I have the M Graham PG18 Viridian. It's one of the only M Graham paints that totally sets up in the pan. It works really well. The payload is good and it stands up in mixes. As always, such a fun episode!

Loving the series! I love real viridian (pg 18) for mixes and it’s great to have and learn about all the pigments for what that pigment is string in. Pg7 Pthalo however is an entirely different colour and pigment and works completely differently. I feel Senellier made the worst choice by mixing the two options you can’t buy it as a base for custom mixes as you get a mix already. However it might be fun to make my own Senellier style mix but I’ll do tests to see if it’s ‘worth’ doing. Paper really effect smoothness and cauliflowering.

I have the Winsor and Newton Viridian and I LOVE it! One of my favorite hues ever! It is a little hard to rewet straight from the tube, but I tend to add a little glycerin to it before it dries so that it’s easier to use. But even without that, it’s not too bad. I think maybe I’ll try the M. Graham version soon to see how they compare, but I think I’ll always have a Viridian on my palette!

This was very helpful. My original viridian was a W&N Cotman and I really only like it mixed with a little alizarin crimson or burnt sienna. I recently got a DS pthalo green (blue shade) which I bought to function as my new viridian. I have yet to swatch it mixed with other colors so I may end up getting one of these pigments too! 😁

Glad to hear you found some brands which did rewet. I don’t use veridian, but I vaguely remember reading that even brands which rewet easily for most colors eg m Graham and Daniel Smith were less than optimal for Veridian.

I don't have any PG18s, but I do have a few PG7s that came with paint sets. Including Turner.I don't really like the color on it's own, but I will use it for mixing colors.

Hi, i have the Daniel smith & the sennelier which i use the most. I have from 50 years ago Winsor and newton tubes but i would have to cut the tube open, one day i might but for the moment I'll stick to my 2 newer paints! Love these comparisons videos, very helpful, thank you

First of all, I'm a beginner and my first use of viridian was Winsor Newton Cotman... PG7, I just wanted a viridian watercolor of better quality! I just received Da Vinci Viridian, which is PG18, and I thought something wasn't right... I liked the vivid color in a PG7 apparently... so I figured it would be bright. I like Da Vinci ... have 4... anyway always appreciate your help... I probably would have ordered Sennelier had I watched this first... Thanks 😊 for sharing another great lesson!!! A California Gramma ♥️

I was very interested in this. Because I have been painting for a very long time. I have bought Ceridian that is like the real and some that was like pthalo found this confusing . Now I can look at the pigment and understand how to use it. Good education thank you.

As always, I find your Color Showdowns interesting and informative. I recently bought some Turner watercolor paints as an alternative practice paint to my Daniel Smith paints. All of them are now in half pans. I got out the Viridian this morning, which has been in the half pan for at least 2 weeks undisturbed after my initial reference color swatching. I had no problems rewetting the paint in the pan. One thing I have found with Turner is some sort of mixing inconsistency, with random tubes having an extraordinary amount of Gum Arabic ( I think) at the top of the tube. I read that you can massage the tube before squeezing out paint, but fail to see how to do that with a brand new tube. I have also had quite a few tubes which contained a lot of air. I guess you get what you pay for.

My M. Graham PG18 Viridian is the -only- M. Graham color that has dried in the pan after 3 years. LOL But Viridian is my favorite mixing green and I loooove the softness that the genuine pigment mixes make. I'd like to try the Daniel Smith because of the granulation but I'm too scared to get a non-honey paint in this pigment.

Team M. Graham for my Viridian ... I do want to get a small tube of Schmincke's to try out as I hear it's very good. This is also a pigment I keep getting more and more drawn to as I like the granulating glowy greens you get with like a Nickel Azo Yellow and the purply greys you get mixing with magenta/violet colors. With Viridian (as with Potter's Pink) I usually give it a little scrub with a waterbrush and give them a few seconds and they tend to rewet fine after that.

I have just found your channel. What you do is so very helpful!! I live in Canada so am lucky to get Daniel Smith at a reasonable-ish price. So am leaning towards DS for my Viridian. But - I did notice you did not include Roman Szmal in your comparison which I know is PG18. Can you say why?

I use pg7 and pg18… interchangeably as the best green for mixing greens, blues/violets and neutrals. As I always wirk with limited palettes, I choose one or the other depending on whether there is a big area on the painting where I do or don’t want a green to granulate, and how much texture I want in general. If I already have ultramarine and cerulean blue there, there will be enough texture anyway. Differences in tinting strengths never deterred me from combining colors on my palette.

Ok. After watching this I might consider Holbein or M. Graham after my Schmincke is gone, Sty with the Schmincke, or try DaVinci since DV is affordable in the US. But I still think I might not repurchase.

If I had to choose just one, the Holbein gets my vote. The M. Graham is luscious, but I have enough strong greens that I'd prefer a paler viridian.

Me too... PG7 was my first experience with Viridian... it was Winsor Newton Cotman... a beginner paint... I just bought a viridian from Da Vinci, which was PG18, and kind of disappointed it wasn't brighter! That's why I love my dot sample charts... not every brand has them, but they're worth it!!!
