The Gibson J45 is my favorite and most used acoustic guitar for recording. It doesn't matter what genre. My partner Matt Goldman keeps a 2001 J45 at our studio and I've used it on every single song and record for the last 3 and half years.

None. I heard NO difference in the guitars. You should have someone else play the guitars without you knowing which was being plated and try to identify the guitars, When you play them you get non audio clues that help you identify them.

The 2001 Mahogany to me. Is more mellow and balanced to my ears. I own a 2023 J-45 Standard and love the guitar. ❤

The ‘91 is special. Playing them myself in a room I usually go for rosewood b/s guitars, but for tracking, mahogany + mic = recording delight.

Man, there’s some uniquely warm about that ‘06. Every single J45 I’ve played has sounded so different. I’ve got a 1970 J45 deluxe that I love. It’s not too boomy, not too bright. Secret studio weapon!

The production quality on this video is fantastic. Great job with it! Thanks for the J45 info. I'm a bit of a Yamaha FG fan, but I might pick up the Epiphone version J45 to try it out.

James Taylor used a j-50 which is the natural top instead of sunburst. The only difference. He may also have had a j-45 but most of his work was on the j-50. Most pictures you see of him back in the day was with his j-50. Same guitar just different finish. I have a j-45 I bought when I went to buy a d-18 to go with my hd-28 and d-35 martins. I wanted a mahogany body guitar. I played the d-18 then tried the j-45. I now own a wonderful j-45. The shorter scale length and action sold it. I did have to pay a little more but well worth it. This was the first quality guitar I have ever purchased that didn't have to be set up. I bought a 1970 d-18 new but left it in my car in August of 1984 and cooked it. Cracked the top, warped the neck and bubbled the finish and pick guard which also cracked the top at the pick guard in two other places. But yes on the j-45. I would recommend it. Only problem is the play ware where your arm rests while playing. The sunburst finish shows ware very well no matter what polish or wax I have used. The finish is very dull where your arm rests. But that don't effect the sound or playability at all. I love my j-45. Get yourself one you will love it. The quality of workmanship is great.

Having owned a rosewood guitar for decades, I was biased in favor of them until I heard this video. The rosewoods in this video seem sharper and crisper, while the mahoganys have a more mellow tone.

I agree. Perhaps my bias is that it sounds exactly like my 91, but I like the softer tones it offers. For the most part though the difference was so minuscule that I would be happy with any one of them

Love J45s ...had the pleasure of playing a 50s model that you could feel the mahogany vibrate against your chest when you strummed it ! I liked all the models in your video and liked and subscribed ....also as sound drops I would love to hear a mic picking up below the sound hole ...I know it sounds crazy but I'm an old gal lol 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦

I've pretty much always preferred Mahogany over Rosewood, especially on a Gibson.. a J-45 or a Hummingbird.. but my main weapon of choice right now is a 2012 Gibson Advance Jumbo (obviously Rosewood) so my ear is digging the 2 Rosewood guitars. Lol.. All 4 sound amazing!! Love the video! 🤘

I remember watching this video when it Was first uploaded like a year and a half ago and left a comment about my opinion at that time.. So re-watching it a year and a half later my opinion has changed lol.. My first comment I didn't really give a specific favorite and mostly commented on the Rosewood and Mahogany differences.. My opinion now is I believe my favorite is the '91 J45.. although the '01 is also amazing.. Man all 4 are amazing and obviously I'd be beyond happy if I owned any of them.. I play a Gibson Advanced Jumbo (2012) and it seriously sounds and plays unbelievable!! Yet, I'm still thinking about trading or selling it to get a Gibson with Mahogany back and sides..Preferably a Southern Jumbo or Hummingbird Standard.

Both of the Rosewood j45's sound best to me. But out of context it's hard to say how they will sit in a track. Frankly I'd take anyone of them and be happy.

I probably like the 2001 most. I had a 2013 True Vintage (“Banner”) that was great, and now a Collings CJ45 T, which is a more modern take on the sound worth comparing.

I love Martin D and Gibson J45 but for recording. I went cheaper but more practical. The Yamaha silent acoustic. When you plug it in its a modeled perfectly holy grail of Yamaha acoustics I cant remember what one. But its just so much more practical for recording when you have a furnace kicking on and off 6 months a year, and an untreated room. Theres no micing up theres no issues with room or the AC in summer or furnace in winter. Its the PERFECT utility guitar for recoding. I would rather play my “good” guitars but for practicality and utility. The silent acoustic is hands down the best for home studio recording. I sometimes put an sm57 on the 12th just to catch some picking detail of the pick on the strings. But thats it. And its not needed its just something I find adds some detail.

I prefer the sound of the 2 with mahogany B & S. That is the classic J-45 sound for mr. The rosewood J-45's sounded a bit muted - not really like a D-28 IMO.

The 2001 was my favorite strummer and the rosewood was my favorite flat picker. It just had the slightest more bite to the sound. And the top end sparkled, but it was one of my least favorite strummers.

In an older comment they say they use 12's. I've had mine for almost a year and that's all I have used, Martin Retro. Try out what ever, 12's 13's, coated uncoated, cool thing is, you got time, that guitar belongs to you now.

I put 11s on my strat . Cracked the nut in half . couldnt play the damn thing . Went back to 10s . On the other hand 11s are great on my Washburn J3 jazz box . But I generally dont bend on that guitar . I have Dadadario extra light on my j45 which is best for my playing style on that guitar . I do like to experiment a little on differant guitars . Its what you like and feels and sound best for you
