I still can't get used to hearing CN going through the Eldson sub Growing Up near evergreen Park that was always GTW. But of course the easement that Canadian national allowed for CSX to utilize but it's still strange to hear some 10 plus years

I used to live right next to a single track main that connected a dual track main and a busy rail yard. It was constantly busy until Conrail was dissolved and the track was taken over by CSX. Now it’s seldom used.

I've never heard such quiet diamonds. I never heard of this place before. I waited for the new CPKS engines. I'm not sure what the letters are. I'm almost 80. Jan. 9, 2024. St.Joseph, MO. I love structures and construction almost as much as the trains. Surprised to see Iowa line with newly painted engines.

Growing up in 70s we lived by a huge rail yard by UofL. Seems like 50 tracks or more. Our house was the 2nd from the road that was next to all the tracks. Probably 200 feet or less. Best sleep you can get is next to the tracks.

Blue Island has a chronic problem that the streets are almost always blocked by a train. It got to the point where the city had to file lawsuits against the railroads. The Canadian railroads taking over more of the tracks around Chicago and more efficient routing of rail cars has eliminated much of the congestion that used to back up in the switching railyards. One train being unable to get into a full yard would quickly cascade into trains for other railroads 100 miles being stuck with crews running out of time. The south side of Chicago also had a chronic problem of nearby residents looting the trains. If the train stopped for any reason, the cars would get broken into within minutes. That would require police to show up to investigate, which would further detain the stopped train, creating more chaos. I'm describing how it was in the early 1990s. The arrival of containerized traffic has probably reduced that quite a lot, since the doors on the lower container can't be opened without lifting the container off of the rail car

Hey I see your also a fan of China railway too from your profile picture, as a Kid I rode on the DF4s a green one Kunming to Beijing in coach seat class for few stops in Yunnan, and once an orange DF4 from Shenzhen to Kunming in sleeper cab 3 days, and a SS3 coach seat Kunming to Shanghai a few stops in Yunnan, I'll always love the old Chinese locos, not so much their squatting toilets though that dumped on the tracks, but anyways nice catch of the diamond junction

looking at google earth. looks like lots of possibility's for train cams, in that larger area. is that harbor line called the pumpkin line? who controls the target towers there? maybe if done right. can get in some cams? heck by that house, turn it into a rail museum. and hire me on as a 24 hr care taker. but would need a computer guru to set up the cams and web access. say 10 cams for just right there at the diamond?
