Over the years, we have unboxed, tested, and reviewed a TON of different NES clone systems. Hyperkin, Old Skool, Retro-Bit, Gamerz Tek, and others have all put out budget-friendly clone systems designed to allow you to play your classic 8-bit Games again. We've put together all of the NES Clone console reviews we've done to date and man, you can see that along with the changes in hardware, our channel has also changed a lot. Let's take a look back to see the different NES-ONLY compatible systems we've reviewed and how they ranked at the time.
Please note: This is a time capsule look back at the history of this channel. Over the years we've improved cameras, capture devices, microphones, and more. Some of these videos go back almost 6 years. I know the quality in some of the older scenes doesn't look great. We've learned, evolved, and improved.
Also Note: The Retro-Bit RES+ is no longer being sold. It is being included for comparison's sake.
About these systems:
All of these systems are under $50 and feature some sort of system on a chip or SoC. A system on a chip essentially reproduces the functionality of all the hardware in one integrated circuit. These have been around for decades at this point, & are relatively inexpensive to produce. If it is inexpensive and emulates the hardware using just one or a few circuits what's the downside? Game authenticity often suffers from this implementation. Most of these SoCs suffer from what is called a reverse duty cycle issue which negatively impacts the audio. This leads to games not sounding correct. SoC's also have inaccurate color palettes which can make games look wrong, and game compatibility is an issue. I do not know of any SoC system that will get past level 2 in Battletoads, & things like the Famicom Disk System will not work. But when you can get an HDMI-equipped NES clone with an SoC for under 30 bucks, sometimes you're willing to make some concessions.
Rankings:
Best Controller:
Gamerz Tek 8Bit HD/8Bit Boy
When it comes to a comfortable and responsive controller, the Gamerz Tek controllers just do something so right. It keeps the overall button size, placement, and layout, but it also refines the shape of the controller to provide round corners instead of the sharp, pointed ones of the Original NES Controller. These are really very good.
Honorable mention: Hyperkin Cadet
Best Video Quality
These all have color palettes that are quite off from the original. The Old Skool and Hyperkin consoles seem to be the worst in our opinion, with the RES+ and 8BitHD looking a little better. None are great, however.
Winner- Toss Up
Best Audio Quality
Much like the visuals, the audio is pretty off on all of these. My go-to test is the coins in Super Mario Bros, and they all have what's called a reverse duty cycle issue. This has existed since clone systems first popped up, and it has never been fixed. All of these have reverse duty cycle issues, which is quite disappointing.
Winner - None, all losers here
Power Port
This may sound odd to include here, but the power port makes a difference, at least to me. None of these systems use USB-C for power, otherwise, that would be a huge W, but at least most include a micro USB port for power. One noticeable exception is the Gamerz Tek 8BitHD which uses a proprietary barrel-style connection. That stinks. The rest all use Micro USB.
A/V Output
Most of these, except for the Retron1, all have HDMI outputs. The Gamerz Tek 8Bit HD & Hyperkin Retron 1 AV ports only have Mono output, which technically all output mono via AV but splits both of these into a left/right channel.
Aesthetics
None of these look like an NES, but they all have their own design styles. The Gamerz Tek 8BitHD has definite NES design influences. The RES+ is the most original looking of the systems, although the controller is definitely NES inspired.
What do you think of this style of video? Would you like to see me do more of these in the future? Let us know in the comments and we'll see what we can do in the future!

I have original hardware here, but I almost always just use my Retron 5. It is just a lot easier to have that one system hooked up that covers a ton of different platforms. More time gaming, less time dealing with hooking up consoles/wiring. The emulation it does has been good enough for me, honestly very few issues at all. The trickiest part is the NES game slot being finicky, but I can usually get it working with a little patience.

That NT Mini is like $2000 - $2500 CAD off eBay these days. That's a big nopers for me. :P It's either a lid-less AVS + RetroTink4K on a smaller QD-OLED TV, or an RGBNes Multiout modded Top Loader, both paired with an EverDrive. The latter gives you the ability to also play on a CRT, so it's more versatile in the end.

