Thanks charley, this is a very useful video right now, perhaps you have seen that we have had horrendous floods here and due to the hectic rain we have had, our roof in the garage has been leaking and a couple of spots in the house too……however as its a rented house, we have a local handyman coming in to put some waterproof membrane on with waterproof roof paint. Amazing how in repairing/upgrading the projects always seem to balloon into something akin to an expensive nightmare. This is where most people throw up their hands and either give up or bite the bullet and call in the pros. Kudos to you, Charlie, for sticking with it.

This really resonates, I’m half way through having my 320 square metre slate roof redone, and going from 16 PV 250W panels to 39 370W panels. Since I’m dealing with a 3 floor building below the roof line, it’s a job for the professionals. Definitely not cheap

Thanks Andrew. Blimey, you'll generate some serious electricity with 39 panels! I'm going with 16 415w panels, but that seems a long way off right now. 🤦🏻‍♂️

@@CharlieDIYte we need serious electricity to drive our 3 phase ground source heat pump. We have 500 square meters to heat, and a nice oversized hot water cylinder to dump any excess generation into

Trim the plastic edging to fit the last two battens. I've done this and it's fine. Also try and get a batten as close as you can to the edge to fix the facias and gutter mounts👍👍

Hi Charlie, thanks for the vid and good luck with the roofing job. On your solar PV plans, you can buy a kit and fit them yourself, along with the inverter. Its worth looking into expandable battery storage, and a hybrid inverter. I bought my kit back in Sept 2021 and haven't looked back , bought mine from a company called pluginsolar and though expensive is really worth it.

Thanks Gav. I'm sort of doing that because I bought the kit from a company in Yorkshire on the recommendation of a guy on my Discord forum. They don't install this far south so I'm installing the panels myself and then they're going to hook up the inverter for me and her everything connected. Conscious I've made a few mistakes and bought in rather to much haste but I panicked by the sudden national surge in interest. Just got the solar panels in time and am hoping the inverter and batteries come into stock soon...

@@CharlieDIYte That's brilliant, hope you get sorted out soon, there's understandably, a lot of demand at the moment. Re the inverter, the mistake I made, was that it could only pull 3.6kw out if the batteries, I wish I had invested in an inverter that was capable of providing more, as we can often draw more than that whilst cooking and have to draw the balance from the grid, even though the batteries are more than capable of providing the whole lot. Anyway, thanks for all the content you've provided over the years 👍

I have the bitumen underlay on my 1982 built house with Marley tiles. I moved in late 2019 and long story short hot water tank failed in the attic while I was offshore 20 days later. Artex on the celling, so insurance company wouldn't go in until that was removed due to asbestos. Settled with insurance in March 2020 in time for covid with a gutted house. I had paid out of pocket to get things moving, plasterboard and plaster was complete upstairs and the last of the storms hit. Water came in again through the roof. The wind blowing the rain under the tiles, and the bitumen felt was brittle and had ripped. No leaks since but have contemplated doing it myself. However costs have sky rocketed. Will probably get the main roof done by a roofer and do the garage and porch myself.

So sorry to hear about all this. You've been through it mate! I didn't realise artex had asbestos in it! You were very unlucky a second time as most of my roof doesn't even have underfelt and we get battered by the weather from the south, here! Hope you get the roof redone without too many more mishaps. Sounds like a good plan. I'll probably get a roofer to do my main roof at some point, unless I just tackle it gradually in sections.

@@CharlieDIYte The Bathrooms were only 5 years old apparently, so I was going to leave them. However pulling up the chipboard floor in the hall and master bedroom, I found it was all rotten from bathroom leaks, so ripped it out. I was showering at my folks or gym....Then lock down hit! I had a push on tap shower out the kitchen window. A bit cold still in March and luckily not overlooked by neighbours!!!

Well impressed at you sticking with that also to Mrs DIY for taking off those tiles. Hope she is also going to have a go and lead the rebuild. For the membranes did you look at Roofshield at all? Perhaps OTT for a garage but the only one that doesn't need a ventilated ridge (?) Interesting what you think of flimsy ventilated ridge systems. Don't forgot at the bottom to think about your kick up for the bottom tile - I guess you are doing new fascia boards. Surely you just trim those trays to fit. Look forward to the next one and take care. Can you get some inflatables for inside the garage just in case (thinking about possibility of rotten rafters).

Thanks John. I've decided to stick with the support trays and make a triangular timber tilt filler to support the tray. I thought it was my mod but I found out this morning that they are recommended in the industry. No, I'm afraid I didn't look at roof shield. You don't realise how many options there are until you start researching something like this and start receiving suggestions from good people like yourself 👍

For Roofshield have a look at the Restoration Couple when they did their roof: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z62jjcVo297HmmQ.html I guess you already know them but if not perhaps go an see them and volunteer on the new farm for a day in return for roofing tips. Hi Charlie, the only advice I can offer on any important job is go the extra mile on materials, give it the full belt and braces, and in the long run you won't regret it, I whish you luck whith it,and hope the weather's kind to you. What about adding Solar PV now, using in-roof mounting trays? You wouldn’t need to tile under them and nowadays panels themselves aren’t much different in price to roof tiles (per square metre). You could get the panels almost for free. Plus an in-roof system looks much better.

