This time, we do a quick comparison of the two main options today if you are in the market for a semi-automatic Czech Vz.58 rifle. First is the SA Vz.58 built in the Czech Republic by Czech Small Arms (CSA) and imported/converted by Czechpoint-USA. The one in the video is the 'Military Select' variant with bakelite style furniture and of current make with an intact bayonet lug. Second is the VZ-2008 Sporter, which is built here in the USA by Century Arms International (CAI) using a military surplus parts kit and American receiver & barrel.

I’ve got one the Century Arms 2008 back in 2015 when they were like $550 with the 5 mags n cleaning kit and put over 2500 rounds through. I’ve only had 1 FTF other then that no issues what so ever. The only Con with these is the pause in the trigger pull when you try to fire really fast. Mags can Be hard to find but other then that it’s pretty solid for a Century build. So far it’s been pretty reliable over the years

My CA Vz 2008 is a great shooter and the only problem I had was the pin for the gas block worked itself out but it was an easy fix. Also, I got a Vz 58 in 5.56mm from you a couple years ago and it is a fantastic rifle. I was able to hit steel out to 600 yards no problem and the rifle just flat out runs and shoots great. Thanks Misha!

I own both of these rifles. The Czechpoint one has original military barrel & is flawless. The century has a canted front sight& I had to have a tab welded onto the bolt to eliminate the " trigger gremlin" ( not resetting). Although the Century one isn't perfect..it's a great shooter like the Czechpoint rifle. Love them both..Thanks for the several videos you've made on the VZ58 Misha..this is a underrated rifle. 👍

Excellent video Misha! I always enjoy learning more about the VZ series of rifles, they are very nice firearms for sure. My connection to the VZ series of rifles though has recently hit a major political roadblock. Up here in Canada, our Federal Government banned all VZ/CZ/CSA series of rifles, along with 1500 other types of firearms on 1 May 2020 (May Day ironically). Basically if the rifle was semi-auto, mag fed, and black, kiss it goodbye. They even banned some bolt-action rifles in larger calibers, and even certain 12ga and 10ga shotguns. The VZ series of rifles are very popular here in Canada due to their short length, light weight, and reliability in all types of weather, so this ban impacts 1000's of us in Canada. Our pro-gun organizations have several court cases pending against our Federal Government to get the ban overturned, and find out what information if any the government used as a basis for the ban. The ban itself was done behind closed doors and off the record using what is know as an Order In Council, there was no discussion or debating on it, yet we are all faced with confiscation of property, potential for police use of force, and imprisonment if we don't comply. How's that for a country that claims to be democratic? Apologies for my politiking here, just thought that viewers have to made aware that guns in the hands of peaceful citizens have 2 enemies, rust and politicians! Please keep up the good work on your videos, you are truly a treasure trove of information.

don't worry mate, up here in the Czech Republic we still fight for our rights, our govt stands behind us but the big brother from the EU shows its muscles.... stupid politicians are everywhere, your Canadian politicians just seems to be more impudent... :( pity though with the VZ58s being banned there now. Up here we call the export modes "Canadian" for the longer barrel :)

Despite there reportedly being a slim chance that a VZ 2008 might have any issue, I didn't want to even think about the possibility, nor the possible repair charge which is typical of a specific Memphis-area gunsmith I used (he's certified and Very pricey). * Having sold two seldom-used guns provided the cash for a "NIB" Czechpoint VZ, almost a year ago. It's nice to have the highest quality control, which is also why All four of my "actual AKMs" are imported: Maadi etc.

As for the receivers being a rough casting and then milled into the spec - that was a thing with the whole gun. It was designed with that in mind and the factory at that time started cooperation with another non-firearms Czechoslovak company and gained a pretty good knowledge in that area. From what I know, for example the breech lock is a casted piece to avoid the expensive and time consuming milling process. I believe, the receiver should be the same case just like the bolt itself. I know for sure that CZ-70 pistols, Vz. 61 Skorpions or CZ-75s have casted lowers and are not CNC milled from a huge chunk of steel.
@misha5670

I think you are thinking more of 'forging' which is 100% true. The CAI receivers made here, at least most of them, are made from an 'investment casting' that is later machined into the final receiver shape. Its not a bad process if QC is high.
@CzechoslovakGunStories
@CzechoslovakGunStories 4 жыл бұрын
@@misha5670 yep, you are probably right - forging it is :) I have zero experience with these technologies even in the czech language :) As for the QC - the cold war era Vz.58s had a very good QC it seems. After all it was the main weapon of the Czechoslovak trooper and Soviets were really curious if our gun meets the standards just like their rifle. There was even a couple of trials in the USSR comparing it with an AKM and Vz.58 did very well. Compared to the stamped sheet AKM couple of parts on Vz.58 broke during the endurance test of 15k rounds but in the end the vz. 58 did slightly better in case of the number of malfunctions. I read the complete test record and the level of thouroughness was interesting :)

Other than the stock being designed for midgets, the VZ is lovely. Add a muzzle brake and a reliable optics mount, and it's a great shooter. For some reason, the side-rail optics mounts would always shift under recoil, regardless of clamp tension... So I switched to a Czech-made "RRarms" mount. Now it's a 2-3 MOA gun all day. 🙂

Also billet. Billet aluminum or steel means it starts as a solid block and then is machined from that into its final form. Billet usually has the nicest look but tends to be heavier and a bit weaker than something forged. Forged is the best way to go, Milspec AR-15 recievers are forged, a milled AK or VZ reciever would be billet technically. Cast is the cheapest and lowest grade. Definitely stay away from any cast pressure bearing parts on firearms such as trunions, gas blocks, bolts etc. Cast being melted and poured into a mold. Now that I have regurgitated all of this information, I just realized I'm not exactly sure what the process is in making forged parts.

@@misha5670 was it fixed ? I heard you could use a small thin washer so that it is shimmed in place. If that make sense.

I love my VZ2008. Picked it up years ago for $449 w/ 4 mags. It has the awful folding stock though, and your point about recoil is spot on. It's not really a pleasant gun to shoot with the recoil and that awful stock. Still, overall, super pleased with what I paid. That said, I don't know if I'd pay 800+

Put an AK-74 pattern brake on it. Got mine from CNC Warrior. Also using an M4 stock adaptor with a cheap Magpul stock. The slotted bolt holding the stock on must be heated to loosen the locktight. Replaced it with an Allen head bolt from a three piece bicycle crank. My VZ2008 is now pleasant to shoot. It's also been as reliable as my NPAP and is more accurate. The trigger on this 2008 is very heavy but smooooth and for whatever reason it can shoot some very small groups.

I'm left handed. The stock used to beat my cheek up really bad. I took the slant brake off that came with it. Problem solved. Now I have the proper brake and it's great. vz 2008

Backorder from Brownells. That's what I did. It's the easiest way to get one. They will charge you when it ships. They don't get a lot in so if you are waiting to get one when it shows in stock, that's a lot harder.

both - short name (Czechia) and political name (Czech Republic) are ofcourse still valid, but brand Czech Republic is known in the world, it took more than 20 years to export that name so they will not switch to short name in near future I think, because nobody knows where is some Czechia, they know only Czech Republic and former Czechoslovakia
