it would be interesting if you did an episode on H-E-B. If you're not from Texas, it's likely you've never seen or heard of this, but they're an absolute juggernaut when it comes to North American food/grocery retail. What's really striking to me about them is their company culture. From sales associates and cashiers (called "Partners") or upper corporate management, there seems to be a deep fondness that employees have, and I think it has a lot to do with their success. From what I've been told by friends I've met who work for HEB, the company history is super interesting as they've spread throughout the state and begun to directly compete with (and in many cases, surpass) other places like Walmart, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, etc. It's a bit more niche since they're really only in one state in the US...but I really think it'd make for an interesting video.

Watching this very video has brought back plenty of memories as I was once a Target employee and it is one of the early jobs I have held while in my early adulthood. I'm from New Jersey and am grateful to have held a seasonal position from them during the 2010-11 holiday. It is right across Menlo Park Mall and my twin brother and I went with our foster mother there many times growing up in the late 90's-early 2000's including Nordstrom to go clothes shopping. These customer service jobs do not come very often for someone with limited experience like me, but Target is where I first got to experience working behind the cash register and also using the telephone though not very often. I didn't get the seasonal position the following holiday season and I really did want to be a permanent employee at that Target like the previous year, but they did send me a letter two years later inviting me to reapply for the 2013-14 hoilday season. I unfortunately had other ideas though I realize today how much I should appreciate Target than I may have in the past. While I am going to start a new customer service position this Monday (12/6/2021), I know despite any possible future setbacks it will be a steppingstone to something much greater!

I've been shopping at Target for years, and while I prefer Aldi because their products are cheaper, I agree that Target's quality makes up for their slightly higher prices relative to Wal-Mart. I have a bunch of Goodfellow shirts ($6 a piece), and when I go there to buy food Aldi doesn't have, the 5 percent discount from using the Red Card, plus the discounts on their app, helps to make up for the higher prices. The 5 cent discount per reusable bag is a nice touch as well.

It would’ve been cool if you mentioned their gift card promotion strategy. Many times, if you buy select items or categories of items you’ll qualify for a gift card of $5, $10, even $20. Critically, they don’t activate until after the sale is completed so 9 times out of 10 they’re used on a repeat visit. Much better than a flat dollar amount off since it facilitates repeat shopping

Target’s success and reputation really comes down to their history as a department store (Dayton’s) rather than as a discounter/five and dime like Walton’s/Walmart and Kresge/Kmart. Their typical shopper has discriminating tastes but is also price sensitive. It’s a tightrope trying to balance, but Target has done a great job with that.

One big area Target innovated compared to Walmart recently was suburban and urban expansion. Target developed their City Target format (though they dropped the City branding now) to move into large urban centers that were unversed by them or Walmart previously. In the city I live in that absolutely had an impact on where I shopped as I could make a short trip to the downtown City target to get more general goods than the grocery store has (along with groceries that they had priced below Safeway). Outside of that the only options would have been online or to drive out to a Target or Walmart in the suburbs

I really like target. I've always liked the cleanliness and seemingly happy employees. Companies like that always deserve my dollar more than Walmart or something. I also see it as a perfect "mom" store... Need school clothes? Target. Need school supplies? Target. Need shampoo while you're there? No problem. Sure Walmart has all that stuff but target feels more "small business" if that makes any sense. Kinda like a family owned store, whereas Walmart feels super corportized. It reminds me of JC Penney with a grocery store inside, along with electronics lol. I only say this because my mom loves target 😂 she never goes to Walmart.
