that button doesn't extend the distance at which you can record; it messes around with the frequency response to make the mic sound different.

Blue spark has more body than rode. I've used these 2 mics before. NT1A uplifts around 4k to 10k thats why they sound good but it can be harsh in some singers with high tonal dynamics.

1) a cardioid pattern is a pick up pattern/ polar pattern which is basically an indication of how sensitive the mic is from the center of the diaphragm. Cardioid is the most common pattern in microphones as it is easier to achieve. Other patterns include omni, bi directional, and there are other patterns which are derivatives of the cardioid such as hyper cardioid and super cardioid. 2) there are basically 3 types of microphones: dynamic (cheap, robust, great off axis rejection, the least detailed of the 3 types. does not require any external power to work. commonly found in live applications i.e concerts), condenser or capacitor (expensive, relatively fragile depending on the circuitry and build, versatile in application, very sensitive and is the more detailed of the 3 types. requires external power i.e phantom power to work. commonly found in recording venues) and ribbon (somewhere in between dynamic and condenser in terms of price, sound and price. the most fragile of the 3. common pick up pattern is figure 8 or bi directional. must never be used with phantom power as the electricity will destroy the diaphragm. 3) the nt1-a is very well known as the microphone with the lowest noise even when compared to top of the line mics which costs 2-4 times more then the rode. I find the impedance relatively irrelevant as most modern pre amps are more then capable of amplifying the signal, unless ur using the cheapest dac or audio interface then you prolly wont have much headroom to work with. 4) stop bloody twitching dammit. i feel so disturbed and annoyed for some reason.

@cypherf0x
@cypherf0x 9 жыл бұрын
Each mic is different and has a certain sweet spot. You really need to test in each mic's sweet spot and not just equal distances to get the best out of each microphone. The NT1-A is about 6" so sitting back as you were from each mic and talking isn't getting the best results out of the mic. Also on your video you need more light so you can close down the aperture and get more depth of field to get yourself in focus as well. Yes, there are times you want it shallow but for your static shot you should be in sharp focus with the mics. It's forgivable when you focus in on a specific mic for emphasis but you shouldn't be out of focus in the wide shot.

@gcastroism 7 жыл бұрын
i think on blue you got too close to it and with nt1a about 1 inch further. This would explain why the blue has lower tones. I would redo the test, and this time put your back against the wall and measure 6" inches, for both. (your head can't go past the wall so it will be exact distance.

Both mics are great. IMO there is no "better",or "worse". I have both: Rode and Spark. It depends- what these mics will used on: vocals,instruments,and so on.. Even voice type and timbre is important,and even song style is important. And after all,- recording chain and postprocessing changes a lot. So,all i can say- both mics are great,and thank You for great review!

When I pluggen everything in, the alesis core to my computer, the mic to the alesis core. I don't get any sound, it is just like the microphone does not work? But it is new so it can not be defect. Maybe the Alesis core 1 does not work with the Rode mic I am using? Any suggestions someone????

Usually to supply phantom power, there has to be a power source more than just usb, so like a wall plug. I'm not very familiar with the Alesis Core 1, but I don't think it has the ability to supply phantom power. I know the Core 2 does. I could be wrong though. The Core 2 has a switch on the back that says 48v. Hope that helps

The button on the back for the Spark does *NOT* adjust the "distance at which you can record" nor does it "attenuate background noise*. The button on the back attenuates low frequencies. This helps to reduce what is known as "proximity effect" that condenser mics tend to have, as well as eliminating low rumbles in the signal, like AC units or vehicles passing outside. Please understand what it is that you're making a video on before you make the video. I hope that you've educated yourself further on this in the 8 years since this video has been posted. Also, it's impedance, not impendance.

+Alexander Olsson I just bought the Rode NT1A and am quite happy with it so far. I'd definitely recommend this mic if you're just starting out. Rhode is the Champion ! You can even hear it on this video if you watch it using HQ headphones.. Rhode has a more clearer,flater sound and it's realistic,precise,acurate.. Spark is too boomey.. Spark is better for instrument recording. Rhode is the best Vocal mic without a doubt. I even have a AKG C214 Whitch cost's around 320 dollars but Road is still better, it beats even the AKG... Only mic that cant be compared with the cheap ones is the dynamic Shure SN7B. I have that one too, its the best if you record in a loud environment.

although you are entitled to your own opinions, I believe, on the contrary, that the blue spark is a bit deeper and richer, although it doesn't pick up as much background noise, which can be good or bad. I do like the NT1 better but when a subtle difference like this, the Spark can easily be found for around 150, and it's bigger brother the Bluebird for a bit higher, which really puts the Rode's 240 dollar price tag away. The bluebird, I feel, is a substantial mic that is comparative to the Rode NT1

Make sure you're using an XLR male to female cable and not an XLR to 1/4" jack cable. Check if you're providing the phantom power of 48V to the Mic. and Make sure you've installed and chose the correct driver in your DAW as well as have the right input selected on the track you're recording.
