back then people having a laptop itself was pretty cool.. even the lowest end laptops would run you about 600-700 dollars. which is around 800 today. weird how times have changed.

@@budgerigarer Vista killed off all of those. Vista requirements were 1GB ram and 15gb storage but in my experience it runs best on 4gb ram, 256mb video memory, and at least 64gb storage.

@@sdcardp212 Netbooks existed through the Vista era, they only died in around 2012. Remember Windows 7 starter? That was a version specifically designed for netbooks. Netbooks just skipped running vista and throughout that era they all still ran XP. But there were many Windows 7 netbooks.

They are basically the same but some of their icons are different (such as UAC shield and Local Area Connection icon)

Vista and Windows 7 are the same OS. Windows 7 is Vista without bugs, they have the same kernel anyway.

@@NguyenTran-mf9gj Actually the accurate description would be that 7 is a rebranded Vista and Vista with SP2 and all main updates installed doesn't really have bugs, Windows 7 was mostly a rebrand since the bad reputation Windows Vista had for having issues specially on certain computers and being intensive to run at the time.

I like Vista's theme better tbh. 7's theme feels like a kid friendly version of Vista's, kinda like it's a less "edgy" version of it.

While 7 has a more consistent interface with apps like Paint using the new interface, Vista’s prominent use of teal is what still makes it visually appealing to me. So 5 stars for Windows 7’s UI consistency, but 5 stars for Vista’s UI look.

True Vista actually isn't that slow, it was just released ahead of time for more faster PCs, which little amount of users had at the time

Then many complaints about the many bugs and issues it had, but every software release that too such a big change has a lot of bugs, it gets fixed over time, Windows simply renamed Windows Vista, 7, and fixed the bugs that early adopters experienced and then Windows 7 became everyone's favorite.

@@Ivedotwav I've never had any issues with vista Sp2. I've ran both 7 and vista on a Pentium 4 HT with 4gbs of ram, ati x300 and surprisingly Vista ran better.

​ @Windows 7 @8.1DEV Interestingly enough, there's more to it than what (I'm an active windows 8 user [both 8 and 8.1 versions i daily drive] so, the obvious aside, you can't win+t in any metro environment on windows 8, while on windows 8.1 you can. in windows 8, there's no metro calculator plus some healthy livestyle ones [in 8.1 there are] but there's a messaging app [in 8.1 there isn't] and onedrive is still called skydrive, a reference to windows live's skydrive. There was a tweak on the taskbar buttons hover animation, and while on windows 8 the maximize-minim​ize animation is still the 3d one from windows 7, it is replaced in windows 8.1 . The taskbar is more transparent in windows 8.1, while being more to the opaque and monotonous side on windows 8. The view desktop button while invisible in both versions, it's narrower in windows 8.1 than windows 8 [the 8.1's one is the same as in windows 10. The navigation options on the taskbar now allow on 8.1 to view store apps on the taskbar, to place said store apps last on the start screen, and to go to desktop instead of the start screen at log in. In windows 8.1 you have more sizes to the start menu tiles, some icons and interfaces for default store apps were redesigned from 8 to 8.1 [for example, the store was redesigned on the icon, while settings was fully revamped with more options from the control panel being here]. You can now turn off the computer and change the metro [secondary color, defaultly seen as the windows 8 purple] from the start screen and search from desktop in 8.1, with more wide results. Also, the store apps now have their own black title bar, not affected by the DPI, with centered text, plus the minimize and close buttons [giving us said possibility instead of swiping to close], in windows 8.1 In terms of multitasking, the desktop part is the same on both OS's, while in the metro side of the spectrum, you have now 3 options to place de separator, and if you placed desktop on windows 8, something weird happened: a vertical list of the programs with thumbnails appear, you have to choose the one you want to open. That's gone in windows 8.1, with a narrower desktop view appearing. Now, on the theme side, there's being a nature theme available on windows 8, while removed in 8.1 and being replaced with the shapes and colors one. The default wallpaper changed from a pair of blue sky daisy flowers background in windows 8, to an abstract view of 3d orange objects in windows 8.1. And finally, the NT version in 8 is 6.2, 8.1 is 6.3. And windows 8's build is 9200, windows 8.1's 9600 [yes, they took 400 builds just to apparently go from no start button to there being one, but if you read the above, you'll see why ...]. I hope this richly detailed and extense comment was able to make you see all the differences i could spot in these seemingly identical OS's. And don't worry, I did save this comment on a notepad.

I remember vividly how on my older PC, Search was instantaneous on 8.0 and it slowed down tremendously with 8.1 8.0 and the Consumer Preview specifically were both the fastest and lightest versions of Windows since XP in my honest opinion.

I can verify. The only browser I can get to work on VIsta SP2 is the 592 Extended Support version of FIrefox, and it has some limitations like not showing Brave search results properly. Google Chrome and Internet Explorer are non functional. Besides browsers, even Steam became unusable on connecting, and with it most of the installed games. There is at least one video on KZfaq of how to trick applications into thinking VIsta is the next version of NT (Windows 7) and then get most things working again. But short of 'hacks', it's about dead. I'm contemplating writing a linux distro over the drive.

because apparently it was buggy and slow, and also was then-notorious for UAC; if you clicked any program, the computer would stop and go black for a few seconds so that a popup would appear asking you if you want to run the program; but really they aren't really valid criticisms; the reason it was buggy was because computer manufacturers were too lazy to properly optimize their drivers to work on vista, and it was slow because, like every new software out there, its system reqs were quite high, and people installed them in computers that didn't meet those reqs, thinking that since it could run an OS from the beginning of the decade (XP), it would run just fine, but nope; windows 7 was released a couple of years later with similar system reqs, but ironically wasn't criticized for being slow, because by that time computers had already gotten powerful. Also, UAC was criticized a lot back then, but it still remains to this day on windows releases, with no one even caring at all. so ye there's my vista yapping, and TL;DR its because of ignorant people, its actually a great OS
