Note: « The Terminator (1984) 2160p, Ai-Upscaled from a complete 1080p Blu-ray ISO. I then increased the framerate from the default 24fps, to 60fps via SVP 4 PRO + TensorRT RIFE 4.14v2

Some of the scenes are impressive, but the upscaling scrubs the grain. Everyone looks waxy and artificial. Cameron would approve.

I just hope that whoever does it, they keep James Cameron far away from it. Ideally I would have liked Arrow Video to do it. It's right up their alley genre-wise, they have a deal with MGM currently and their Blu-rays include original audio tracks.

True. Seems like the AI treats real footage as ''graphics'' footage. This would make virtual footage (games) looks damn good but for actual humans and environnements, it would need some kind of actual cinematographer input to learn and get that crisp touch to not go too artificial

The 2013 remaster would be pretty much perfect if it didn't suffer from the Orange-and-Teal colour changes. It's like they went back and made it look like Terminator 2. I'm not a fan of the AI version presented here either: it removes too much detail, including all the film grain, and characters' skin is scrubbed of fine pores and other aspects (see Arnold's hand or Lance Henriksen's face), while deepening wrinkles and adding contrast where it didn't exist originally. As others have noted, it leaves an artificial impression, like a computer game. The scenery and machinery does look sharper in the AI version, but I just want a 4K scan of the original, grain and flaws included 😁 I do appreciate the effort, though, and thanks for putting out the comparison video 😊

I actually saw this in theater last week from 35mm and i was totally blown away how effective that old dirty print was. It was like watching it the very first time. Now none of these prints look right to me!

Skynet is remastering our movies lol Some shots look great but the human closeups look a bit fake. Maybe it’ll better in motion idk. Good work as always Moon!

Not made my mind up about these AI upscales and I won’t until I see them but I’m definitely in two minds about them. One one hand it looks great but on the other it looks kind of artificial/fake/smooth/video game-like. I do however think that the 2013 Blu Ray already looks great and from this comparison I’d rather see that restored in 4k hdr which would be a better overall result?

AI upscale may look waxy, but it is a faithful sharpening of the the original image. What I don’t understand is what is going on with Cameron’s approved AI remasters, where there are scenes with fine detail that’s completely new, not merely noise removal and edge sharpening. How are they doing that? Those next gen algorithms are already surfacing, where it really makes up detail from learned sources. Makes you think there are more interesting creative ways to train these models than simply “faithful” restoration of old stuff

Each of these have their pros and cons -The 2006 release has that dirty film look which some may appreciate, and has the original color timing -the 2013 release has the best overall quality, a clean print with film grain intact, tho with new caneron-esque color timing -The AI upscale does provide a nice boost in sharpness, albiet at the cost of the film grain..

Is the upscale on disc ? I think it looks awesome, what you loose in grain-fine detail is more than made up with beautiful contrast and colour.

Part of the grit of Terminator is the film grain. Getting rid of it lessons the dystopian cinematography.

You're certainly right to point out that cinematically, grain is essential to films in general. However, it is a technological progress that must be accepted or not in my opinion. Because in reality if we want to go in this direction, that is to say increase the resolution, we must also accept that in reality, our eyes do not see any grain and therefore, what I show in this video, perhaps gives the answer is future technology that will undoubtedly take a long time to accept but that one day we will have to admit that it is that and not otherwise. Just look at the history of cinema and the technology used for over 100 years. There is neither evil nor scandal in all this. It's just a matter of taste and stylistic and artistic preference. And it shouldn't be surprising that there are directors who are taking this direction because I think it's the way to go if you want to achieve better visual qualities. I don't like the remastered blu ray, it looks glossy. The original blu ray is more balanced. I dig the 4k upscale but I'm going to be super disappointed if the official release leaves out the mono audio yet again

All I wish is for the 4k to be struck from the 2008 blu ray, it's the most closest looking to how it was shown theatrically. The colour timing is all wrong for The remastered version and the AI version just looks worse

Very interesting comparison! A.I. version add much in term of sharpness and contrast which is super, but in the other hand, remove to much grain, which is very bad so all surfaces look way to clean, waxy style, specially looking at the mountains in the last image.

My choice is the 4K AI upscaled version.Not comparing to 2006 version and Remastered version.

Who is making these A.I. upscales, and what software are they using, as it does not look like any commercially available software I have used. The results are far more natural, and have none of the usual artifacts. Almost like somebody has rescanned the negative, and not used A.I. whatsoever…

The AI looks terribly plasticky, oversharpened and unnaturally smooth. All the organic grain, fine details have been removed. It's a travesty. The 2013 edition looks to be the best of the bunch, image quality wise. i am not an expert on the colour timing though.

I tend to prefer the 2013 master (I have the 2015 Lionsgate Blu-ray). Yes it is slightly cyan-shifted but it's not abusive.

A.I upscaling makes it look like the cgi Arnold from Salvation. I'd rather keep the blu ray we have than that, looks like utter arse.

Well, that's just awful.. The teal and orange look nearly every movie today receives is just wrong.. Absolutely sure we will get a new color grade for many movies in a couple of years. Also, the upscale version looks so bad in many shots.. Like a waxy or Aquarelle version of the movie. The punks at the beginning even recieved plastic hairs with that upscale