My favorite would have to be the Feihao HDMI Famicom handheld from Ali-Express. I use it on the TV most of the time and use my Famicom to NES Mayflash controller adapter and my NES Online controller. I think it's the best one I have ever found. I have a guy that makes me English games. It's about seventy bucks for two games shipped but it's worth it. I have Abbey's Des Morts and Syou Gate waiting at home if I ever get there. I think I will be buying Piopow for the Famicom next. I think he may need somebody to make his cartridges though. My guy couldn't keep up with what he needs. He made a Masterpiece it's going to be a thing for sure.

Yeah it's been a long time my friend since I saw your review of The Gamerstek nes clone way back in 2017 along with the infamous HDMI to AV adapter that was the first I discovered you and since then each system is different than the last, of course the sound on each clone didn't change that part I agreed but compatibility is depending on what kinda game it is and over the years compatibility is different. On one hand for example older clone systems can't play Castlevania 3 do to the MMC5 chip and the new ones does play it but others like Battletoads suffer from the same issue at level 2 it's freeze something on the original Nes doesn't do that. So yeah definitely agree that the quality of each nes clone various to the controllers, video quality Etc, the only thing didn't change the audio of course.

Just bought the nes classic mini system. The lag is awful. Did you experience that as well? Should we just return this and go with something different or is there a way to fix the lag? If we do go with another system, what do you recommend? And how do we go about getting the Japanese versions of games? Thanks so much!

roxolid i know im late but to be completely honest ive had quite a few of those clone consoles honestly all of them are cheaply built and all have issues but my favorite clone console is the old skool classique n the av only model it has issues just like the rest i bought my unit in 2018 shortly after it released my unit has lasted from 2018 untill now and it only is broken because the power port has popped loose from the pcb since im not good at soldering i cant repair it but its no big deal ill buy another unit Edit: cameback to mention the old skool comtrollers are said to be the best of the clone consoles i cant say if thats true or not as both my controllers were defective right out of the box i emailed old skool about it and they never responded for me it wasnt a big deal i just used my vintage sansui joycard controller

I really loved my Retron 5. I used the ips. Patch program on Windows and only had to buy one cartridge for every system. I needed controllers but they were cheap enough. I think that's about the time I started Emulating. Haven't stopped yet. It's in my niece's hands now and I just told her about the program but I need to give her a PC so she can do it. I do not have any clone systems. If I was going to get one I would get the retron 5 with an everdrive so I could use that instead of using my cartridges because some of those systems can be hard on original cartridges putting them in and pulling them out because some of the clone systems hold on to the cartridges really tightly.

I had an NES back in 1991 then a SNES back in 93-95. My issue with getting an original NES is the reliability, will it work and for how long? Also using those RF cables or even an AV cable, not good. I bought an original Megadrive (Genesis) last year and the image quality was awful. It was great to play Sonic on original controllers though.

I had the R5, both versions and both honestly are trash, just the v2 is a bit more durable trash. In the end they're trash because the pins or firmware/OS that it runs seems to in time decide not to like original NES if not other carts eventually and just fail to load legit media, and while the emulator is good it's not excellent. The perk was the ability to dump your games and game saves good for sharing data or swapping it back with a battery change out. I've got the FC Mobile88 FC handheld, that one short of the VRC6/7 and the neediest Sunsoft/Namco expanded mappers it runs stuff accurately is crazy given it's a cheapo handheld, highly recommended. On the SNES side the origianl versions were broken and badly done but the Supaboy S/SFC and since have an accurate core that can run anything the SNES can just as well, even the made up MSU-1 chipset if using the SD2SNES. i recently attached it to a PVM(CRT) and it played excellent using real controllers too on an old screen. I'm watching the video now, hoping something here does full Famicom support right as I have a honeybee, I'd get a clone NES if it didn't suck for once. I do have the FPGA you don't have, Analogues SNES and Genesis systems, also have a NES top loader with their same guy(kevtris) core on the hi def nes kit installed to it. It runs magnificently, better than any non-fpga clone has to date other than maybe that supaboy s. The systems are remarkable and durable, awesome on a flat panel, and I'm told with DAC equally good on a CRT too. And yes those systems like the AVS were also $200/ea. I've got the pocket too, it is the same, the dock is buggy beta garbage though as of this comment.

That color on the first system is just bad, blown out and shifted all kinds of wrong. From Kirby being overly yellowy to Mario and Piston Honda suffering from liver failure(jondas) it's not right. That is a deal breaker for me how off that is. The NES palette has a peach colored hue for one of the colors used commonly for skin tone or that color the kirby status bar has and it's utterly gone.
