Comparing Exhaust With H-Pipe vs. No H-Pipe. Difference In Sound?

We compare the exhaust sound on two muscle cars that have the same 2 1/2" exhaust, the same Flowtech Terminator mufflers, full length headers, and very similar engines. One has a H-pipe and the other does not have a H-pipe. This direct comparison will show how much difference there is in rapping blap sound. We show how the exhaust H-pipe, or X-pipe will mellow out the sound of the exhaust.
The two vehicles are a 1965 Impala SS and a 1967 GMC C15 pickup. The GMC has a 450 HP 383 with 9:1 compression, BluePrint heads, and a Comp Hyd roller, 450 HP/450 TQ. The Impala has a BluePrint 400 that has 9.5:1 compression, BluePrint heads, and a Comp Cams Hydraulic roller camshaft, 508 HP/500 TQ.
Below is the description of the FlowTech Terminator Mufflers from Holley's website:
The Terminator™ is constructed entirely of super thick, fully-welded aluminized steel, with huge 3" inner pass tubes that reduce backpressure and increase horsepower like no other muffler can. Put a couple of Terminators behind your powerplant and you'll hear a bark that will scare the meanest junk yard dog in town!
Features:
Aluminized Steel Construction
3" Inner Pass Tubes
Reduced Backpressure
Increase Horsepower
No Glass To Burn Or Blow Out
Will Flow In Either Direction
Fully Welded For Strength/Durability

As a kid, a former biker as well, it was loud and louder. I have grown to like that smoother sound, found that the closer to the header that I could get the muffler the quieter it was in the cabin. Some of the rowdy is still in my blood tho an a sixty five impala was one of my first new cars... that is saying something for me as I do love my fords... I am 72 now, should of grown up..... na just old

Definitely a noticeable difference, I’m partial to the cackle or blap sound myself

To me the Impala sounds better except for the cackle when letting off. The truck has a hint of that Flowmaster "nasally Q" sound that I don't like but I could live with it as it isn't as pronounced as with a Flowmaster.

I remember test back in the day and gain a little bit of torque and and horsepower. I'm not as much of a fan of the x. H pipe sounded better

Truck needs the same length tail pipes for a correct comparison. No tail pipes makes a huge difference.

I’m kicking the idea of keeping true duals or fabbing in an X on my stock setup on my SRT Jeep. I’m all about doing my own things and a plasma torch with my welder makes for a good time. I do like it open cats under there but I can already tell the crackles are there and I’m not into that. This definitely makes me lean into the X fab to mellow the snaps out. I’m planning on reducing the size of the two stockers in the rear and ditching the big suitcase up front. I’m super curious how this will turn out. If it’s no good I will just buy a setup like I was going to anyway, but with it off for a different reason, I think I’ll play a little. Thx for the vid man. And a spot to spill haha

Excellent video...! I'm running a pair of Borla 40085 (XR-1 Sportsman) mufflers with a Borla 60548 X-pipe and my car doesn't sound much different from the truck with the H-pipe (at least not when revving). Some people say this happens because both of the mufflers are shared by the entire exhaust system instead of them being separate from one another. I don't know if that is correct, but I imagine that some amount of sound cancelation also occurs during the crossover which may also explain the lower volume. Have you heard anything similar...?

I am no expert on exhaust. What I have learned is that the opposite bank of a V based engine will hit each other in the X or H pipe. This impact acts to muffle the sound somewhat. It takes the blap, blap, blap sound out, especially on decel. The exhaust pulses also have more than one path to exit the exhaust which helps with exhaust scavenging.

@@RebeldryversGarage let me ask you something. Was the crossover in the H-pipe the same diameter as the main pipes...? I ask because I read somewhere that Chrysler engineers once specified that the crossover section of the H-pipe should be roughly 2/3 the diameter of the main pipes or greater and I wonder if increasing or decreasing that diameter would increase or decrease the effect of the crossover.

Ive got a 78 la 360 almost rebuilt from my shop, putting long tube headers on with 2.5 inch couplers coming out of headers, im seeing different part #s for the terminators, do you know what # is on your impala? Sounds heavenly, thanks

It appears that Holley bought Flowtech and discontinued the Terminators. They probably have something exactly the same in one of their other brands. It's not a chambered muffler.

I went to an exhaust shop close to my house since the car wasn't street legal. The shop wanted $125 extra for an H pipe???? They said all this BS about having to add more hangers, and so on and so forth. They gave me a choice of using a stamped steel ebay $25 X pipe, or an H pipe, both were $125 more. I refused both. I now realize how much better it could sound, and I have the ability at my home to add one, so I will. Sorry but that no H pipe car sounds like hammered crap, lol. The truck sounds WAY better!!

There are no additional parts or hangers for H pipes. And, the labor is about 15 minutes.

@@RebeldryversGarage I knew that, and HE knew that, he was just trying to rip me off. I have had an H pipe added to nearly every exhaust I've had done that was dualed, and not one shop has added more than $20 to the price, and some did it for free. I have a two week vacation coming up, and I will do it myself. I also JUST cut off the tailpipes this guy put on, and it completely changed the car for the better. Not sure what he screwed up, but it was somehow causing an engine vibration while revving around the 1500-2200 rpm range. It did it with my old engine, and now with my crate engine, which was completely different balancer, torque convertor, and flexplate. The tailpipes came off, and it revs quicker, no more vibration 1500-2200, and even seems to idle smoother now as well. I will be getting rid of the Pypes "Turbo Pro" mufflers, and installing Magnaflows with turndowns, and an H pipe. Once I cut the tailpipes, the Pypes mufflers were nice and low tone, but also had this raspy wheezy exhaust leak sound. Something about the internal design I guess?

The mufflers I have now are the first one on the left. One mistake already made, that will never be made again. www.pypesexhaust.com/sites/default/files/products/Muffler-Flow-Chart_186.jpg
