In this video, I un-box the Powertec Leg Press, compare the two leg machines, show a few hacks, and state which one I like better.
If you have / had trouble putting the compact leg sled together, or if you plan on buying the compact leg sled, check out my Instagram page, Home Gym Hacks and Reviews, for a video Powertec shared with me. You will see the easiest way to install the spring, which is the only problem area during the build.

Wow this is a really well thought out comparison. I ordered the compact sled a few days ago on amazon. In the beginning of your video I was starting to worry that I had made the wrong decision. It sounds like it will actually end up being the better choice for me as I'm mainly going to use it as a supplemental exercise after barbell squats. I appreciate the time you put into making this. keep it up!

Thanks so much! The Leg Press has grown on more a lot more since this video. I removed the seat adjustment tube and now the back pad sits lower, which makes it more lower back friendly for me. Also, I loop the angles 90 grips around the stopper and hold on to those during the leg press instead of holding onto the leg press handles. One of my most recent KZfaq Shorts shows this. Ultimately, my legs are more sore the next day from the LP over the Sled.

I have a bunch of great machines from Titan Fitness however I agree with you that Powertec's leg press is the clear winner. Especially with the size of the metal plate foot area looking 1.5 to 2 times the size of Titan's.

I just received the Body Solid version of the Compact Leg Sled and it is a impressive piece of equipment and it has none of the spring issues, runs on linear bearings, has a higher weight capacity, and the foot brace is designed to do calf raises (also does not move). There were no reviews on it but I decided to take a chance and I am glad. MSRP is higher but you can get them for the same price as the Powertec. BTW, I am a big Powertec fan as I have the Multipress and Dual Hyperextension / Crunch.

I just tried the compound leg press at the fitness store and it was smooth as butter. I didn't add any weight to see if it does that lean when putting on plates but I'll go back and try it and see. Thanks for the review it really helps.

Really good to hear. I don’t think the lean is an issue…the only time I could see it being problematic is if someone loaded the sled unevenly and used it. In my HIT series, I have a video of me using it close to its max weight capacity if you want to see it in action with more weight than I use in this review. Thanks for sharing your feedback…it definitely helps other people who are thinking about purchasing it.

Great video. I don’t have the issue with the grinding. However, I did take of the rollers and lubricated all parts and around the bolts and now it’s a lot smoother. I don’t like the calf raise attachment because it doesn’t give enough ROM so I had to make a block with a 2x4 cut to size and plywood, thus creating a box that goes over the metal calf raise attachment. It’s great now.

Its nice to see these reviews finally being put up. Weren't much out there early last year. I was acrually going to review this machine before I sold it but I completely forgot. It does have a very smooth roller system. I added silicone lubricant to the rollers for added smoothness. It's also very light, very easy to move around (at least for me) One thing I didn't like about this, i was only able to fit a total of 16 - 46lbs plates. (8 on each side) I highly recommend this machine if: -You're on a budget -You're limited on space - your not trying to break crazy PRs Otherwise I'd pass if you can afford going upwards of $2k+ Nothing beats the feeling of a linear bearing system. This leg press wasn't quite good enough for me to keep and I kept it for a solid 5 months. If you strictly want a legpress and nothing else and have no space and this is just a hobby to stay healthy with only $1500 to spare. This is it! Great review on a great product. For those that this product is meant for. It's golden 👌

Finally got tired of setting up and moving my PT leg press attachment and bought the PT leg press, almost got the BS leg press/hack squat again but couldn’t face building it, so I figured I get this given your review, building it was easy enough on my own and didn’t take long, it’s smooth in use and feels better than the BS version I had, one thing that caught me out was the plates loaded on the bottom pins extend beyond the rear frame when pressing, so I had to move it away from the wall I had it against, I really like the size of the foot plate.

i have the older model leg press and love it, i bought it back in 2013 and paid 800 for it, still going strong today and i press with 6-45 lbs plate on the top tier with 6-45 lbs plates on the bottom tier, total of 12 plates. i don’t go past that, i’ll drop it down to 4 plates in total to get a deeper full range of motion and slower concentration rep. i also have the older model multigym and still going strong. only reason that i was sold on this equipment was because of Lee Priest. If you know who Lee Priest is take his word for it as I did, best investment.

