Tom, I know you won’t see this but if you do, I’m so jealous that you still get to farm and spend time with your Dad! Please Please cherish it, you won’t regret it. I would give almost anything to spend a day cutting hay with my dad. I get to do it with my son, and I hope he feels the same someday. Wishing you and your family nothing but the best, and thank you for letting us be in your lives! A humble haymaker from western Pennsylvania USA.

I will give you a pro tip, Tom, it is also low cost to keep things like this from happening, load up a car, fourwheeler or tractor with orange electric fence poles, or take white ones and put a orange flag on them with something, so they are clearly visible After every cut, you put them up at stones and stuff like you hit, and it will never happen to you again, we farmed the same farms since the 60´s and it never happened to us after we started doing that as a tip from another farmer

Great idea an isolated object in the middle of the field when I was learning to glide when approaching to land we were advised not to aim at the lorry towing the winch cable back up the airfield however being human even on a completely empty airfield the lone Lori always ended up as the target to which you aimed for without even thinking about it it takes a lot to concentrate not to aim your glider at the tow truck. The same will probably apply to loan electric fence poles stuck in the middle of the hayfield

No no! The problem is the Mower, Tom! The best crop to feed cattle is fermented manhole covers, of course a mower should be able to eat a nice manhole cover to provide feed, otherwise it is no good :D

The mower damage can happen to anyone when the manholes are unmarked. It happens. However, you need to put some flags/markers on those manholes to prevent the visibility problem, so they aren’t hidden by the tall grass surrounding them in your fields.

Your suggestion are good but I can see a problem. While I’ve never mowed a hay/Silage, I have reaped/harvested (peas, barley, wheat, etc.) grains and trying to jocks around poles and fences off area are a pain. What I would suggest is a brightly colored pole in line with the drains at either end of the field. That way they would remember to set the Linkage higher for that row. It would keep poles out of the middle of the field so they could keep a good rhythm. That’s the way we did things out in Washington state, US. I’m not sure if their tractors can raise and lower the cutting blades while in motion like ours can. Compared to the tractors/harvesters they use here on our farms yours are smaller. He admits to theirs being a small farm. Out in the Palouse Empire of Washington our smaller farms are about 2000 to 3000 acres, I’m not sure what is common in your area of the world.

Hey Tom. I reckon you should bring Euan along more often as he has the perfect timing of a "straight man" for a comedy duo and has obviously had seriously in depth training in how to deliver lines with heavy sarcasm and irony (probably due to growing up on a working farm with "working words" like the Ginger Warrior proved he could utter) 😎😂. Also you could try and persuade Joanna to get in front of the camera a little more often (maybe to show you up a little 😁...). Apart from seeing her delight at doing well, it is great to see her confidence doing "farming things" improve over time... By the way you are lucky you are only due some heavy rain on the cut grass. We had a 15 acre paddock (many years ago) that was cut, then heavily rained apon. tedded once, rained on again and then overnight was blown off the paddock up against the eastern fence before it could be (small) baled. We didn't get a good result from that crop but there was a lot more uncut grass on other paddocks.

In the snow country we put thin orange stick markers at curbs and other buried hard items so snow plows do not hit them, they stick 3 or 4 feet up. Given your grass is awesomely high maybe they will work for your manholes.

Tom, life and jobs don't always go to plan, even for the best of people, your dad is a marvelous man for his age, his get up and go attitude is scarce in society, to do an all night shift up to 6am, a couple of hours rest and then go back out again and carry on, that what he is used to, he can't retire, it's not in his blood, hard working man, you are the same as your dad, hard grafter,, great to see you letting your partner learn the tractor and mowing operations, it would not have happened 20 or 30 years ago, even less, it's great to see not like years ago, michael IRELAND [EIRE]

Flag those obstacles. Look at getting the bigger mower. Neighbor had an 8 ft discbine and he needed a 80 hp tractor, we had a 12 ft sickle haybine and did the job with a 72 hp tractor. One day we were in similar size fields next to each other and got in there at the same time. He traveled 8 mph and we went 5 mph. We both cut up and down after making the handland passes. We finished first, because there was 50 % less turns, in spite of going 60% slower. We had far less fuel consumption and a smoother ride too. :)

Thanks for sharing this. Love watching you and the Ginger Warrior in the tractors burning some diesel. AND, best of all, you are willing to use yourself as an example of paying attention and not just nodding along. The groundskeepers at the school I worked at used to walk the fields before mowing and would put in little hazard flags by drains etc. I know this rare for you, but others might want to think about something like that. Great to see as always.

This is the first video of yours I've seen, You live in a beautiful area in England! With a great family! Its awesome to have spare equipment around to borrow in a pinch! Especially with all the rain you get, we do not have that issue, once you start Haying, you go until your done! Thats not that way over here in the U.S. Most everyone has to have spare parts, because farm equipment all seems to be used at the same time! There is very little farming left around my area in Connecticut! Mainly the old Dairy farmers, older children just keeping up with mowing their fields, for feed for beef cows. Some still doing sweet corn. Smart ones also make good hay for the Horse people, they are nuts over here about what they feed there horses, that do nothing 🙄🙄🙄🙄! Thank the lord they haven't sold their family's hard earned Farms! It is also nice to see you bringing family out to learn the operation, & not having to be 100% politically correct, which I think is BS 😂😂😂😂! What the hell are those man holes doing in the middle of your fields? I'm guessing they are for drainage, or electricity?👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I feel your pain! I did the same last year with our Krone easycut, found a cast iron manhole. I was mad at myself for ages.

Don’t beat ya sen up Tom about the mower. We all have messed up on such occasions and no one is perfect. Iv hit a man hole cover before and cost me £thousands but best thing is to learn from mistakes and I did by making the cover obvious with cones on top so easy to see. Good vid and looking forward to the chopping one 😁

The person that doesn’t make mistakes hasn’t been born . We just need to learn from the mistake and move on , being down and depressed definitely don’t help . It’s normally when someone has told you about a hazard that’s when it happens.

Don’t worry about hitting the cover (it’s done now) Tom, just learn from it. You definitely won’t do it again!!

Well Tom I agree with everyone in the comments that stuff like that happens even when we’re careful I’ve done things similar in my field so you’re not alone. Just forgive yourself and move on which I’m sure you’ve done. Ginger guy provided solid humor is always wish we would’ve gotten his reaction to the pothole incident. Have a great week see you all Friday. Be well be you

Even when you are looking, they are very hard to see in tall grass. Fiberglass rods with a flag might help.

Been there Tom, been that angry with myself for flailing a manhole on a field margin. My punishment was being sent out with a fence post and sledge hammer to mark it for the next person! You need to step up to a ‘R’ series JD to get a comfier passenger seat 😉 A roll of Rescue Tape/fusion tape is a good ‘get out of jail’ for a quick fix on hydraulic and water pipes.
