The funny thing about the dab is that when it was popular, it was only done mainly by people younger than 30, but when it finished being popular, it was suddenly done by all the adults over 40, trying to look cool, causing only a big amount of cringe to everyone.
@daz1676
@daz1676 2 жыл бұрын
I think the over 30s saw it as cringey when the younger ones were doing it, then started to do it sarcastically to mock them. This happens with a lot of trends but the younger people dont seem to realise that the older people aren’t actually behind, they are just mocking them.

How could everyone forget about 2014 ice bucket challenge? It’s not cringe because it was related to a charity, but when you don’t know the backstory, it looks weird. Also some things like duck lips and the mirror selfies started in 2011 and already then it was cringe.

I really want to live the tech era of 2000-2010. Just something feels weirdly peaceful. Its probably just nostalgia and for the part i am from 2005, but even with the trend of Liminal spaces now being a thing, I really want to go there even more.

It was more organic, it was more decentralized, like independent forums and chats where people passionate about the same things can chat and share ideas freely, plus gaming was so much bigger, even shitty games had big player bases back then. Now it's all collected into a few go to places like Google, Fb, Ig, Yt, Tt... and nothing more, even if this places offer some kind of sharing of ideas between users, the algorithm is not organic, it favors certain topics and views in line with the company, that makes it feel empty. Now about gaming, more and more people are using their phone to play, and for that reason play shitty games which are not designed to have an engaging player base, but to extort as much money as possible from you with micro transactions...

I’d rather just live in the early 2000s when the only tech was computers and chat forums and no smartphones and social media. Even though smartphones come with a lot of conveniences life was freer without them and social media didn’t fuck up the world.

I'd argue the comedy ringtones started way back when we had brick-shaped Nokias, anyone remember Crazy Frog? Similarly the Peace Sign was a very hippy thing, though it's apparently a permanent fixture among Japanese Schoolgirls, rather than being time-specific. I also remember Yo-yos came back in when I was in middle-school, plus all the other trends, Tamagotchi, Pokemon Cards, fitted baseball caps, Pogs, charity bracelets, those charity banner magnets people put on their cars, ripped jeans, or if you were young in the 90s, Lisa-Frank school supplies and Trapper Keepers. Maybe I'm just showing my age.
@user-kf5mg1xl9w
@user-kf5mg1xl9w Ай бұрын
Peace sign is not among japanese school girls only is between girls in japan and china from all ages i think it stopped once they reach 40s though is a common thing, most things that were popular in america is a trend in Japan till this day, Ricer cars were a thing back 00s with fast and furious japanese call it american customs and they still popular till this day
@fleetingimmersion
@fleetingimmersion Ай бұрын
@@user-kf5mg1xl9w I'd put forth the notion that ricer cars pre-dated that Fast and Furious movie (though it no doubt introduced the culture to way more people). I think ricer culture was around largely in part to Hondas and other small Japanese cars being affordable and reliable for teenagers who were just starting to drive. And what does a teenager want to do once they have a car and can make it to their part-time job? Make it go faster, of course, and that's why a lot of these cars have healthy aftermarket support and lots of mods. If anything, that movie just introduced that culture to people that are older and already have their Ford or Audi, and either left their ricer days behind, or never had them (depending on age). As for the peace signs, I may have learned it from editorials in the early 2000s, so a bit old, but English teachers in Japan would say they could bring out a digital camera, and every schoolgirl in the vicinity would put up peace signs and their toes would move together (pigeon toed, they called it) because that was 'the style' for photographs at the time. I know not whether it's been replaced or lingered, however.

Or sometimes, a trend becomes cool due to a strange yet careful blend of both irony and non-irony. Sometimes the two are mixed just perfectly together to where you really just don’t know. Is the trend ironic? Has the trend become so ironic that the meter has done a full 360 loop, rendering said trend post-ironic? Should society simply accept what they like and get rid of the label of irony? Or does irony hold a special nostalgic place in our collective consciousness? Is this whole paragraph designed to be an ironic take on the over-complication of the subject of irony? Or is it an unironic take on the over-simplification of the subject? Or am I just bored?

Beards, is very common nowadays, but in the 90s and 00s, almost NOBODY had it. From memory on the streets I cant remember seeing bearded ppl. It was very rare. If you saw a bearded guy chances was that he could be a bum, homeless etc. Even on my 2003 football videogame I remember that no player had a beard, only a few had goatees, and rare ones a mustache, full beard!? None in the entire game of many teams. Now everybody has, a girl I knew some months ago said she liked bearded guys, ppl tend to follow trends and even the opposite sex learn to follow the taste..

🤣🤣🤣 This one always makes me laugh. It may have been appropriated by ignorant hippies in the 60s but it comes from the 1940s as the Victory sign. Following a broadcast from the BBC in 1941, resistance groups all over occupied Europe were told to chalk it on buildings and on the streets, and to paint it wherever they could as a symbol of defiance, of freedom, and of final victory. When the US joined the war in December 1941, the sign was adopted and put to use in support of the military, in recruitment programmes and in propaganda campaigns. It means the opposite of "peace" - it means patriotism and gaining Victory through military means!

They probably knew that because they were sons of the ppl who lived the ww2 era... they just changed the meaning because it fit a better and new reason, besides there wasn't a ww2 anymore. I knew this too as Im an amateur historian for a long time, ww2 is my favorite topic. Still the sign is a good one, times change, and peace fits better than anything, no ignorant person or most girls will care about the ww2 meaning of this well know hand sign, its a good trivia but they just wanna do it with the peace meaning so be it, it doesn't harm anyone.
