I've had a Feadog Pro for some time as I did a review video years ago - and it turns out I've had an original Feadog for a while as well, as I found this one in a jar amongst other whistles. So since I've had the question "What's the difference between an original Feadog and the Feadog Pro" well, here we are.
To be clear, Feadog didn't sponsor this or ask me to do it or anything. I just found these and was kinda curious as to what the difference was myself.

I am from Chile. I have a Feadog Pro imported from Dublin, Ireland. It took me one year to receive my tin whistle because of the pandemic.

I like that you compare some inexpensive whistles, not ever to one can have an expensive whistle , good job

As someone who’s only been playing whistle for a few months I have mixed feelings about whistles in that price range. They’re so inexpensive that it essentially removes any barrier to entry because anyone can afford it, so as soon as my interest was piqued I ordered a Walton’s for about 10 bucks, and after I fell in love I quickly got another cheapo (Clarke sweet tone) so I could have one at home and one at work. Within maybe 2 weeks or so I was becoming frustrated with the dreadful scratchiness in the upper register and how I could never make tunes sound as bright and clear as I hear here on KZfaq. I was becoming discouraged and beginning to think it was me who sucked at playing the whistle but luckily I watched plenty of whistle reviews and got into my head to get just a very slightly more expensive whistle (Tony Dixon for about 25 dollars) and immediately learned that with a decent whistle I can make the instrument do what I want it to. I’ve also now gotten a James Becker plastic D whistle for 20 dollars that sounds even better than the Dixon. I feel like playing those cheapos resulted in a fair amount of wasted time trying to unproductively work on breath control, but on the other hand I wonder how many fewer people would jump into playing if there wasn’t a dirt cheap entry point. I just personally wish I had started with a little bit better of a whistle. Once I actually get good at playing I hope to get a more expensive whistle in the say 75-150 dollar range and hopefully it will play and sound proportionally better than what I’m using now.

That's a very good point and one which I bring up in any sort of general whistle discussion - with tin whistles you can get a *great* instrument for between $75-$125 which is a hell of a good price for a professional instrument, and it's absolutely worth it if anyone is even remotely considering sticking with the whistle. That said, you can also get lucky and find a fantastic cheap Feadog, Generation, Oak, etc. Some of the finest whistle players in history have played and recorded with remarkably cheap, mass-produced instruments.

@@whistletutor oh yea I’ve definitely heard guys who play great with just something like Feadog and prefer the sound from it. Even guys like you who don’t necessarily favor that chiffy sound still make the cheaper instruments sound great. I suppose it was more of a stumbling block for me because I hadn’t played on anything that didn’t sound raspy in the second register so I thought I was breaking the note. I actually started playing whistle with the goal of transferring those skills to the Uilleann pipes when the set I ordered comes next year, but I’ve come to love playing the whistle itself and I think i’ll stick with it long term so I might as well bite the bullet and get a nice whistle like the Humphrey you seem to favor. Thanks for the vids, I might not have gotten anywhere with the whistle if I hadn’t found your channel. I would be like just learning tv and video game songs instead of learning trad playing like what I intend

This review has been very helpful for me. I’ve been struggling on the “original” Feadog for a bit now and not pleased with any of the sound I get from it. Not having any exposure to other whistles or whistle players I thought it was my “learning curve” getting in my way to experiencing pleasure from the instrument. I still think that until proven otherwise. That being said the comment written by Jim O’Brien piqued my interest in Beckers handmade whistles. I placed on order, we’ll see. I really appreciate your videos. Always, to the point and very helpful.

Interesting comparison. I personally (total fan of the Clarke's Original) would pick the blue one out of the three, TBH. Great to find comparison videos. Always helps as a reference if (potential) students want a second opinion.

Interesting, I have collected a handful of whistles over the years, feadog, generation and similar, frankly i always thought that they were the same item just with a different sticker attached,ie. badged. I mentioned at one time,somewhere, that when playing any of the latter my wife who has rather sensitive hearing would whinge and I would retreat to the garden shed and annoy the neighbours. Then I bought a decent instrument, a Killarney brass d, in my case, now the Wife listens and some of the comments actually approve!! Of the cheap whistles only one in the D range sounds ok, the rest vary from I can't play that ,to oh well it's ok for practicing. I have got a black Guinness whistle, not sure from where, and it is OK. Thanks for your videos , I always look out for them.

I bought the feadog starter kit, thought it was with the pro D but was sent the regular. Was disappointed due to that, but this vid made me feel a bit better about the purchase. Thx m8

I like the chiff, it's part of the tin whistle's character. If I want a nice clean sound that's what I play recorder for. That said the pro sounded quite a bit nicer to my ears.

I've never played a feadóg though it seems I might as well have as they sound much like other inexpensive whistles that are not made by Clarke. As an aside, I've watched several of your comparison vids and you haven't mentioned Oak whistles. I have several Gens, a Sweetone [no sir, don't like the hollow sound], a Dixon low D, and several Oaks. And I gotta say that the $11 Oak D is the best high whistle I have and the one I always play. Nice sound, crazy responsive, and feels nicer as the tube is twice as thick as a Gen which provides the weight and balance that really helps my playing.

@@whistletutor it may be of worth to note that some are made in the US. I have the nickel plated one with a black head that's made in Ireland. I know Ted Brown Music has them available online for 10 bucks. They're actually where I bought mine as they have a shop here in Seattle.

I've bought 3 different Feadog whistles in C, all of them sharp and out of tune with themselves. I've tried to give them a fair chance, but I'm now staying away. Killarney, Tony Dixon, even Clarke are the way for me at the moment. Oh and you gotta love the Shaw ones, but as you said in one of your videos, takes so much breath you're on the brink of passing out each time 😅

Got a ebay deal on a feadog pro in nickel d Before that I only had an original Clark with the wood fipple or whatever. Paid 3x as much for that piece of junk The pro feadog in nickel was so much firmer, heavier, felt right, sounded right. It was like it made sense I feel like I can actually progress on it. On the Clark? Awful out of body with it, can't connect, feels unnatural sounds unnatural. So we'll see but I'm happy with mine so far

The only difference between a "standard" nickel plated Feadog and the Feadog Pro is a nickel plated tube with bit more nickel on the tube for the Pro. That's it. The heads are identical, and the extra nickel will make no difference to the sound (whatever non-scientific woo claims there are). The two whistles will likely sound a little different because of the normal variation in the production of the head. The "gritty" nature of the Feadog sound is something I associate only with Feadogs. My Generations (old and newer) don't sound like the gritty Feadogs. Feadogs I find rather louder and, well, not as good sounding as Generations towards the top of the second octave. I think Feadogs are OK as they go, and they are in the same ballpark as "traditional" sounding whistles, but I've always preferred Generations. btw. Have you ever tried Cillian O'Briain's "Improved Whistle", based on the Feadog.

Along with double nickle plating, the Pro tube is thicker than the "standard". I can't find my calipers but, I can tell just by sight that the tube wall is definitely thicker.
@orraman5427
@orraman5427 Ай бұрын
@@NotExpatJoe The wall thickness of the Pro is ~ 0.45 mm and the standard is ~ 0.30 mm. For comparison an old (about 20 years old) nickel Generation is the same as the standard Feadóg.

I think a pro version of feadog should be tunable from the start (meaning the mouthpiece shouldn't be glued) and the mouthpiece shouldn't be hollow like the og version. That wouldn't be hard to make and would actually make a significant difference in tone and versatility
