Complete Review of Offroad Electric Bike - Is it Legal on the Road?
AllOffroad 4x4 Adventures TV
A little unusual review but when Engwe contacted me and asked if I wanted to review one of their Electric "off-road" e-bikes I was intrigued. So here is my unbiased review of the Engwe Engine PRO 750W Off Road Electric Bike. In this review, I take a closer look at the features and performance of this electric bike, which is supposedly designed for off-road adventures and thrill-seekers.
The Engwe Engine PRO comes with a powerful 750W motor, quality components, and a durable construction, but it is really built to handle tough terrains and provide a smooth and enjoyable ride.
I'll dive deeper into the bike's design, ease of use, and performance on various terrains, so you can determine if it meets your needs. I also explore if it actually conforms to Australia NSW e-bike regulations and if you can legally ride it on public roads.
So, let's get started and explore the Engwe Engine PRO electric bike!

Love the accent! Your honesty is such a relief. I am more convinced of buying this product thannks to your honesty about the cons and the negatives. Other videos where selling it like its a miracle, flawless ebike... I ignored buying it because of those "scam" reviews. Now that I feel like I know all the possible negatives, I will easily fix them myself and own this ebike happily and for many years. Thank you for your honest work.

Thanks for the review! The laws are definitely behind the times. The government screams sustainability but then over regulates to a point where it discourages people from taking things up like cycling 😢

I ended up going for the kristall rx20 in Australia. Alot of the issues stated aren't an issue with the kristall. I just had to fit my own stabilizer for the fenders.

I had the exact same issues with the Engine X (Same Frame) with the mudguards and chain catching. Also had a flat rear tyre when recieving it. Turns out the rear tyre issue was due to the valve within the Schrader valve that was not tighened up. I used the tool you get with the inner tube slime kits to sort that out and its been fine since. On the Engine X i have not been able to disable that annoying cruise control on the controller. There are no options for it 😔

Your point about over regulation is absolutely true. E bikes and scooters have had to push enforcement to the limit where the law has to change otherwise police become overwhelmed and the law is ignored. That is the situation in London right now. Delimited e-bikes are everywhere. Once the law loses public credibility, it ceases to exist.

Many pedestians have been seriously injured by ebikes. If you injure some one with your ebike, you better make sure that bike is 100% legal.

Very good review. The chain issue is completely buried, no one has pointed that out. Thanks! For you Aussies, you can go into the settings and set a max speed (each country has a different legal speed) that may help avoid a ticket.

First time viewer, only on my feed because of this content. Excellent review imho, as I haven't seen the chainline issues mentioned anywhere before although the opposite brake lever L and R swap is well known. Yes the legislators need to get a wriggle on and get with the times as I think personal electric transport has so much to offer and yet the imposed trials are laughable here in the UK. Anyway sorry, I'm starting to rant. More power to you, keep up the good work..

Great, honest review. I bought an e-bike last month and before purchasing it I wasn’t aware of the legalities and didn’t know until my first ride that I’d bought the de-tuned Australian model with a 250w motor and electric only mode cut out around 6km/h. Quite frustrating really, when the same model bike sells in the US with a 750w motor and a top speed over 50km/h. In practice though, it has made it a very enjoyable bike to ride. Less jerky than what people overseas report on their more powerful models, and a lot more progressive. Makes it a lot safer riding around people too. I notice someone commenting on 20” x 4” tyres not being available. Fortunately that’s simply not true, they’re easy to find here in Aus.

Great and honest review Stefan. As someone with more than just a small amount of bicycle experience… I would point out that no one in the country imports 20” x 4.0” tyres (hard enough to get 26” x 4. anything nowadays) We won’t even get into whether the bikes geometry and so on passes Australian Standards for safety etc. There is a reason why *genuine* eBikes cost what they do. They are properly designed and manufactured.

Hi would you ever think of doing a documentary on bill larmans he is just so amazing and has so much car knowledge. Would like to think it will some day get immortalise for the coming generations. He has reverlosionise leaf springs in 4wd applications and suspension in general. He is someone i look up to him for his amazing engineering feats and ability to work with tight bugets. to be as resourceful as possible. I aspire to one day be like him when i am old with a property full of cars and making some of the coolest cars ever and beating all the high tech big buget rigs. He has given me the land rover bug and aspired me to learn more about suspension geometry and one day build my own land rover. Hope to oneday have a conversation with him.

