Another interesting thing about smooth muscle is that different smooth muscle cells may react differently to the same neurotransmitter or hormone. Example: In the lungs smooth muscle cells relax in response to epinephrine while smooth muscle in many blood vessels contract in response to the same hormone. This is because smooth muscle cells can express different receptors for the same hormone (for more look up alpha and beta adrenergic receptors). I hope this helps you!

When it comes to smooth muscle things work a bit differently. Smooth muscle also contracts when it is stretched, so smooth muscle doesn't completely shut down even if it has completely lost innervation.

Control of smooth muscle is complicated :) Smooth muscle cells can react to mechanical changes (they tend to contract when stretched due to mechanically activated channels), by hormones (smooth muscle cells wrapped around bronchi relax in response to epinephrine so that bronchi dilate), other smooth muscle cells contract in response to direct contact with other cells (smooth muscle cells in the gut contract when autorhythmic cells undergo depolarization-- helps create waves of contraction).

Epithelial tissues usually have more extracellular matrix than the other tissues. There is more, but that should get you started :) You might take a look at the Tissues(Biology) page on wikipedia too.

Thank you, I have a lab quiz tomorrow. I have been studying, but since it is summer we are moving at a really fast pace and it helps to hear it from another point of view. The smooth muscle description clicked in my head when you said that it's smooth and there was no striation. When it was described to me as non striated, it didn't click in my brain for some reason. Anyways I appreciate the help. Keep posting...

You are an excellent professor. I view your lectures before reading a chapter (this way I get more out of reading). There was one question I need for you to clarify please: which smooth muscles require innervation? Can you list some examples of that as well?

Take a look at "muscle anatomy at the molecular level." Basically the striations in muscle and in collagen are due to repeating arrangements of molecules. In skeletal and cardiac muscle it is the arrangement of actin and myosin within the sarcomeres of myofibrils. This will make sense to you when you learn the molecular structure of the sarcomere. In collagen the striations are much smaller-- you can't really see them with a light microscope (requires electron microscopy I think).

hi, great vid doctor, and the inervation part was especially interesting. when a lizard's tail breaks off is the wiggling because of innervation or just regular nerve msgs that had passed through & are manifesting ?
@renhartung
@renhartung 4 жыл бұрын
I don't really know for sure, but my best guess is that when the nerves to the tail are severed or ripped apart they end up sending abnormal random signals that activate the muscles in the tail.

Why after animal is dead some skeletal muscles are still contacting. (have seen that is the abattoir. )
@renhartung
@renhartung 4 жыл бұрын
While the animal is dead many of their cells are still alive. Muscle cells can stay alive for hours after brain death and are capable of contraction during that time. Right after death there can also still be some nerve activity (reflexes and such) that cause contractions.

In a comma all conscious control of muscles stop, but autonomic control is usually still there. So no, skeletal muscle and smooth muscle does not shut down. Even in a deep coma the nervous system is still functioning to control autonomic functions (like moving food along the digestive tract). Skeletal muscle reflexes are also still functioning. The only time skeletal muscles are shut down completely is when the part of the nervous system that was innervating them stops.

Here is a start. Epithelial tissues create membranes (like the skin and mucous membranes) and glands, while muscle tissue creates movement, nervous tissue sends and receives signals and performs integration (data processing), connective tissues fill spaces, store energy, support the body, and circulate nutrients. Nervous and muscle tissues are irritable tissues, they change their membrane charge quickly in response to stimulation.

sir,if both skeletol and cardiac muscle are striated then why on saying striated muscle we automatically assume it to be skeletol not cardiac

@@masoncampbelll -- Don't over think it--- go simple. Yes, they are both striated... Good job. What is one other thing they have in common? Are there any other aspects of structure or function that they have in common?

@renhartung

There are actually 8 muscles in the tongue and some of them originate from the hyoid bone. If you think of the tongue as one big muscle it has an origin at the hyoid and its insertion is into the mucos membranes of the tongue... So, as a skeletal muscle the tongue is outside of the normal definition of a skeletal muscle--- it is a bit strange in that way.
