Today we take a close look at the details of, and differences between two of our rapier hilts. These are both replicas of Italian originals from the late 16th century, but also have considerable design differences.
The first is our Lombardy Rapier:

The second is our Italian Three Ring Rapier:

As always, our swords are entirely made by us at our shop in Minneapolis, MN out of 6150 carbon steel, hardened and tempered to 50-52 Rockwell. Our swords are made to look, feel, and function just like the historical originals on which they are based.

Thanks for doing this - it's neat to be able to see the guards from all sides without the swords in the way.

I think your Lombardy rapier is a beautiful rapier....I love the pommel with the indented or filed lines. If I had the $$$ I definately would buy one from you. Your Work is Amazing!

The Italian is AVB Norman Type 61 Nathan, and apparently 1600-1640. And I would say the Lombardy would pre-date it slightly ;-)

Have you guys ever done a video about that cool fireplace and the swords hanging from it? Thanks

We haven't. it's actually the surround from a pipe organ that was in a church that our President, Chris Poor used to own.

also what wood species do you recommend for sheaths? or ones to stay away from - I am beginning one with just a poplar board from the local big box

popular is good, its tough to say one type of wood is best as they used several in period.

not related to this video - but how much tang to blade ratio do you think is best for polearms - the choppy kind like glaive, bill, halberd - - not sockets - finding a broach for handles was difficult, and for longer tangs I have not seen one (I dont have the facilities to make my own)

hmm...these were usually socketed in period. not sure where you'll find a broach that big.

@@armsarmorinc.4153 Thanks - I was thinking of Japanese and other non-European tanged polearms - some seem to be fairly long, quite a bit longer than the head (choppy part)
