This is a compilation of the "Izumiotsu Danjiri Festival" held in Izumiotsu City, Osaka Prefecture over two days: Saturday, October 7, 2023, and Sunday, October 8, 2023.
This year again, spectacular Kachiai Festivals were held in the Hamahachi towns of Shimono-machi, Kamiichi, Kaminomachi, Motomachi, Miyamoto-machi, Tanaka-machi, Deyashiki, and Nishino-machi.
Izumiotsu Hamahachi Town falls under the former Otsu Village of Senboku District, and the type of danjiri is divided into an eclectic type, the upper danjiri, which is held for two days in October mainly at Otsu Shrine on the west side of the Nankai Main Line.
It is held in eight towns: Nishinomachi, Shimonomachi, Kamiichi, Kaminomachi, Motomachi, Miyamotocho, Tanakacho, and Deyashikicho (Otsu Shrine).The festival is famous for the ``Kachiai'' where Danjiri floats collide with each other. On the day of the festival, many people visit Izumiotsu to see the powerful "Kachiai".
In addition, the carvings of lions on most upper danjiri plates are generally called Shigami, but in Izumiotsu Hamahachi-cho they are called Onikuma.
In 1785 (Tenmei 5), Kitamachi (present-day Kitamachi, Kishiwada City), located in Kishiwada Castle, purchased a large danjiri from Udaatsu Village, but it was unable to pass through the castle gate. This led to the creation of danjiri with elaborate pillars in Kishiwada the following year, and it is said to have evolved into the Kishiwada-style danjiri (lower danjiri).
