I appreciate that you included Van Gogh, I was shocked at its tinting strength, because the rest of its range is usually quite respectable.

I always learn so much from your videos! When I first learned watercolor, my teacher had us use W&N New Gamboge in a 3-color primary palette. Back then W&N New Gamboge was PY153. In the Colossal Color Showdown for New Gamboge, I've learned that it has been completely reformulated, and now uses PY150 & PR209. It behaves NOTHING like the old New Gamboge. (old New Gamboge???) I've moved away from W&N and gone on to explore other brands, but still dip back into that W&N palette sometimes. So now I know that if that 20 year old tube of New Gamboge ever gets used up, I should not just go and buy a new tube. It will not be the same. Which is exactly the purpose of the Colossal Color Showdown - helping us to know what to expect from different colors/brands. Thanks so much!!!!

Have you tried/heard of sennelier's new gamboge? They still use the old pigment PY153 but some say it's still not the same. I have it, but don't have an older tube to compare it to!

@@halewatercolor Hi! I can't find a Sennelier color named New Gamboge. "Sennelier Yellow Light" is a single pigment of PY153. (Like the old W&N New Gamboge.) I happen to have both, so I painted a swatch of each. The old W&N New Gamboge seems much more orange to me than the Sennelier Yellow Light. Sennelier has 2 other colors that contain PY153: Indian Yellow (PY154, PY153) and Sennelier Yellow Deep. (PY83, PY153) Unfortunately I don't have either of those colors to compare to the old W&N New Gamboge.

Totally agree about student grade stuff. If a beginner bought the Daniel Smith Watercolor Essentials set or MaimeriBlu Watercolor Intro set they'd have all they need. Learn color mixing as well.

I have the Gamboge by M Graham as well as the Mission Gold and I have been happy with them. I was most familiar with it from Teoh's channel and his great use of the Daniel Smith version. But you are right on the Daler Rowney! It looks just like summer sunshine!

rembrandt's was my first experience of a new gamboge. i didn't realise it was basically a tiny bit darker than pure PY150. great vid as always, thank you!

I like the Hobien and the Mission Gold. I like the lighter yellow color But the Daniel Smith is nice for a deeper color.

I would pick D.R. or MG I don’t like the grainy brownish looking ones.

Thanks for the video. I have the Daniel Smith, which I really like, but that Daler Rowney is a delightful surprise. I might have to add that to my next order from Jackson’s. I feel like the cooler yellows with PY150 are a lot like quinacridone gold and too muddled compared to the warmer versions. I always learn something new and helpful from you. Thanks for putting in the work for all of us😘

I am not a huge fan of warm yellows and yellowy oranges, they don’t find place in my mixing, but I agree with you that the warmer smoother ones look better on their own and probably are easier to use. If I need a py150, I can buy it on its own.;)

I still have a lot of VG paint because in the stone age when I first became interested in watercolor a store that was going out of business had a metric crapton of tubes for $1 each. They're still useful for quick composition sketches and the like.

I've only ever used the DS New Gamboge, and it's a mainstay on my palette! However, M. Graham looks like it would be a decent substitution for me. Not a huge fan of the dirtier yellows

I really like DS New Gam, has always behaved for me and looks great. Van G new gam obviously sucks. lol To be fair though lets be honest every brand (ALL of them) have 1 or 2 stinkers that are low on tint vs others or do something unexpected. IMO Van G does have a handful of good colours based on single pigments. They aren't as stingy with cheaper pigments and their tint is much better. Still I agree I would never suggest a full van g or cotman set, too many weak ultramarines and odd hue aproximations. Van Gs does have a few winners their Azo green (PY129) is quite good, (really its so close to DS/M.Gram that I can't bring myself to spend 3-4x the price side by side you really can't tell much if any difference) and I find their pyrrole orange much the same (and seeing as I rarely use either it do not feel bad about grabbing those colours as I can often get them on sale for $3.) IMO the main issue with student grades is the unexpected behaviour of "more expensive" colours, the hues and the odd mixes. The cobalts, ceruleans, cads ect. A new painter can for sure use a good number of Van Gs colours based on the more inexpensive pigments. The catch is knowing which ones are good. Which is why people ask you to add them to your review. :) Even with tons of money sunk into my palettes I still use a couple Van Gough cause they actually have a handful of good highly pigmented colours that are very even and rewet nice, its not just about price. With student sets even if 3/4 of the set is great having some of the staple colours suck just kills the value. Still some of those cotman/Van G tubes really are good paints. If you are going to consider adding any of them to your further tests.... if its a Mixed pigment (or a hue) just skip them, I don't think anyone is really curious about those I believe we all know they are going to be bad. However if you are going to test a colour where either of them have a single = pigment # variety... I would vote test them. Some of the pyrrole/azo/pr101 type single pigments might surprise you.

The only cheap , called professional by manufacturer, i would recomend would be white nights ...but that said i encourage all to wait for sale ...or coupon of 50% off at jo anns and pick up one tube of winsor newton unless it will cost you gas money.

My Winsor and Newton new gamboge looks nothing like yours. Mine is quite a lovely orange yellow! And, yes, it does not react to salt.

@@grannysmithart Sure enough! On the W&N website the current pigments are PR209 & PY150! My tube says PY153. And it says, “New Gamboge is a **recently reformulated** warm yellow pigment resembling genuine toxic Gamboge.” Good to know! I’ll be needing a new tube soon! It probably won’t be the new formulation. 👍