Nice review. I've just picked the compact sled up today. I moved from commercial gyms to my home gym about 25 years ago and had been doing squats, extensions, curl and stiff leg dead lifts for thighs. I wanted to add a supplement to squatting. As I'm aging, it's taking longer and longer for the legs to recoup after squatting. Hoping alternating squat days with hack-squats days will help. I liked the sled because of its size - never liked 45- leg presses. Curious: Why do you think there was too much stretch using the calf-bar? I've always tried to get as much extension/stretch as possible doing calves.
@HomeGymHacksandReviews
@HomeGymHacksandReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Awesome! I think the sled is a great addition to all of your other movements. As for the calf block, I don’t think there is too much of a stretch, I think the block sits too high on the platform, which causes my legs to be at an angle I don’t like. If the calf block fit into the platform 6” - 12” lower, I think it would be perfect.

@@HomeGymHacksandReviews Thanks for the reply. Got it- my mistake. You were correct - the instructions leave a bit to be desired. Had the carriage on the rails, before I realized the hook needed to be attached 1st. I omitted the spring completely. I find there isn't enough range of motion for the calf attachment. I hit the top of travel before full flex. Keeping the back at 90degrees helps, but is not perfect. Overall, the machine is smooth and easy on the joints +1. Again, thanks.

@HomeGymHacksandReviews
@HomeGymHacksandReviews 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve never tried to attach a super high tension band, just the red minis (like I show in this video) and the greens. One option would be to lower the sled all the way down. Attach the bands. Then get on the sled and push it back to one of the 3 starting positions. Probably not the best thing for the machine so try at your own risk.

You mentioned the compact sled was great for quads, but can you also target your glutes by adjusting your foot placement? Similar to a high stance on a traditional LP? Also, would both machines allow for full range of motion for someone who is only 5’2”? Thank you! I appreciate your reviews!
@HomeGymHacksandReviews

Thanks so much! I really don’t think the Leg Press or Sled is great for glutes or hamstrings (no matter foot placement). I think there are far better ways to work both those muscle groups. @blazefury8336
@blazefury8336 Жыл бұрын
Great video! I keep looking at leg presses, but can't decide on one I really like. I'm not sure the compact ones would offer enough true resistance after doing the math. Most of them are 30 degrees and around 700 lbs. capacity = sine (30 degrees) X 700 = 350 lbs. max resistance on the muscles while regular leg presses are 45 degrees and 1000 lbs. capacity so sine (45 degrees) X 1000 = 707 lbs. I think the compact leg press will feel slightly harder up until a point because you are also lifting your own bodyweight. I'm weary of buying another Powertec piece after all the quality control issues I've had with the equipment I've bought from them. I'd say they've been slightly worse on quality control than Titan. The Powertec foot plate on the regular leg press looks so much better than most home gym leg presses though.
@HomeGymHacksandReviews
@HomeGymHacksandReviews Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! This video is over a year old and everything I said in this video still holds true. If I could only have one of these, it would be the Sled. I think it’s more lower back, smaller footprint and I like being over the weight. However, I am probably in the minority; I think most people would pick the LP. I could handle 700 pounds on the Sled but that same weight was certainly harder on the LP. For the money, it’s going to be hard to find another LP that matches the quality and price of the LP. As for quality issues, I really haven’t seen anything major; and I’ve had a lot of Powertec equipment. Also, Powertec has always been good about resolving the few minor issues I have experienced. However, I understand your reservation. Good luck making your decision.
@blazefury8336
@blazefury8336 Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Most of the issues I've had with their quality have been minor and fixable/usable, though the levergym, I've been injured a few times. Now it is mostly fine, but my foot plate came with metal shredding's allover it. I kept thinking I had gotten them all off, but kept having to pull metal splinters out of my feet, but I'm pretty sure it is fine now as it hasn't happened in awhile. Then there was one of the attachments I bought, that had a quarter inch metal shard sticking out of the weight horn that cut my hand open as I was building it. I ended up sanding it down and now it is fine. Most of the issues I've had don't effect the function too much, but mess with my OCD. Like the bench when connected is closer to one side than the other so I end up pressing with a closer grip on one side. I do wish they had band pegs on their leg press. I find bands really useful for breaking through plateaus.
@HomeGymHacksandReviews
@HomeGymHacksandReviews Жыл бұрын
@@blazefury8336 I agree. I would like to see a band feature on all of their products. Interesting; I’ve never had an issue like the ones you describe…other than, on my first Multipress, the bench was positioned closer to one handle than the other.

I wonder if Powertec could make the calf block more like the letter “L” than a “T” that way the block would extend further down towards the bottom instead of just up and out sideways. Not sure if I’m explaining it correctly. If you rotated the current calf block 90 degrees then the top of the “T” would be pointing to the bottom. The top too but ignore that lol I’m saying just make a calf block that will sit lower on the deck. :)