@@CharlieDIYte for precise information. Maybe worth talking to Jordan from Artisan Electrics (search KZfaq for his channel) or Oval Renewables via KZfaq too. Allen Hart another KZfaqr had a solar system fitted flush with his roof tiles 3 months ago, worth having a look at his video on that.

@@CharlieDIYte Yes, the trays fit most standard panels of about 1700 x 1000mm. You can get panels for about £150 each and a mounting tray for about £35. Offset that with about £70 saved on the tiles.

@@CharlieDIYte If you are ever short of video ideas or want to have one on file ready as a spare I think a video on your tower would actually be quite interesting for people. A lot of people won't consider buying such a tower but they might think about hiring one so an overview video of it, when and when not to use it, safety precautions needed etc would be excellent. I know I would be interested to see it.

Don't forget the sarking boards Charlie! There weren't any in those days but building standards these days require them, actually make the roof safer to be on too.

Charlie I'd also ask roof specialist Steve Roofer who seems to use Alutrix 600. Also if you are going to make it a habitable space will it be a cold or warm roof as this along with the new 202q building regs will impact on your choice of system for the roof.

Thanks Richard. Yes we've been discussing this on my Discord chat forum. It will be a cold roof so having a decent vapour barrier will be important. I should have checked Steve the Roofers recommendation. Such a good channel, that 👍

Charlie, having just taken half the cladding off my shed I've a tip to share on removing the roof battens. Rather than crowbar them off which will put strain on the wood and result in more fractures, use a multi tool with a carbide metal cutting blade to cut through the nails instead. The first side of my shed I crowbarred off and most of the wood split, the second side using the multitool I had far less damaged cladding lengths and was able to pretty much use them all again. Good idea, probably easier and quicker and cheaper in terms of blades to use reciprocating saw. A good blade and it will make very light work of that. Pretty sure Charlie has one from memory.

@@C4sp3r123 Yes a recip saw would also work. Maybe it's just my cheap recip blades but I find they can be too springy and so can go off track and cut into the wood. The multi tool blades are stiffer so can slice under the wood and into the nail. I'm using a Saxon metal carbide blade so they're not that expensive and so far I've not had to change the blade, and that includes having to cut through some brand new stainless steel rings ank nails when I got some of the new cladding wrong. Certainly can recommend Saxon blades from my recent experience

Routinely use a fine blade on a battery reciprocating saw to cut the nails in pallets

Have you decided how to get the new tiles lifted up into place? Those BUMPA tile hoists are an excellent hire, but will (I think) only lift up to your platform. Wonder if it’s possible to position the end on the actual roof so you can remain up there whilst a helper conveyors them up to you and moves along with you?

If you counter batten you can use the eps trays and aid ventilation.

I thought I could create a wedge to go on the rafters at the bottom. That way I can use the trays and the wedge will support them and stop them buckling when I fix that last batten. Does been the roof will slope at a shallower angle at the bottom but it eliminates the problem with that bottom batten sitting in a dip.

@@CharlieDIYte I would think a wedge would work fine as well, it could be made to be a longer wedge so the gradient change is more gradual rather than a much larger sudden change of angle at the bottom.

You would still need vents - ridge and eaves, as breathable underlay is not enough on its own if you plan to use as a 'house' later on.

That depends on the roof membrane i believe. Eg Tyvek Supro does not require any vents.

If you don't use vents then these breathable membranes require very careful execution of a vapour control layer in the room below.

I'm thinking about that. It will have the effect of angling upwards the last two tiles down by the eves but you do see that on roofs from time to time.

Charlie would you say diy is learnt by doing it or do you research and use books to aid understanding or is trial and error and experimentation the best approach to become more skilled with your hands?

Hi there. A combination of the two really. I often say in my vids, it's all in the preparation. The more you research, the more prepared you are for whatever you're doing and that's particularly the case for me. With most of my vids I'm doing something if not for the first time, then certainly with the need to get it bang on, because if I don't, then people immediately tell me where I've gone wrong 😉 But in terms of starting your journey, you want to start with basic stuff and gradually scale up as your confidence grows and use resources like KZfaq to help you learn how to do stuff. That's what I did (albeit there was no KZfaq when I bought my first house). I've admittedly been messing around with a drill since I was in my early teens but when I bought my first house I had very limited skills except perhaps a bit of woodwork. I found a brilliant builder who came round and helped me at the weekends, and we gradually gutted and rebuilt the old semi I was living in. I wasn't very hands on back then but remembered a lot of what he did and have been using a lot of those skills since we moved into our old cottage.

The beetle is absolutely in the wood because its damp, if I remember correctly it makes the wood easier to chew. Obviously the roof has been leaking.

Thanks for that. It's curious because the felt is in pretty good nick but there's a lot of wood and other stuff stored in the loft space, which I need to clear out and stop hoarding (carpenters and their wood!), to increase air circulation up there.

@@CharlieDIYte BS 7913 has some information on woodworm and is pretty clear about the role of moisture in timber infestation. If the north facing side of the roof has had a leak, perhaps its possible that the moisture has gotten inbetween the tiles and the bitumen underlay, and due to less sunshine hasn't been able to dry out as well as the south facing side? As you said, the Wood Lice love damp stone and wood!

@@CharlieDIYte Kyle on his RR Buildings KZfaq channel has various videos covering all those guns, he uses guns day in day out so has a lot of experience of them, worth checking out. Andy Mac on Gosforth Handyman also recently did a video on his recent issues and experiences of nail guns.
