The only character who has the honour of being placed in the D tier is Wurt. I know it kind of sucks to start a video like this on a low note, but oh well.
Wurt is in this tier for a couple of reasons. For one, Merms were supposed to be this mysterious and unknown race, cursed by the Gnaw and I guess descended from that. Wurt's addition seemed like it would elaborate on these scraps of information we had been fed over the years, but nope. Her quotes and story have nothing to do with the merms' supposedly deep and complex past. That, and she seems to be more concerned with saying ‘florp’ over and over again instead of something actually interesting. And yeah, I get it, there are a lot of lines in any Don’t Starve game, not every line has to be as grabbing as some B-list youtuber trying to make a quick buck selling cruddy poetry, but, hearing the same word over and over again frankly drives me a little bit up the wall.
If the statement ‘um, actually,’ was personified, it would be Wickerbottom. Always keen to spout out some knowledge on various things that about no one asked for, Wickerbottom’s quotes are all about feeding her superiority complex by regurgitating various facts and latin names.
The irony of course being that if Wickerbottom was truly as smart as she thought, she probably wouldn’t have ended up as a librarian who spouts Sunday trivia.
Wickerbottom’s personality is not very interesting to me for this very reason. I don’t want to know what the latin name of corn is. I don’t care what the dietary habits of a tallbird are.
I will admit, sometimes Wickerbottom does rarely does do something unique with her endless lists of latin, wherein she makes up a fictional scientific name for a resident of the Don’t Starve world. It can be fun to google what those words mean in not-archaic-speak and then see what arbitrary designation the creature has been given by our unqualified book-sorter.
Finishing off the upper end of B Tier is Wilson, a.k.a Average Joe, a.k.a Mr. Protagonist.
Despite what so many other games and pieces of media, Wilson, being the default character - surprisingly enough - actually has some interesting things to say; and doesn’t fall into the trap of lines such as [...]
Instead, Wilson is the mildly self-indulgent ‘gentleman scientist,’ possessing pride and self-confidence instead of a degree or any chemical smarts - oh, and also a decent helping of moral ambiguity to taste.
It's a touch ironic that Don’t Starve’s ‘default’ character possesses oh so much more personality than many of it’s more exotic ones. It really does sometimes feel like a luxury to have a character who doesn’t turn my brain to mush while I’m playing them.
