The Nabal, Nimlioh and Reed Avocados are all Summer time fruits, and they're all delicious. These varieties have their origins in the highlands of Guatemala, where the climate is similar to coastal California, with the exception that it rains much more in Guatemala. In this video, I compare how productive each of these varieties are. They're all grafted onto my Multigrafted Avocado Tree, and they've been producing fruit these last few years. Now I'm able to observe their production characteristics over multiple years, and report about their production.

Instead of a nabal I recommend a mexicola. Nabal is very similar to reed, but a mexicola would give you a broader range of avocado flavors

I thought I was the only one having problems with critters damaging my avocados, Here in Portugal the black bird is the culprit, which is a very common bird through out Europe. They actually take the fruits off the tree and leave half on the ground.

It’s a big problem. Over here, birds love to eat our persimmons. Luckily birds don’t like avocados

Have you ever come across the Lyon variety or Murrieta Green variety? I live in Nor-Cal and cannot grow many varieties, I found a Queen Tree a few years ago and bought it, I tried to protect it but unfortunately it didn't survive. I do have a 3 year old Fuerte that is thriving but has yet to produce fruit, it is already flowering despite the rain, fingers crossed for this year.

Great video. Been messing around with grafting as well. Got one going but very small tree. Bought a Hass. Going to let it grow then graft it with different varieties. I got about 12 seeds that grew out. Just waiting till I get some good viable stock to start grafting more. I live in Central Cali. What's the best time to graft the stock saplings I currently have?

Noticed you painted the trunk to protect from sunburn, I'm in south central TX zone 8(?) Recently bought a cold hardy tree and noticed where I planted it was not only in direct sunlight but also caught a reflection of the windows of my house and got burnt. Had it replaced and planted in different area. Was doing well but now that it's getting hot I've noticed that it has some protection with filtered sun until about 1230-1 until sun set. Can inused something like a pool noodle to help protect the trunk or should I paint it white. I figured a noodle would be better as it might help in colder months
@AJTheGraftMan
@AJTheGraftMan 2 жыл бұрын
I would paint it white. Some folks paint it green or brown to make it look more natural. Pool noodle is a good idea for cold protection, but I don’t know about heat protection

For sun protection I also paint exposed branches and trunks with white paint (50/50 mix of water and white INDOOR latex)( I bought a gallon of Gliddon for < $15). But some rats ate the bark off the base of the trunks of two avocado trees. Which killed one tree, the other was saved because it still had the wooden nursery stake tied to it so not all of the bark was eaten all the way around. To protect the tree I bought some of the 10' long white(white on the outside and black on the inside, corrugated) plastic rain-gutter underground solid (no drain-holes)drain pipe. It is available in either 3" or 4" diameter. I trimmed off the lower branches to 2' and cut a 2' section of the pipe and slipped it over the tree by folding the branches up and slip the pipe down over it. Eventually I had to slit the pipe as the trunk grew and was stretching the pipe. On trees which already have a lot of branches, slit the pipe and slip it around the trunk from the side, then wrap some wire around it to keep it shut tight. This has protected many of my trees from mice, rats and rabbits gnawing at the tender young bark. To protect the roots from gophers I plant the trees in Root Guard baskets by Diggers. Only use the "Tree"-size baskets because they are made with different chicken wire than the "Bush" size baskets. The "Bush" size use wire that lasts forever and it will eventually girdle the tree roots and kill the tree. The "Tree" size will rust away after 5 years and let the tree roots grow healthy. With that being said, never use galvanized hardware cloth. Hardware cloth is just a delayed death sentence for the tree.

Apparently Reed is more cold sensitive than many other avocado varieties. I hear it cannot tolerate temps below 29 degrees for more than a few hours, though I’ve never experienced this first hand