The Engwe Engine Pro will never be a true offroad bike like a MTB with 28"/29" tyres. The Engwe's small 20" wheels, plus its incorrect geometry, and hefty weight all adds to its lucklustre offroad capabilities. The Engwe is akin to a heavy SUV. Not a real 4WD. Interesting info about the legalities of these. Thanks for highlighting. 👍

oh just research that is new :-). Step in the right direction "Regulatory amendments occurred in February 2023 to enable the use of higher-powered electrically power-assisted bikes (e-bikes) to increase their permitted wattage to 500 watts (W) where the maximum continuous rated power cuts off when the device reaches a speed of 25km/h."

@AllOffroad 4x4 Adventures TV I've seen some that come limited to 250w and speed limited to 25km/h that you override by putting them into "offroad mode" with an app (which is a bit dodgy). The problem I see is that local councils have made a bunch of footpaths "shared spaces" where I really don't want people on bikes barrelling along at 40km/h.

Australia adopted the European regulations for ebikes. You'll find they are the same except helmets aren't compulsory in Europe. Mid drive ebikes are much better to ride than hub drive in my opinion. Every hub drive I've ridden has a lag on the uptake and a lag when you stop pedaling. This is not the case on mid drive bikes, the reaction to pedaling status is more or less instant. Also, mid drive bikes take advantage of the gears because the power assists before the gearing effect. The ideal off road ebike would have 26" fat tyres, a 48 volt 250 watt mid drive motor and have an 11 or 12 speed cassette that will climb up a wall, all perfectly legal. Try a mid drive bike and be amazed at the difference....my opinion only.

I set mine up to use throttle and pedal assist together. That way i can get the motor going quickly then when moving I can rely on pedal assist.
@mikehzz9848
@mikehzz9848 Жыл бұрын
@@ivana6141 The thing that's bad about hub drives and their cadence sensors is that the motor kicks right in at full speed even if you want to only go slow. It seems to want to get you to a certain speed according to the assist level. With a mid drive it has a torque sensor that reacts to how hard you push the pedals so the assist varies according to the pressure you're applying. I prefer the assist to be on the crank side of the gears as well as it means the motor is running in its sweet spot more often rather than labouring when you may be pedaling fast but going slow uphill which happens with a hub drive. Lets not forget that throttles are illegal on 250 watt bikes.

Great review. Yes there are many of these e-motorbikes around and I now realise that all of them with motors greater than 500-watts are illegal in NSW except on private property. This is regardless of whether or not the motor is restricted. I wrote to Transport for NSW for clarification.Transport NSW advice says that “the continuous rated power is a specification of the motor itself, and therefore it would NOT be legal to use an e-bike on NSW roads (or any public space for that matter) that uses a motor with higher power rating (than the legal 500 watt limit) even if it is limited by software, switch or other means”. And then of course having a throttle that works over 6 kph also makes the bikes illegal regardless of motor size. With the growing number of these e-motorbikes now on the road, especially with so many young children on them, there are going to be some large personal injury law suits with riders having no insurance houses could be lost to pay for them. Also as these are actually unregistered motor vehicles there are also going to be some hefty fines. The solution could be a class of registration that also has CTP insurance. These e-motorbikes are most definitely not bicycles.

yea I think government is as usual light years behind what’s really going on as you said so many driving them yet legislation is behind the technology
@gregmccarthycronulla

@@AlloffroadAu Yes agree and the real problem for the riders is that the bikes are in essence unregistered and uninsured (no CTP) e-motorbikes so could potentially cost the rider their house if they seriously injure a pedestrian or pillion passenger.

Thanks Stefan, certainly its illegal, but not only on public roads but also public spaces such as parks, fire trails etc. A large issue is insurance, as insurers will run a mile if it turns out that the bike is illegal. So any accident caused to persons or property involving an illegal ebike will leave the rider fully exposed. There are plenty of great EN15194 compliant offroad bikes available, perhaps try one of those next.

It has virtually no off road positive features because it’s designed for on road/urban use. Every e-bike seller knows the “off road, nudge nudge wink wink” routine they have to run through because the bikes are illegal to use on the road.

Definitely not a real off-road bike. The combination of its small diameter tyres, weight and tall handlebars makes for one unergonomic & unstable bike for off-road use. It seems the e-bike rules for NSW is to prevent (current & future) e-bikes turning into motorbikes with pedals. Authorities do not want people with any powerful motorised vehicle zipping around with no registration and insurance, that could seriously injure, or worse, kill others while being used.

Cars are sold that are capable of going over the speed limit. They also have different levels of power. EBikes and escooters are being unfairly targeted. Limiting the power unfairly disadvantages heavy fat people verses a light people. People would use these e-bikes more if they could commute and transport goods if it was comfortable and safe. Uber eats is a perfect example. Those bikes are technically not legal but evidence shows it provides a service efficiently, safely and fast. Yes some riders have done the wrong thing. Because some humans do it does not mean all humans do it.
