You can get Kamaka, Kanile’a, KoAloha and other Hawaiian made ‘ukuleles from our website: www.theukulelesite.com/shop-b...
This video is from a few years back but I had only uploaded it to our Vimeo channel. We'll redo this comparison soon but each of these have the same basic tone you will hear from their 2019 models. Some of what you hear is the string difference. Each has their own stock strings in this example. Still, with good speakers you should be able to pick up on some of the differences in the biggest Hawaiian K brands. Thanks for watching. See you next time. Aloha!

When I closed my eyes, the sound I liked the best is Kamaka. Koaloha second. I like open, warm, not so twangy.

Videos like this are so interesting - both for the video and the comments. I feel like I’m at a wine tasting - people use language in a fascinating way. “Bright,” “warm,” etc. seem like they should be objective but aren’t - different people clearly have different, nuanced definitions of those adjectives. But I love the tone of each of these, I like how you’ve edited the video together, and I really appreciate the comparison. I think I lean toward the Ko’Aloha, but I don’t have the vocabulary to say why. It resonates with me - pun intended.

Something about the Kanile'a high end notes ring so pure to me. Very close though to be sure.

Kanilea > high tones are little rounded. It is not as loud as, for example, concert Koaloha KCM 00... but sounds so sweet :) and I already have it :) Kamaka > sounds the best Koaloha > sounds clear All three sound great :) The sound also depends on the strings used and your own preferences...

All three sound great, but the Kanile'a is my favorite. It sounds complex and richly resonant.

The Koaloha was the best sounding one.

Just by listening and not looking, I’d have to say the KoAloha sounds clear and balanced. Kamaka sounds a bit muted and muddy. Kanilea is punchy and bright.

KoAloha sounds nice and mellow, with a lot of bass. Agree on the other ones tho.

Kamaka is starting to feel like a faded dame. Like Gibson in the 80's. Big name & big price tag, but the tone isn't holding up and the wood grade is the lowest. Koaloha has the most balls. I went with a Kanilea because of their beauty.

Low notes/"On the day that you were born the angels got together" 1:14 Kanile'a || 1:20 KoAloha|| 1:27 Kamaka Stock strings on each several years ago: Kanile'a/Aquila Corde Super Nylgut || Koaloha/Fluorocarbons, possibly Worth CM or something similar || Kamaka/"D’addario Pro Atre J71’s dyed black. The Kamaka sets high G is .0285 instead of .0290. Every other string is exactly the same."

All of them sound great, Kanile'a's sound is brighter, KoAloha's is deeper and Kamaka's is more balanced. I bought a Kanile'a K-1 in 2011 and I would never sell it for any reason.

Nice work and I enjoyed all of these premium Ukes…I’m personally a fan of Kanilea…but all sound beautiful. However there is so much variation in wood, construction, strings, playing techniques etc that it is hard to generalize on the overall relative merits of each brand. Bottom line…play what you love ❤️

Is it possible to show us the comparison of 2019 models of Kamaka, Koaloha (high G), and Kanile'a? Cause I think now they have new bracing systems (at least, Kanile'a). I believe people all around the world who doesn't have a store which stocks 3 different brands at the same time would be appreciated! (I'm one of them is about to order one of the 3K brands ukulele from you and can't decide which one to go) Thanks in advance. Keep up the amazing work going, HMS!

If I had that much cash to spare I would get them all! 😁 listening to the sound though, I feel like both Koaloha and Kanile'a sounds so good when fingerpicked. Is it just me because I think with that sound it may not be good to do heavy strumming? Like overpowering especially for the Koaloha? I find the Kamaka sound to be more flexible to use on both fingerpicking and strumming (heavy). Probably jist change the strings that will help shine the notes when fingerpicked and unplugged. And that's what I'll be ordering soon 😁 But that's just me. What does evryone else think? Would love to hear it. 😊

Totally agree with you. I tried those 3 ukuleles at Hawaii and I decided to get the Kamaka HF-3 and put another strings (Fremont Soloist Low G with Lava)... and it's "OTHER INSTRUMENT"!!! (I'm using it with Hi or Low G depending on what style of music/song I want to play that day) I play Flamenco and I love fingerpicking and heavy strumming of course, ant there's no overpowering on Low or Mid frequencies. I would love to get all of them too because all of them has it's own personality and will fit in your music depending on your Hands/Taste/Style/Song/Mood/etc... you want to go for.

At 1'40 the high notes of the Kanile'a sound a bit out of tune compared to the open low strings.

I am partial to Kanilea but the others sound just as good. The Kanilea has a greater depth of spectrum sound that I like. Plus I think they look better as the others just look... old LOL

My favorite are the Sonny D ukes made in the 90's, but the later ones made past 2000 lost their unique quality tone. I haven't been impressed with the Kamaka ukes that have been produced the past 15 years, the tone and quality aren't consistent or as good as the older ones from the 70's to late 90's. Kanile'a ukuleles impressed me when they first came out because they sound like aged vintage Kamaka's. KoAloha ukes have always consistently had great tone, resonance, brightness and just always sound good no matter the size you play or decade they are made in. I just bought an older Kanile'a and may be purchasing a bargain 1972 Kamaka soon. One day I hope to own a KoAloha and older Sonny D.
