Bioware was way ahead of their time with Dragon Age and Mass Effect for sure. They're not here to tick your boxes. They're here to tell meaningful, realistic stories. No forced stereotypes. No sign of abnormality in regards to sexualities. No shoehorned coming out plot points. Just people. Just people in love, who are happy. That's where most romance subplots fail.

this is what most of games trying to show homosexual relationships get wrong. Cortez story and him telling us just casually "I lost my husband" feels so natural. Many movies and games feel so forced with gay/lesbian characters, Mass Effect got it right. Well written romance with no stereotypical bullshit that makes you cringe.

Shepard actually survives if you destroy the Reapers and you have high military strength. You just need the Extended Cut DLC. It adds a bunch of other stuff too.

Even if I was interested in Romancing him, the idea of romancing a grieving husband rubs me the entire wrong way, and when I just tried it for the lolz, all the exchanges post getting him off the Normandy made me feel castrating myself. It just...doesn't feel right.

Well, if you take the events of the full game into account, the club scene triggers very late in the game (before priority: Cerberus if I'm not mistaken. By that time, a lot of things happen and the crucible is almost ready. So this game probable took place in a span of a year or more (it doesn't feel that way to us players because of the game's pacing, but realistically thinking, it's a safe bet). So yeah, the greaving could have taken moths and with Shepard helping him, they get closer during that time.

@L'Inquisiteur I think it's like.. replacement? Infatuation. They use "New love" to counter their heartbreak. It's effective because it helps take your mind off your pain, and some people do projection onto their new partner, imagining that their partner is their deceased loved one.

Old com but you did'nt take in consideration that the world is ending. For example, during our war, couples were married in days/weeks. You can take strenght into another loved one. Living in the moment, not being alone in chaos, etc... I can understand how they come together. But like Thane, he is in pain and mourning... I get we can be unconfortable with their past love life.

+AmyLameY Oo Broadly guessing, 1/3 of ME players are female and much less of that are gay males. Even adding in the gay-friendly, that still pales next to the number of straight males wanting to see women. However Bioware does have a relatively diverse audience for AAA games. Also keep in mind that fresh ME3 romances don't get the attention - Sam may have the 88k views but that's more the shower scene rofl and the other romances are in the 100ks. Steve may have the least attention of the romances outside of the 'GAY MALE ROMANCE WITH COMMANDER SHEPARD?!?' controversy (Kaidan is relatively ignored about that), but there's several innocent factors about it.

Malcolm Swoboda I saw this one guy on YT he picked romance options with Cortez as a joke but the romance got locked in and liara rejected him, he was so pissed haha I guess you are right tho, plus factor in that when a lot of people saw the ending they were done with the series forever.

+Amy Kovac I'm a really open minded guy and I tried to play the games both as a female and a gay character in me3 to experience the "male" romance options but I found out I just can't go through with them and appreciate them enough since I'm heterosexual, I just can't find them compelling in any way, my brain just keeps telling me "This would've been a lot better if that guy was a female and this happened" and I'm sorry for myself to be honest.

Not me, Kaiden seemed a little forced to me considering there was zero sign of this in ME1 and 2. Cortez' wasn't perfect either, but after not romancing anyone thru all of ME1 and ME2, it was perfectly natural for Cortez to come along, and a long awaited release for my Shep.

I agree if you forget about Robert the romance is great but the thing is Robert is so integral to Steve's character and Shepard helping Steve get over him is one of the motivations for them to get together. I think it might have been a little bit better if they changed it around where Robert had been Steve's younger brother but that's my opinion.

Unless, of course, you've played Shepard this way from ME1. Ya know, it is possible to not romance anyone through ME1 and ME2. When I started ME3, I had no love interest baggage. Steve was my first love interest in all ME. So it was natural as hell for me.

After that he gets increasingly better as far as I'm concerned. But geez that intro felt strange. Could have done with a bit more diversity in his portrayal at first.
